One thing every young filmmaker needs to understand is this: handheld cinematography is not shaky camera work.
It is controlled movement designed to make the audience feel present inside the scene.
Cinematographers use handheld shots to create realism, tension, intimacy, urgency, and emotional connection.
But the secret to good handheld footage is body control.
To steady your shots naturally:
• Bend your knees slightly
• Keep your elbows tucked in
• Walk heel-to-toe slowly
• Control your breathing
• Use wider lenses like 24mm or 35mm
• Let your body absorb movement
A gimbal is important too, but it serves a different purpose.
Use handheld for emotion and realism.
Use a gimbal for smooth, controlled movement.
