🚨 Gov Otu Welcomes FG’s Strategic Roadmap for Bakassi Deep Seaport
Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has expressed profound excitement over the Federal Government’s unveiling of a strategic framework that prioritizes the completion of the Bakassi Deep Seaport.
The new roadmap, contained in the National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy, lists Bakassi among nine deep seaports marked for accelerated development.
Speaking at the policy presentation in Lagos, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, described the initiative as a transformative step to position Nigeria as West and Central Africa’s leading maritime hub.
Governor Otu described the Bakassi Deep Seaport as the crown jewel of his administration’s economic blueprint, calling it a national asset capable of unlocking regional prosperity and redefining Nigeria’s maritime relevance.
He decried the current state of shipping in Nigeria, where only 21% of cargoes come through the country’s ports, while 79% are diverted to Benin, Togo, and Ghana due to shallow port capacity. He said the Bakassi Deep Seaport would end this trend and solve Nigeria’s shipping challenges.
Other ports listed for development include Badagry, Olokola, Ondo, Bonny, Burutu, Benin, Ibom, and Agge.
