The Storm Is Over, Strength Renewed: A Tribute to Honourable Dr. Betta Edu at 39

The storm is a reminder that our foundations must be strong enough to withstand tough times. Honourable Dr. Betta Edu stands as a reflection of such a solid foundation, as prepondered in the Holy Book.

Today marks another milestone of resilience, consistency, and commitment for a shining light in the Renewed Hope mandate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Dr. Betta Edu exemplifies the spirit of impact, courage, and excellence. She is living proof that Nigerian women can rise above limitations and redefine leadership.

Despite all the challenges , she has continued to shine with grace, embodying the true Nigerian spirit -one of perseverance, optimism, and faith.

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide celebrates you today as a symbol of hope and inspiration. We pray that your exemplary character and leadership virtues be replicated in the lives of many young Nigerian women, and that heaven shall break protocol to grant you greater favour.

We identify with your passion and dedication as you continue to spread the fragrance of the Renewed Hope Agenda and advance the course of national development.

Happy Birthday to a rare gem, a gift from heaven, and a beacon of democratic progress in Nigeria and Africa at large.

Signed:
Bedford Berefa Benjamin

Alleged Coup: In October 1983, Major Daniel Idowu Bamidele heard of coup rumours against President Shehu Shagari and promptly reported to his General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (who, unknown to Bamidele at that time, was in the thick of the plot).

A week later, Bamidele found himself on a plane to Lagos, detained by the Directorate of Military Intelligence at Tego Barracks and was accused of plotting a coup against Shagari.

Fake witnesses were paraded and a mock interrogation contrived, while reports were being made to the Nigerian Security Organisation (then under Umaru Shinkafi) to mislead the Shagari regime.

Meanwhile, the real plot continued underground with the full involvement of the same Military Intelligence group that was interrogating him.

Finally, on November 25, 1983, with no credible witness to nail him, and no legal basis to charge him for a one-man conspiracy, Bamidele was released. He returned to Jos, befuddled about what had actually transpired, until on January 1, 1984, his own GOC, Buhari, to whom he had reported the plot, emerged as the new Head of State!

Learning from his ordeal in 1983, Bamidele had kept quiet about any coups.

However, in 1985, the Major was arrested (for failing to report the alleged Vatsa coup conspiracy), tried by a special military tribunal, and executed by firing squad on March 5, 1986, along with others such as Major-General Mamman Vatsa.

Bamidele's words to the tribunal were:

"I heard of the 1983 coup planning, told my GOC General Buhari who detained me for two weeks in Lagos. Instead of a pat on the back, I received a stab. How then do you expect me to report this one?

"This is not self-adulation but a sincere summary of the qualities inherent in me. It is an irony of fate that the president of the tribunal who, in 1964, felt that I was good enough to take training in the UK is now saddled with the duty of showing me the exit from the force and the world."

InTHE stubborn Tale of SOWORE.
A consistently ARRESTED!!!

1992, Babangida expelled Sowore from the University of Lagos (UNILAG). A year later, in 1993, Abacha arrested him. The situation escalated in 1998 when the Abdulsalami government detained Sowore during the National University Games Association (NUGA) events in Lagos.

Fast forward to 2006, Obasanjo and El-Rufai took legal action against Sowore for interviewing Gbenga Obasanjo and revealing the controversial third term agenda.

By 2007, the late Umaru Yar'Adua imposed a ban on Sahara Reporters in Nigeria. In 2014, a close associate of Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, tried to file a lawsuit in the U.S. aiming to bankrupt Sahara Reporters. However, this attempt stalled after he received a threatening letter, coinciding with Jonathan's electoral defeat in 2015.

In 2017, then Senate President Bukola Saraki targeted Sowore, securing a dubious ruling from the Kwara State High Court that resulted in the freezing of Sahara Reporters' accounts for an entire year.

The tide turned in 2019 when Buhari arrested Sowore and charged him with treason. By 2023, Tinubu placed him on an immigration watchlist, intensifying the scrutiny.

In 2025, Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, arrested Sowore for alleged cybercrime, seizing his international passport in the process. Regardless of personal opinions about him, Sowore stands as a formidable figure in Nigeria. Few, apart from Fela Kuti, have faced such relentless persecution from the government for advocating what they believe is. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Goodluck Jonathan Brain Jotter Sahara Reporters

SERIAKE DICKSON HAS MADE HIS STANDS CLEAR DISCRIBIBG THE RECENT MOVE BY DOUYE DIRI AS NEEDLESS

To be fair to the Governor, he consulted me, and we have discussed several times, and on each occasion, I told him my position, based on my principles and values, which he knows. And these are the same values that I had in mind when I supported him above other equally worthy contestants, because of our collective involvement in the Ijaw movement and the Niger Delta struggle. His area, the smallest local government, had not produced a governor before, and he has been a part of my team since 2012.

It is unfortunate that he has taken this step, which he is at liberty to take. As I said, these days, you don't know what is pursuing most of these governors and leaders defecting to the APC, or what they are pursuing. I wish him the best of luck.

YOU CAN JAIL A MAN YOU CANNOT JAIL HIS BISION- OBA OF BENIN
WHAT! MUST READ MY PEOPLE “Show me a man in Africa who has sacrificed his own mother and father for the freedom of his people like Nnamdi Kanu, and I will immediately step down as the Oba of Benin!” — Oba Ewuare II declares

The revered monarch, Oba Ewuare II of the Benin Kingdom, has publicly expressed his deep admiration for the detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, calling him “a man history will never forget.”

“I am witnessing history in the making. A man like Nnamdi Kanu still walks this earth — a man who placed the freedom of his people above his own bloodline. Such men are rare,” the Oba said.

For years, critics and political voices have thrown countless accusations against the Biafran agitator.
They said “Igbos love money” — yet Nnamdi Kanu proved them wrong.

They claimed “the South-East and South-South can never unite” — yet Nnamdi Kanu built a bridge that no politician could.

They mocked him, saying “he will abandon Biafra when he cashes out” — yet he remains in detention despite an alleged ₦500 billion offer to drop his struggle.

They said “Igbos don’t love themselves” — yet Nnamdi Kanu’s sacrifice has become the symbol of Igbo unity and resilience.

“You can jail a man, but not his vision,” the Oba added. “Kanu’s name will echo in the hearts of generations unborn.”
