NASS NDDC Committee Commends Otu, Assesses Projects in Cross River

Cross River State governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, on Monday received members of the joint National Assembly Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission at the State Executive Council Chamber, Calabar, as the lawmakers embarked on oversight of ongoing projects across the state.

The delegation, comprising members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, was in the state to evaluate the performance, transparency, and impact of development interventions executed under the NDDC framework.

Welcoming the delegation, Governor Otu expressed appreciation for their visit and commitment to accountability, describing their oversight function as pivotal to national development. “Let me begin by warmly welcoming this distinguished delegation and expressing my sincere appreciation for your presence here today,” he said. “Your efforts, oversight, and commitment do not go unnoticed.”
The governor noted that the visit would further strengthen collaboration between federal institutions and subnational governments, adding that such engagements deepen governance outcomes. “What you are doing gives us encouragement and strengthens our own resolve to do better. Committees such as yours serve as critical instruments of accountability and progress,” he stated.

Governor Otu also acknowledged the impact of federal interventions in the state, emphasizing the importance of sustaining them. “Your interventions, particularly those driven by the Federal Government, have been both timely and impactful. We must ensure they are sustained, properly implemented, and ultimately beneficial to our people,” he said.

Reflecting on governance and service, the governor underscored the need for collective responsibility. “Governance is not about working in isolation; it is about collective effort, mutual accountability, and delivering tangible outcomes that improve lives,” he remarked, urging continued synergy among stakeholders.

He further called for result-oriented engagement, stressing that policies must translate into real benefits for citizens. “Let us remain focused on results, ensuring that policies translate into real change on the ground. Our people expect no less, and we must not let them down,” Otu added.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, said the visit was part of the committee’s constitutional mandate to assess projects and ensure value for public resources.
“I bring you warm greetings on behalf of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta, in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said. “Our objective is to ensure that interventions are not only properly implemented but are also effective, sustainable, and beneficial to the people.”

Ekpenyong commended Governor Otu for what he described as visible progress in infrastructure and economic development. “Your leadership has demonstrated a clear sense of purpose in advancing economic development, rallying stakeholders, and sustaining engagement with resilience and conviction,” he noted.

He added that the committee was encouraged by ongoing developments in the state and pledged continued support. “We are confident that even greater outcomes can be achieved. We will continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to accelerate delivery, resolve constraints, and ensure that the people derive maximum benefit,” he said.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Samuel Ogbuku, highlighted progress made on key infrastructure projects across Cross River State.
According to him, “The Commission has undertaken a 27-kilometre stretch of roads across the state, with 10.7 kilometres already completed. We are happy with Your Excellency’s support and collaboration,” noting that partnership with the state government has been instrumental in project delivery.

The visit forms part of ongoing efforts by the National Assembly to strengthen oversight of development projects in the Niger Delta region, ensuring that interventions deliver measurable impact and contribute to sustainable growth.

Gov Otu Governor Bassey Otu Receives BBNaija SULTANA, Charts Creative Partnership

In what could pass for a heartwarming Easter engagement, Cross River State governor, Senator Bassey Otu Tuesday, assured of strategic collaboration with Big Brother Naija finalist, Sultana, as part of efforts to deepen the state’s footprint in Nigeria’s fast-growing creative economy.

The Governor gave the assurance while receiving the reality TV star and her team during a courtesy visit at his country home in Adiabo, Odukpani Local Government Area.

Welcoming his guest, Governor Otu expressed profound appreciation for the timing of the visit, describing it as both symbolic and sacrificial. “Your visit during this sacred Easter season is deeply appreciated. For you to make the sacrifice of time to be with us at such a period speaks volumes, and you are most welcome,” he said.

Reaffirming the state’s enduring bond with its people, the Governor declared: “In Cross River State, we stand by our own wherever we find them. It is a thing of pride for us to recognize that your roots are firmly tied to this soil. We believe strongly that the next time, you will conquer it all.” He further praised Sultana’s journey, noting that “it is no small feat to rise to the heights you have attained, especially in such a fiercely contested platform. Your resilience and courage are truly commendable.”

