Confusion as Tinubu appoints 2 heads for 1 agency

There is confusion surrounding the appointment of two managing directors and chief executives for the Upper Niger River Basin Development Authority, UNRBDA.

Less than two months after President Bola Tinubu appointed Aliyu Tajudeen, a younger brother to Speaker of the House of Reps Abbas Tajudeen, as the managing director and CEO of the agency, the president appointed another head, Dangajere Jaja, who was nominated by Governor Uba Sani.

DAILY NIGERIAN gathered that the speaker reportedly “outsmarted” the governor by obtaining a presidential approval for his brother when Mr Sani’s candidate was already at the “screening stage”.

Angered by the speaker’s “fast move”, the governor also met the president and secured a presidential approval for his candidate, Dangajere Jaja.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that Mr Tajudeen’s appointment was communicated in a letter dated October 30, 2024, and signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

According to the letter, with reference number SGF.51/S.4/T/368, Mr Tajudeen’s appointment takes effect from October 29, 2024, for a four-year term.

However, in a surprising turn of events, Mr Tinubu also announced the appointment of Mr Jaja, as managing director of the same agency.

The appointment, which makes no reference to Mr Tajudeen’s occupation of the office, was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Mr Jaja’s appointment was made alongside six executive directors for the UNRBDA.

Usual pattern of appointment reversals?

DAILY NIGERIAN observed that this is not the first time Mr Tinubu’s appointments or reversals have sparked controversy.

In August 2024, the President nominated Maryam Shetty as a ministerial nominee from Kano.

However, her nomination was withdrawn in a dramatic twist while she was at the National Assembly awaiting screening.

She was subsequently replaced with Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure.

On October 20, the President also withdrew the appointment of Imam Ibrahim Kashim as chairman of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA.

Similarly, in November, Daniel Bwala was appointed as Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications.

However, within 24 hours, his role was changed to Special Adviser on Policy Communications.

On December 6, the appointment of Yazid Danfulani as the Executive Secretary of the Solid Minerals Development Fund/Presidential Artisanal Gold Mining Initiative was withdrawn.

A statement issued by the presidency said Mr Danfulani’s appointment was cancelled as “there is no vacancy in the agency,” thereby returning Fatima Shinkafi as the executive secretary.

Reacting to the frequent reversals in Mr Tinubu’s appointments, an insider source who spoke to DAILY NIGERIAN attributed the issues to a lack of due diligence and alleged hijacking of the process by certain cabals within the presidency.

When contacted for response, the spokesman for the president, Bayo Onanuga, didn’t respond to our correspondent inquiry on the matter.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU EXPRESSES DEEP ANGUISH OVER IBADAN FUNFAIR TRAGEDY AND DEMANDS THOROUGH INVESTIGATION

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound sadness over the tragic incident at the Children's FunFair in Ibadan, which resulted in the loss of innocent lives and left many injured.

The President extends his heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Oyo State, as well as to the grieving families who have lost their beloved children.

In this moment of mourning, President Tinubu stands in solidarity with the affected families and offers prayers that the Almighty God will grant peace to the souls of those who have departed in this unfortunate event.

President Tinubu has urgently directed the relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances of this tragedy thoroughly. He emphasises that it is imperative to determine whether negligence or deliberate actions contributed to this painful incident, ensuring a transparent and accountable process.

The President urges the Oyo State Government to take every necessary measure to prevent such a tragedy from reoccurring. Among the essential actions are a comprehensive review of all public events' safety measures, strict enforcement of safety regulations, and regular safety audits of event venues.

Furthermore, President Tinubu calls on event organisers to prioritise the safety of all attendees, especially children. He stresses the importance of integrating professional security, protocol, and logistics at events to ensure the utmost safety of all participants.

"Our children's safety and well-being remain paramount. No event should ever compromise their safety or take precedence over their lives," President Tinubu asserts.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU CELEBRATES SHELL AND PARTNERS' $5 BILLION DEEPWATER INVESTMENT AS MILESTONE FOR NIGERIA'S ENERGY SECTOR

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu welcomes Shell and its partners' announcement today of the Final Investment Decision (FID) on the Bonga North Deep Offshore Field. This landmark development, Nigeria's first deepwater oil project in over a decade, underscores the transformative impact of the President's policies and reforms in attracting investments in the oil and gas sector.

