Court Freezes 32 Accounts Linked To Protests [FULL LIST]
A Federal High Court in Abuja has frozen 32 bank accounts allegedly linked to the recent protests across Nigeria.

The court order, granted on Thursday, directs banks to place a Post-No-Debit (PND) on the accounts and to apprehend the account holders or any persons transacting business on these accounts.

Justice Emeka Nwite’s ruling was in response to an ex-parte motion filed by the Counsel to the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Mohammed, who alleged that the accounts were used to promote terrorism financing, treasonable felonies, cyberbullying, and cyberstalking.

According to the judge, the court order aims to prevent the suspects from transferring or withdrawing funds from the accounts, which could jeopardize the investigation and possible prosecution.

He declared, “The banks are hereby directed by this honorable court to issue details of the account package(s) and to place a Post-No-Debit (PND) on the accounts, disable the ATM, while allowing inflow into the said accounts from the date of this court order.”

Meanwhile, in the application marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1219/2024, the affected accounts belong to individuals and companies, including PA.LIN.HO Global Service Ltd, Innocent Angel Lovet Chinyere Nkiru, Obidient Movement Multipurpose Cooperative Society, and Great Communicators Champion Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd.

Earlier, Detective Gregory Woji, in his affidavit in support of the ex-parte motion, disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that some of the suspects arrested were being recruited by financiers to cause mayhem and destroy lives and property. Foreign nationals were also allegedly involved in these unscrupulous acts.

Woji stated: “Preliminary investigations revealed that some of the suspects arrested were being recruited by financiers to cause mayhem and destroy lives and property.

“It is in the interest of justice to grant this request by freezing the accounts of the suspects and ordering their immediate arrest upon sighting them, pending the outcome of the investigation and possible prosecution.”

It's Unfair To Ask Nigerians Not To Protest — Activist Belema
Human Rights Activist and the Convener, Coalition of Women in Africa for Peace and Development, Belema Meshack-Hart has faulted the federal government on its position asking aggrieved Nigerians not to take to the streets to engage in protest.

Some groups across the country have been drumming for support on the social media to draw the attention of the federal government to what they tagged escalating hardship, increasing cost of living and drastic reduction in living standard, as well as insecurity.

The federal government in response to the planned protest has however urged the organisers to consider dropping the plan, saying the President Bola Tinubu-led administration is making efforts to address their demands.

Recall that the federal government had approved the release of 20 trucks of rice to each of the 36 states of the federation for distribution among needy citizens.

Additionally, the government has also approved the N70,000 minimum wage bill brought before it by the National Assembly for commencement of implementation, a policy believed to be aiming at enhancing the take-home pay of workers across the country.

Also, the federal government said it has set up centres for citizens to purchase 50kg of rice at a 50% discounted race to help families have more to feed.

Featuring on AIT current affairs programme, Democracy Today on Thursday, July 25, Belema while admitting that the cost of living has soared, causing hardship in many families said the federal government should not resort to threat but engage the leaders of the planned protest on a roundtable discussion instead of using the security agencies to threaten them.

"Those in government flaunt their wealth, they are not cutting the cost governance, but you see a family man looking for two thousand naira to feed his family and you are saying they should not protest? You can't beat a baby and tell him not to cry", he stated.

While advising that the media handlers of the federal government should come up with strategies to educate the masses on what the government is doing to alleviate the suffering of the masses, he also urged that President Bola Tinubu should engage with the agitated citizens and educate them better on what plans he has put in place on a short, middle and long-time basis to address the growing hunger.

He appealed to the government to reduce the governance cost, reduce long convoys of those in government and engage meaningfully to assuage their pains.

He also challenged the security agencies to handle peaceful protesters with utmost professionalism to ensure that it does not escalate into chaos and anarchy.

Court Reinstates Philip Shaibu As Edo Deputy Governor
•orders IGP to immediately restore his security

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday morning, reinstated Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu as the Deputy Governor of Edo State, following his earlier impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly.

The Court presided over by Hon. Justice James Omotosho held that the removal of the Plaintiff, Shaibu from office as Deputy Governor of Edo State and the subsequent appointment of Omobayo Godwins as his replacement by the Governor of Edo State was illegal, unconstitutional, null and void.

The Court held that there was a breach of the provisions of the procedure laid out in Section 188(1) to (9) in the way and manner the impeachment process was conducted. The court noted that the ouster clause in Section 188(10) limiting the jurisdiction is not a stand alone provision.