Governor Otu underscored the growing importance of the creative industry, aligning Sultana’s aspirations with the state’s broader development agenda. “The creative economy is the order of the day, and I am particularly delighted by your willingness to serve Cross River State in any capacity we may deem fit. I can assure you that we are going to do so,” he stated, adding with a light-hearted note, “Gentlemen, let us not admire her too much just yet, at least not until we have agreed on what the exposure is going to be.”

Projecting his administration’s vision, the Governor emphasized that Cross River is being deliberately positioned as a national leader in culture and tourism. “We are building a Cross River State that will lead Nigeria in the creative economy. We have put down a solid foundation to make our state the next destination—be it in culture, heritage, or social expression,” he said, stressing that “there will be many areas of collaboration as we work together to build a better tomorrow.”

He further assured of institutional support for Sultana’s continued rise, describing the state as a willing partner in her growth trajectory. “Now that you have attained this level, there must be time and energy to sustain and even move forward. We will be part of that engine, that catalyst, that will continue to support you to even greater heights,” the Governor affirmed.

Hinting at immediate next steps, Governor Otu disclosed plans for structured engagements to harness opportunities within the sector. “In not too long, we will reconvene for technical discussions. This visit coincided with Easter and limited some engagements, but we will bring the necessary stakeholders together to build proper synergy and direction,” he assured.

Earlier in her remarks, Sultana had expressed deep admiration for the Governor’s leadership and the strides recorded within a short period. “Your commitment to infrastructural development, the promotion of tourism, and the rebranding of Cross River has not gone unnoticed. The strides made under your leadership are both inspiring and commendable,” she said.

Declaring her readiness to contribute, the reality TV star offered to deploy her influence in support of the state’s tourism drive. “It is my earnest desire to leverage my platform to support your administration. I humbly offer myself as an ambassador for tourism in Cross River State to help amplify our beauty, culture, and unique experiences—especially through Carnival Calabar,” she stated.

She further pledged flexibility in service, adding, “I am open to contributing in any capacity deemed fit by Your Excellency, whether in promoting the Carnival or serving within the creative industry to enhance the state’s visibility on national and global stages.”
Sultana conveyed her family’s emotional connection to the state, expressing hope that “with the right collaboration, Cross River will continue to rise as a leading destination for tourism and cultural excellence,” even as she thanked the governor for the audience and reaffirmed her commitment to the state’s progress.

Otu Governor Bassey Otu charges Elders: Stand With Me to Reclaim Cross River’s Oil Status

Cross River State governor, Senator Bassey Otu at the weekend delivered what he described as a "State of the Union" address, rallying elders and critical stakeholders of Cross River State to unite behind his administration’s quest to restore justice and reclaim the state’s status among oil-producing states in the Niger Delta.

Addressing a high-powered gathering in Calabar, the governor said his administration was committed to “righting the wrongs and injustice occasioned by the malicious deletion” of the state from the oil-producing bloc, assuring that ongoing efforts would ultimately return Cross River to its rightful position.
He thanked the leaders for their steadfast support while appealing for patience as government works to “get the state out of the woods.”

The event drew an array of prominent figures including former governors Donald Duke and Pam Ogar, alongside former and serving lawmakers, ex-deputy governors and the current deputy governor, Peter Odey.

Speaking on the theme: “Justice and Welfare Through Strength and Unity,” Otu struck a reflective tone, declaring: “I stand before you today, humbled by the weight of history and the responsibilities that lie ahead,” adding that Cross River, “like the legendary Phoenix, has risen from the ashes time and again to reclaim its rightful place.”