The Bonga North oilfield, located 130 kilometres offshore in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 118, represents an impressive estimated $5 billion investment and is expected to yield approximately 350 million barrels of crude oil. Shell holds the largest operational interest, with 55%. Its other partners are the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies, and Eni.

The FID signals renewed confidence in Nigeria's energy sector and demonstrates the effectiveness of the Tinubu administration's strategic focus on engendering a robust and competitive investment climate.

President Tinubu remarked: "The Renewed Hope Agenda fundamentally focuses on attracting investments to transform the Nigerian economy and deliver prosperity to our people. We designed our policies and reforms from the start of my administration to achieve this goal. Shell and its partners' decision to invest in Bonga North affirms the success of our efforts. We will continue to offer the necessary support to ensure their success and the realisation of Nigeria's energy potential."

President Tinubu's strategic engagement with global energy stakeholders has been instrumental in this renewed wave of investments.

In July 2023, at the first of several high-level meetings with Shell's global leadership, President Tinubu declared, "We are open for business and serious about creating a stable, predictable, and investor-friendly environment."

Presidential Directives issued in early 2024 reinforced this commitment by fast-tracking regulatory approvals, reducing operational costs, and introducing competitive fiscal incentives.

The Bonga North project is the second of the blueprint projects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu selected to drive the implementation of the transformative Presidential Directives 40, 41, and 42 issued in the first quarter of 2024.

These directives, aimed at enhancing regulatory clarity, accelerating project timelines, and incentivising investment in Nigeria's energy sector, have yielded remarkable results. Earlier this year, the Ubeta oilfield (OML 58), the first blueprint project under this initiative, achieved a Final Investment Decision (FID) through a partnership between TotalEnergies and NNPC Limited. Dormant since its discovery in 1965, the Ubeta project will produce 350 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, bolstering domestic supply and expanding Nigeria's presence in the global energy market.

With both blueprint projects now achieving FID, the success of these initiatives underscores the effectiveness of the President's strategic vision for Nigeria's energy future.

Ms Olu Arowolo Verheijen, Special Adviser to the President on Energy, commented on the Bonga North milestone: "The Bonga North FID dispels the misconceptions about International Oil Companies leaving Nigeria. Instead, we are witnessing a strategic pivot of IOCs-powered capital and technical capacity to deepwater and integrated gas projects, which align with President Tinubu's vision of transforming Nigeria into a global energy hub. The divestments from onshore operations create opportunities for local oil and gas companies to expand and thrive, building a strong foundation for Nigeria's energy future."

Ms Verheijen further noted: "The success of Bonga North and Ubeta demonstrates the efficacy of the reforms and directives championed by the President. These projects will trigger broader investments to revolutionise Nigeria's power generation, transportation, and manufacturing sectors. As we look ahead to 2025, we anticipate further FIDs from international and domestic players, marking a new era of growth and opportunity for Nigeria."

The Tinubu administration remains steadfast in positioning Nigeria as a global leader in energy innovation and investment, ensuring that these efforts translate into tangible benefits for all Nigerians.

Significant changes in the world will happen in the very near future. These changes will have profound impact on humanity. For example, petrol stations will disappear just like video stores did. Here are some predicted changes.

1. Car repair shops, lubricants, and radiators will disappear.

2. Petrol/diesel engines consisting of 20.000 pieces. While the electric car engines have 20 pieces, sold with a lifetime warranty, they are repaired at the dealer. It only takes 10 minutes to unlock and replace.

3. Broken electric vehicle engines will be repaired in a regional robot repair workshop.

4. When your electric motor breaks down, you head to a station like a car wash station, you pull your car in with your coffee and you come out with a new electric motor!

5. Gasoline pumps will be gone.

6. You will have electricity distribution meters with electric charging stations on the streets (started with the First World).

