Reginald F. Lewis made history in 1987 by becoming the first Black person to build a billion-dollar company. His firm, TLC Group, acquired Beatrice International Foods for $985 million—one of the largest leveraged buyouts ever by an African American.
This groundbreaking deal turned TLC Beatrice into the largest Black-owned business in the U.S. at the time, spanning 31 countries and generating over $1.8 billion in annual revenue. Lewis’s success shattered barriers and redefined what was possible for Black entrepreneurs in global finance.