He acknowledged prevailing concerns among some leaders, noting “whispers of withering faith and echoes of opposition for opposition’s sake,” but insisted his administration would remain resolute. Quoting wartime rhetoric, he declared: “We shall fight… we shall never surrender, not because we won’t, but because the people will not allow it.”

The governor pointed to strides made under his leadership, asserting: “We have taken bold steps in strengthening our infrastructure, repositioning agriculture, refining education, boosting tourism and deepening social welfare, while our security remains top notch.” On the lingering oil well dispute, he assured: “Our struggle continues, and I assure you, we shall prevail.”

Governor Otu, however, emphasized that the moment called not for self-congratulation but for collective resolve. “I have not come here to boast,” he said, “but to enlist your support, your prayers and your unity for strength and success,” adding in a philosophical note that he was “in alignment with Heaven and holding Heaven accountable to complete what it has started.”

Calling for unity across political divides, he urged leaders to rise above differences, invoking classical wisdom: “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” he said, stressing that unity among leaders remains “the first pillar of enduring governance.” He acknowledged the contributions of past administrations, noting: “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants like you.”

The governor warned against forces he described as seeking to “redefine our destiny by weakening our collective resolve,” cautioning that disunity could undermine the state’s aspirations. “We must rise up and seek justice through truth,” he charged, adding that “we cannot cuddle injustice disguised as diplomacy or technicality.”

On the contentious oil well dispute with Akwa Ibom State, Otu maintained that Cross River’s exclusion was based on flawed premises. “We came up to say no,” he declared, insisting that the state retains a valid littoral status tied to the Calabar estuary and should benefit from offshore resources along the Nigerian-Cameroon maritime boundary.

He further argued that modern hydrographic mapping and inter-agency reviews have affirmed Cross River’s position. “Nature does not lie. Seaward coastlines speak. Oil is not stagnant,” he said, expressing confidence that ongoing engagements would yield a favourable outcome, particularly in line with the justice-driven ethos of the current federal administration.

In a stirring conclusion, the governor urged stakeholders to close ranks in the interest of the state. “We must be strong, brave, devoted, patriotic and united enough to protect Cross Riverians. If we don’t, who will? If not now, when?” he asked, adding that history would judge leaders by their ability to rise above division and defend the collective welfare of the people.

Justice, Unity and the Will to Rise: Inside Otu’s Governor Bassey OtuDefining Address to Cross Riverians

In a stirring demonstration of inclusive leadership and statesmanlike foresight, Governor Bassey Otu, Friday delivered what he fittingly described as a "State of the Union" address, convening an august assembly of elders and critical stakeholders at the Peregrino Hall of the Governor’s Lodge Calabar. It was not merely a speech; it was a moment of reckoning, an eloquent convergence of history, purpose, and destiny, where leadership hugged legacy in a shared quest to restore the dignity of a state unjustly diminished.
Before a distinguished audience that included former governors such as Donald Duke and Pam Ogar, one time Military

Administrator of Kwara State, alongside eminent legislators and his deputy, Peter Odey, the governor spoke with a rare blend of humility and resolve. “I stand before you today, humbled by the weight of history and the responsibilities that lie ahead,” he declared, evoking the image of a leader deeply conscious of the burdens of office and the expectations of his people.

Drawing on the rich metaphor of rebirth, Otu likened the state to “the legendary Phoenix,” noting that it has “risen from the ashes, time and again to reclaim its rightful place as a beacon of hope and prosperity.” Yet, he acknowledged that Cross River now stands “at a crossroads where the choices we make today determine the trajectory of our tomorrow,” a poignant reminder that history’s verdict is shaped by present courage.

At the heart of his address was a passionate commitment to right what he described as a grave injustice, the “malicious deletion” of the state from the league of oil-producing states in the Niger Delta. With unflinching conviction, he assured his audience: “Our oil well struggle continues, and I assure you, we shall prevail,” framing the cause not merely as economic necessity but as a moral imperative anchored on truth and equity.

