Northeast Zonal Eliminations for National Intermediate Games Begin in Damaturu

The sixth edition of the Northeastern Zonal Elimination for team sports in the National Intermediate Games 2026 officially commenced on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at the August 27 Stadium in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

The three-day zonal championship, scheduled to run from September 10 to 12, 2026, will feature competitions in nine sporting events.

Organised under the National Sports Commission’s grassroots sports development programme, the games bring together young athletes from the six Northeastern states of Adamawa, Borno, Bauchi, Taraba, Gombe, and host state Yobe.

Events lined up for the tournament include football, hockey, handball, rugby, indoor volleyball, cricket, basketball, beach volleyball, and Abula.

Speaking to journalists at the opening, the Zonal Coordinator of the National Sports Commission for the Northeast, Musa Garba, said the competition is open to athletes aged between 16 and 19 years.

According to him, the initiative is designed to discover and nurture young talents across the zone for representation at the national level.

“The first and second-placed teams in each event will qualify to represent the Northeast zone at the National Intermediate Games in Lagos, scheduled for 2027,” Garba stated.

He urged all participating states to strictly adhere to the rules of the games to ensure a hitch-free and successful tournament.

The National Intermediate Games are part of the Commission’s broader effort to strengthen grassroots sports development and provide a platform for young athletes to progress to elite competition.

PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE PETITIONS DSS OVER ALLEGED ANTI-NORTH COMMENT

President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio, has petitioned the Department of State Services over a fake anti-North statement circulating online.

In the petition signed by his Chief of Staff, which was made available to the media by his Special Assistant, Mr Jackson Udom, Akpabio asked the DSS to urgently investigate and fish out persons that created and spread a graphic on social media platforms.

The graphic wrongly attributes to him a statement claiming that Northerners will be hardest hit if President Tinubu loses an election.

Akpabio’s office says the statement is completely fabricated, noting that there is no video, audio, speech, or credible report to back it up, and accuse those behind it of trying to deceive the public and provoke regional tension.

The Senate President is urging security agencies to trace the origin of the graphic and those behind its distribution.

CUSTOMS GENRATES N4.3TN IN SIX MONTHS

The Nigeria Customs Service has generated N4.30 trillion in revenue between January and June 2026, representing 36.4 percent of its N11.074 trillion annual target.

This was discloses at the Nigeria Customs Service Board's 65th Regular Meeting, chaired by the Minister of Finance, Professor Taiwo Oyedele.

The Board says improved revenue collection was supported by the B’Odogwu digital system, expanded audits, geospatial technology, joint border patrols and engagement with the trading community.

The Board further approves the upgrade of the Customs Medical Corps to a sub-department and the De-Minimis Regulation 2025, while reviewing the ongoing recruitment exercise.

The Service says the measures are aimed at strengthening efficiency, accountability and revenue mobilisation.

The Yobe State Government has trained 400 media actors on digital communication and community engagement, with Governor Mai Mala Buni CON approving a second batch of 400 participants to further strengthen media literacy and professional communication across the state.

The Governor’s approval was conveyed by the Secretary to the Yobe State Government, Dr. Mohammed Goje, who represented him at the Yobe Media Summit held in Damaturu under the theme, “Harnessing Digital Tools for Community Impact and Engagement.”

Dr. Goje said the training was designed to equip media actors and other communication practitioners with the skills required to effectively use digital platforms to inform citizens, promote government programmes, counter misinformation and enhance public engagement.

He urged participants to go beyond routine reporting of government activities and communicate the real impact of policies and projects on communities.

The governor also emphasized the need for accuracy, professionalism and responsible digital engagement, urging media actors to “communicate with facts and disagree without insult.”

He encouraged participants to develop expertise in key sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, housing, commerce, security and youth empowerment, to enable them provide informed and credible communication on government policies and interventions.

He further called for stronger connection between digital communication and grassroots engagement, stressing that effective public communication must also involve listening to citizens and understanding the realities of people in wards, villages and communities.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Hon. Abdullahi Bego, commended Governor Buni for promoting media literacy and professional development in the state.

Bego explained that the Yobe Media Summit was an offshoot of the Arewa Media Summit held in Kano, following a recommendation by Dr. Goje, which Governor Buni approved.

He announced that the Governor had approved the training of another 400 media actors, particularly those who were unable to participate in the current programme.

The summit featured presentations by Dr. Musa Usman of the Faculty of Communication, University of Maiduguri; Dr. Lawan Cheri, Deputy Rector, Administration, Federal Polytechnic Damaturu; and Prof. Sheriff Almuhajir of Yobe State University.

The event was attended by the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Muhammad Lawan Gana; the Governor’s Domestic Personal Assistant, Mal. Hassan Shettima; General Managers of NTA, YTV, YBC, Sunshine FM and Wetland FM; representatives of the NUJ Yobe State Council; and other leaders of media-related organisations.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the Director-General of COYAPO, Bature Goniri, CNA, urged participants to be patient, mindful of their utterances on social media and respect dignity of one another.

He commended the efforts of the Governor Mai Mala Buni for focusing attention in building capacity of the young people especially on the positive usage of media platforms.

The participants were drawn from both mainstream media and media actors from across the 17 Local Government Aread of the state.

JAMB releases underage UTME results, sets 320 cut-off for exceptional candidates.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination results of all underage candidates for viewing, but says the release does not automatically qualify them for admission.

In a statement, JAMB’s Acting Director, Public Affairs and Protocols, Fabian Benjamin, says an underage candidate is any applicant who will be below 16 years of age as of September 30, 2026.
The Board says the results were released to enable candidates, parents and guardians to know their performance, stressing that the scores cannot be used for admission except by candidates who meet the conditions for exceptional admission.

JAMB adds that such candidates must demonstrate exceptional academic ability and maturity and pass several stages of assessment and verification.

The requirements include a minimum UTME score of 320 and at least 80 per cent in relevant Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination subjects, where applicable.

YOBE COMMAND ARREST MONIEPOINT FIELD LOAN OFFICER OVER ALLEGED ₦74 MILLION FRAUD

The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a suspect over an alleged fraud and misappropriation involving seven POS operators in Damaturu.

In the early hours of today 4th September 2026, about seven POS operators of Moniepoint separately reported at the ‘A’ Divisional Headquarters Damaturu, that one Thlakham Daniel ‘F’ 32 yrs, a Field Loan Officer (FLO) of Moniepoint, visited their respective business premises on different occasions where she allegedly profiled their accounts under the pretext of facilitating loan for them. They further alleged that she fraudulently obtained loans through their accounts without their consent.

Upon receipt of the report, detectives of the Division immediately commenced investigation, traced and arrested the suspect along with one vehicle suspected to have been obtained from the proceeds of the crime.
During the course of investigation, the suspect allegedly confessed to the offence with the total amount involved summed at about Seventy-Four Million Naira (₦74,000,000). Preliminary investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged fraudulent transactions and determine the extent of involvement of any other persons.

The Commissioner of Police, Yobe State Command CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin psc, mspsp, sm.icm, assures members of the public that the Command will continue to pursue all cases of fraud and financial crimes with professionalism and diligence.

He further urges members of the public to exercise caution in matters involving their bank and digital financial accounts and to promptly report any suspicious transactions to the Police.