The Court referred to the decision of the Nigerian Supreme Court in Inakoju v. Adeleke(2007).

Justice Omotosho held that the impeachment was politically motivated, because of Shaibu's aspiration to contest the office of Governor of Edo State.

The Court, therefore, ordered the 1st Defendant, the Inspector General of Police to immediately restore the security of the Plaintiff, Shaibu as Deputy Governor of Edo State.

As at the time of filing this report, supporters of Shaibu were seen within the court premises, Abuja celebrating the court verdict.

Go ahead, spend funds: Oko-Jumbo Assembly charges Gov Fubara, faults Amaewhule
The Rivers State House of Assembly led by Victor Oko-Jumbo, has condemned the resolution by the Martin Amaewhule-led House, barring Governor Siminalayi Fubara from spending public funds.

The Speaker, Victor Oko-Jumbo stated this in his opening remark during plenary on Tuesday.

He said what Amaewhule and 24 others whom he described as former members of the House did, was unfounded and without validity.

Oko-Jumbo argued that the group had no legal capacity or moral basis, to bar the governor from spending public funds.

He insisted that Amaewhule and 24 others are not members of the Assembly, following their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in December, 2023.

Buttressing his argument, he said the section of the constitution which deals with the issue of defection is self-executing.

He added that the section was further made effective following the declaration of the 25 seats vacant by Edison Ehie, who was legally recognised by a court as the Speaker, before his assumption

He stated that the Assembly led by him, is the legally recognised section, which of course manages the statutory allocation of the house.

Oko-Jumbo explained that Governor Fubara had duly presented the said appropriation bill to the house when Edison Ehie was the speaker, and that same was passed and signed into law.

He said that the house is awaiting the presentation of the medium-term expenditure framework ahead of the 2025 fiscal year.

He urged the public to ignore the Amaewhule pronouncement, and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to without delay conduct the bye-election to fill the 25 vacant seats in the house.

It would be recalled that on Monday, the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly, shut down all expenditures of the Rivers State governor.

This followed a seven-day ultimatum the lawmakers gave the governor to present his budget before the House.

The Leader of the House, Major Jack had raised the motion, after informing the House about the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum given to the governor to present the 2024 budget before the House.

After deliberation, the House voted to shut down the Rivers State Consolidated Revenue Account, thus preventing Governor Fubara’s administration from spending any money on behalf of the state.

Fubara had some months back, presented the budget to a set of lawmakers loyal to him. The House of Assembly members were then led by Edison Ehie who is now the governor’s chief of staff.

Ehie and the lawmakers had then passed the budget estimates which Fubara later signed into law.

FG Repatriates 190 Nigerians From UAE

The Federal Government has repatriated a total of 190 Nigerians from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

According to a statement by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), signed by its Director General, Director, North Central Zone, Bashir Garga, on Tuesday, the returnees were received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at 5:57 am, by a combined team of government officials led by NEMA.

NEMA said the returnees have been profiled and documented by the relevant agencies, and sensitized to “behave with decorum and responsibility” on their return to Nigeria.

“The federal government urges all Nigerians, wherever they may be, to act as exemplary ambassadors of their country, upholding the fundamental values of patriotism, rule of law, decency and integrity.”

It would be recalled that in October 2022, FG repatriated a total of 542 from UAE.

Nigerians Can Obtain UAE Visas
Meanwhile, the Federal Government said it has reached an agreement with the UAE to allow Nigerian passport holders to obtain visas for travel to that Arab nation starting July 15, 2024.

The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this on Monday when he briefed State House correspondents following the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

“Following successful talks and extensive, mutually beneficial negotiations between the Government of the United Arab Emirates and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, an agreement was reached allowing for the resumption of travel to the UAE for Nigerian passport holders,” he said.

“This agreement includes updated controls and conditions to facilitate obtaining a UAE visa.

“The resumption of visas will be effective from July 15, 2024.”

The minister added that Nigerians wishing to learn more about the updated visa conditions from the UAE can visit the country’s website.

The announcement comes more than two years after the UAE suspended visa issuance to Nigerians following a period of protracted diplomatic row with Africa’s most populous nation.

It also comes about two months after UAE national carrier Emirates Airlines announced the resumption of flights to Nigeria. The airline said in May that its daily Lagos-Dubai flights would resume from October 1, 2024.