In a tone both defiant and inspiring, the governor confronted dissent with characteristic candour. “I have heard whispers of withering faith and echoes of opposition for opposition’s sake,” he said, before invoking the immortal resolve of wartime leadership: “We shall fight… we shall never surrender.” It was a declaration not of belligerence, but of unwavering fidelity to the people’s mandate and the enduring spirit of Cross Riverians.

Yet, beyond the rhetoric of resistance, Otu’s message was profoundly conciliatory. He extended a hand of fellowship to past leaders, affirming that his administration stands on the foundations they laid. “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants like you,” he noted, in a graceful nod to continuity, humility, and the enduring architecture of collective progress.
The governor’s appeal for unity resonated like a clarion call across the hall. “I have not come here to boast,” he declared, “but to enlist your support, your prayers and your unity for strength and success.” In those words lay the essence of his leadership philosophy, a recognition that governance is not a solitary endeavour, but a shared pilgrimage requiring patience, trust, and unwavering solidarity.

On the contentious dispute involving Akwa Ibom State, Otu articulated a compelling case rooted in law, geography, and emerging realities. He maintained that Cross River’s littoral status, anchored on the Calabar estuary, remains indisputable, and that modern hydrographic evidence has vindicated the state’s claim. “Nature does not lie. Seaward coastlines speak. Oil is not stagnant,” he proclaimed, weaving science and conviction into a powerful narrative of rightful restoration.

He further underscored the broader implications of the struggle, warning of the economic and security consequences of continued exclusion. Aligning his position with the justice-driven ethos of the current federal leadership, he expressed optimism that truth and fairness would ultimately prevail, even as he cautioned against internal divisions that could undermine the cause.

In a deeply philosophical flourish, the governor situated the struggle within universal moral principles. “We fight because Cross Riverians expect us to fight,” he asserted, invoking Cicero’s timeless dictum that “the welfare of the people is the highest law.” It was a moment that elevated the discourse beyond politics, framing the quest as a noble defence of collective destiny.

As he drew to a close, Otu’s voice rose with the cadence of history calling. “We must be strong, brave, devoted, patriotic and united enough to protect Cross Riverians. If we don’t, who will? If not now, when?” In that resonant appeal lay both a challenge and an invitation, to rise above division, to embrace unity, and to inscribe a new chapter of strength, justice, and enduring prosperity for generations yet unborn.

The prestigious ceremony, scheduled to take place at the NAF Conference Centre, is expected to draw key stakeholders in the nation’s broadcast industry.

In a statement issued on Thursday (yesterday) by the Executive Secretary, Dr Yemisi Bamgbose, BON disclosed that Governor, alongside his counterparts from Zamfara and Kaduna States, Dauda Lawal and Uba Sani, will be recognised for their dedicated support for the media industry and contributions toward the advancement of broadcasting in Nigeria. The organisation described the trio as “partners in progress whose commitment to media development continues to inspire institutional growth and professional excellence.”

According to BON, the awards ceremony, which will run from 6pm to 9pm, marks a significant milestone in the organisation’s sustained efforts to celebrate excellence and promote best practices in the broadcast sector. “After several months of painstaking process and preparations, the long-awaited 2nd edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Awards will hold on Wednesday, April 8, 2026,” the statement read, underscoring the significance of the event within the media landscape.

Highlighting the rationale for honouring the governors, BON noted that their administrations have demonstrated “remarkable goodwill and strategic support for media institutions,” adding that such recognition is intended to encourage stronger collaboration between government and the broadcast industry. The body further emphasised that “leaders who create enabling environments for media to thrive deserve to be celebrated as champions of democratic engagement and information dissemination.”

The awards, which were endorsed by BON’s 74th General Assembly in 2021, have grown into a credible platform for recognising excellence in Nigerian broadcasting. BON explained that “the primary objective of the Awards is to celebrate excellence and promote quality media practice in the broadcast industry,” a vision that continues to shape the selection of honourees and award recipients.

