The Cross River State Government has stepped in following the unfortunate fire incident at SPAR Mall, Calabar.

A government delegation led by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon Peter Odey, visited the scene and engaged with those affected by the incident. The government has also pledged support to victims who suffered losses.

At a time like this, our focus should be on the people who have lost their businesses, goods and means of livelihood.

This is not the time to politicise their pain.

Please, let us desist from joining issues with the government of the day over this unfortunate incident. No one planned for this tragedy to happen.

There will always be time to ask questions, review emergency response systems and demand better preparedness. Those conversations are important, but they should not overshadow the immediate need to support those who are hurting.

For now, let us stand with the victims.

Let us encourage businesses and individuals who have suffered losses. Let us also appreciate everyone working to respond to the situation.

When tragedy happens, compassion should come before politics.

May God strengthen everyone affected and provide the means for them to rebuild.

I encouraged my team at Fish Headquarters to apply for the First Lady’s sponsored African Women in Business grant that just ended.

Two of them also emerged winners in different categories.

I always encourage people working with me to have their personal brands intact, run side hustle, and champion a cause. I do not like it when you’re solely dependent on your work with me. I want their growth.

Away from that, I have a question ooo, mbok.

Now, my question is, as month wan end so, should I still pay them salaries or that one don do am for me?

Don’t forget that I encouraged them to apply oo and I even coached them overnight on how to pitch winning business ideas. Now they have won. Both of them have never done any of these before.

I remember listening to a sermon by Mark Finley some years ago titled β€œFirst Things First.” One story from that sermon has remained with me.

A woman called an insurance company in panic.She was crying on the phone. β€œPlease, I need your help. I need you to insure my properties. They are on fire!”

The response was β€œWe are sorry. We cannot insure them now. This should have been the first thing you did, before the fire.”

She cried uncontrollably, but the problem was no longer the absence of insurance. The problem was timing.

There are things you cannot successfully do when the crisis has already arrived.

That is how many of us live.

We postpone the important things while attending to urgent things.

We postpone building character until influence comes.

We postpone saving until income increases.

We postpone learning until the opportunity arrives.

We postpone succession until we are too old to lead.

We postpone our health until our body forces us to pay attention.

We postpone our relationship with God until life becomes unbearable.

When the consequences arrive, we begin to pray for what we should have prepared for.

First things first.

As leaders, entrepreneurs and changemakers, we must learn to distinguish between what is urgent and what is important.

The phone ringing may be urgent.

The meeting may be urgent.

The deadline may be urgent.

But…

Your relationship with God is important.

Your family is important.

Your health is important.

Your integrity is important.

Your preparation is important.

Your character is important.

The things we keep for the later are actually the things that should have been first.

Don't wait until your business is collapsing before you learn stewardship.

Don't wait until people stop trusting you before you learn integrity.

Don't wait until the opportunity comes before you prepare for it.

Don't wait until the fire starts before you look for insurance.

Some preparations cannot be made in the middle of a crisis.

The wisdom of life is knowing what must come first.

So, what have you been postponing that should have been first? Think about it.
