APC in Fresh Controversy as Conflicting Primary Results Deepen Crisis in Abia South
The aftermath of the APC Senatorial Primaries in Abia State, especially in Abia South Senatorial District continues to generate intense debate, raising critical questions about transparency, consistency, and internal party management. What should have been the beginning of post-primary reconciliation has instead evolved into a fresh controversy over conflicting vote figures and competing claims to the party's senatorial ticket.
On May 18, during the official collation of results, the designated Collation Officer, Professor Emmanuel Kalu Agbaeze, announced that Hon. Uchenna Erondu Jr. secured 16,640 votes to emerge winner of the primary election. According to the figures announced at the collation centre, Dr. Nyerere Anyim polled 5,206 votes, coming a distance second, Hon. Blessing Nwagba received 4,456 votes, while Hon. Paul Ikonne scored 4,099 votes. Based on those results, Hon. Erondu was declared the winner, having obtained the highest number of votes.
However, the controversy took a new dimension following reports and statements aimed at countering claims that Hon. Paul Ikonne had emerged as the party's candidate. In the process, another set of figures reportedly surfaced from party sources, showing significantly different results. In the revised figures, Hon. Erondu was credited with 15,982 votes, Hon. Blessing Nwagba with 4,556 votes, Hon. Paul Ikonne with 4,322 votes, while Dr. Nyerere Anyim's votes reportedly dropped to 4,022. The discrepancies between the two sets of results have inevitably fueled suspicion and speculation among party members and supporters.
From an objective standpoint, the major issue is not who benefits from the revised figures but the credibility of the process itself. Electoral integrity depends heavily on consistency and transparency. Once multiple result sheets with varying figures enter the public domain, confidence in the process is weakened, regardless of who eventually emerges victorious. The contradictions have created an avoidable perception problem for the APC at a time when the party should be focused on strengthening its position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The concerns being raised by supporters and stakeholders deserve careful attention. Questions surrounding the source of the revised figures, the authority under which they were issued, and whether they accurately reflect what transpired at the field level should be addressed openly. Silence, conflicting narratives, or selective explanations may only deepen distrust among party members.
For the APC leadership in Abia State, this is a defining moment. The party must demonstrate fairness, transparency, and respect for due process. Every aspirant deserves equal treatment, while party members deserve clear and verifiable information. If not properly managed, the controversy risks creating divisions that could linger long after the primaries and ultimately affect the party's electoral prospects.
The strength of any political party lies not merely in producing candidates but in ensuring that members believe in the legitimacy of the process that produced them. The APC leadership must therefore rise above allegations, speculation, and factional interests by providing clarity and restoring confidence in the outcome of the Abia South Senatorial Primaries.