Providing insight into the selection process, the organisation revealed that the 2026 edition attracted 204 entries spanning broadcast performances from 2024. The Awards Selection Committee, led by former Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Danladi Bako, alongside representatives from key regulatory bodies and veteran broadcasters, undertook a rigorous evaluation to ensure credibility and fairness. BON described the process as “thorough, transparent and reflective of the highest industry standards.”

Beyond the recognition of Governors Otu, Lawal, and Sani, the event will also celebrate excellence across 24 competitive categories, including radio and television stations of the year, best reporter, best newscaster, and best producer. BON added that “the awards will not only spotlight outstanding practitioners but also honour individuals whose lifetime contributions have shaped the trajectory of broadcasting in Nigeria.”

Reaffirming its commitment to industry growth, BON stated that the ceremony will serve as both a celebration and a call to higher standards. “As we honour excellence and recognise supportive leadership, we also reaffirm our resolve to foster innovation, professionalism, and integrity within the broadcast sector,” the statement read.

Convention Momentum Points to Tinubu’s Re-election —Governor Bassey Otu

Cross River State governor, Bassey Otu, has said the overwhelming turnout at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Convention in Abuja at the weekend indicated an undeniable momentum for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the development as a clear signal of growing nationwide endorsement.

Otu, who spoke with journalists at the convention venue, said the sheer scale of participation and enthusiasm among party faithful points to a consolidating political base for the President ahead of the next electoral cycle.

According to him, the energy in Abuja reflects not just party strength, but a broader national alignment with Tinubu’s leadership. “It speaks about unity, it speaks about stability, it speaks a lot about policy, it speaks about direction. We are focused, forward-going, and backward never,” the governor declared, emphasizing that the convention has set the tone for what lies ahead politically.

He added that the event marked a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that the turnout itself has become a referendum of sorts on the administration’s performance so far. “Seeing is believing. What you have seen in this arena today has never happened in Nigeria. This is to show that a Jagaban is a Jagaban. The President is going to be re-elected. The result is here, nothing different,” Otu stated confidently.

The governor argued that the administration’s achievements within a relatively short period have fueled the groundswell of support now evident across party structures. “If within two and a half years somebody could achieve this milestone, let us call a spade a spade, what is good is good. Jagaban is the way,” he added.

Otu also highlighted the strategic importance of the convention in galvanizing party structures nationwide, noting that beyond electing leaders, it served as a platform for reaffirming loyalty and building momentum toward future elections. He stressed that the APC is entering the next phase of its political journey more united and purpose-driven.

He pointed to the strong and diverse presence of stakeholders from Cross River State as a testament to the state’s commitment to the President’s re-election bid. “We are here in about three generations of leadership in the state, with everybody that is somebody in Cross River, to show our total support and solidarity for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

Also speaking, former Cross River State Governor, Senator Ben Ayade, said the convention’s success reinforces the internal strength of the APC and provides a stable platform for the party’s future electoral victories.

“This particular convention is very special because we have a strong and formidable leadership at the national level. You can see that there’s a proper distillation of the process in such a way that we are almost arriving at consensus in about 90 percent of cases,” Ayade noted.

He explained that the consensus-driven approach adopted at the convention strengthens party cohesion and positions it for sustained dominance. “Consensus is the higher level of democracy. When brothers sit together and agree, it shows unity and family culture. That is what we are seeing here, and it is what will drive the party forward,” he said.

Ayade further underscored the unique political harmony in Cross River, describing the relationship between himself and Governor Otu as a model of continuity and mutual support. “We do not have disagreement because as a family, we settle issues internally and move on. I watch his back, he watches my back. That unity is part of what we are bringing to support the President’s re-election,” he added.
Both leaders agreed that the convention has not only strengthened the APC internally but has also sent a strong message to the opposition that the ruling party remains cohesive, strategic, and firmly on course toward securing another mandate for President Tinubu.
