If a doctor lies, they lose their license. If a politician lies, they get re-elected. Wales wants to change that!
Wales is on track to become the first place in the world to make it a criminal offence for politicians to lie during election campaigns. The bill, already past its first stage in the Welsh Parliament, would allow prosecution of candidates who deliberately make false or misleading statements to influence voters. Those found guilty could be disqualified from office.
The push started nearly 20 years ago after the Iraq War, when Welsh politician Adam Price first tried to hold leaders accountable for deception. Polling shows 73% of voters support the idea and only 9% of people in the UK currently trust politicians to tell the truth. Doctors and lawyers already face consequences for dishonesty — politicians are the exception.
Critics warn the law could silence debate. Supporters say if politicians are afraid of a law requiring honesty, that says everything.