7. The biggest smart car companies have allocated money to start building plants that produce only electric cars.

8. The coal industries will disappear. And the gas/oil companies stopped. Drilling and mining of oil will stop.

9. Houses will produce and store electricity during the day for use and resell to the grid. The grid stores and distributes it to industries with high electricity consumption. Has anyone seen TESLA roof top?

10. A child today will see current cars in museums. The future is approaching faster than we imagine.

11. In 1998, Kodak had 170000 employees and sold 85% of its production was from photopaper worldwide. Within two years their business model disappeared and they went bankrupt. Who thought this was gonna happen?

12. What happened to Kodak and Polaroid will happen to several industries in the next 5-10 years.

13. Did you think in 1998 that 3 years later, pictures won't be shot on film? With smartphones who owns a camera these days?

14. Digital cameras were invented in 1975. The first camera contained 10,000 pixels, but it followed Moore's law. As with all the technologies disappointed a while and then got much better cushions.

15. This will happen again (faster) with AI, health, autonomous cars, electric, education, 3D printing, agriculture, and jobs.

16. The author of the book Shock of the Future said Welcome to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

17. Software has shut down and most traditional industries will shut down in the next 5-10 years.

18. UBER software has no car, it is the largest taxi company in the world! Who would have thought that would happen?

19. Airbnb is now the biggest hotel company in the world, even though it owns no property. Did the Hilton Hotels see that coming?

20. Artificial Intelligence: Computers have become better at understanding the world.. This year PC beats the best player in the world (10 years earlier than expected).

21. Young USA lawyers are not getting jobs because of Watson IBM, which offers you legal advice in seconds with 90% accuracy compared to 70% accuracy in humans. So if you study law, stop immediately. Lawyers will decrease 90% in the future and specialists will remain in only.

22. Watson helps doctors diagnose cancer (4 times more accurate than doctors).

23. Facebook now has a face recognition program (better than humans). In 2030 computers will be smarter than humans.

24. Self driving cars: The first self driving car appeared. And in 2 years the whole industry will change. You won't wish to own a car anymore because you will call a car with your phone and it will appear and drive you to your destination.

25. Your car won't stop, you'll pay for the distance driven, you'll produce while driving. Kids these days will never get drivers licenses and never own a car.

26. This is going to change our cities, we'll need 90-95% fewer cars. The former parking spaces will be transformed into green gardens.

27. Over 1.2 million people die each year from car accidents around the world including reckless driving or drunk driving. We now have one accident every 60k miles. With self-driving, accidents will go down to a single accident every 6 million miles. This will save a million people a year.

28. Most traditional car companies will undoubtedly go bankrupt. They're going to try the evolutionary approach and only build a better car, and the tech companies (Tesla, Apple and Google) will adopt a revolutionary approach to a computer on wheels (smart electric cars).

29. Volvo ditched the internal combustion engines in its cars and replaced them with only electric and hybrid engines.

30. Volkswagen and Audi Engineers. Absolutely terrified of (Tesla) and so should be. Look at all the companies offering electric cars. This was not known just a few years ago.

31. Insurance companies are going to have big problems because the costs will become cheaper without accidents. The car insurance business model will disappear.

32. The real estate will change. Because by working on the go, people will give up their towers and move far for more beautiful, affordable neighborhoods.

33. In 2030 electric cars will dominate. And cities will be less noisy, and their air will be much cleaner.

34. Electricity will become incredibly cheap and clean. Solar energy production has remained and will increase significantly.

35. Fossil Fuel companies are trying to restrict home solar plants access to the grid to prevent competition, but that simply can't go on - technology is coming. Green energy either from green hydrogen or from non-polluting sources for the environment and green cities, and nuclear reactions will end in most countries of the world.

36. Health: Tricorder X price will be announced this year. There are companies that are going to build a medical device (called the "Tricorder" from Star Trek) that works on your phone, that takes retina examination and your blood sample and you breathe it. It analyzes 54 biological markers that identify almost any disease. There are dozens of mobile apps currently available for various purposes.
