Justice Tsoho Says "No Way!" to Nnamdi Kanu’s Request for a New Judge

Chief Judge Justice John Tsoho has turned down Nnamdi Kanu's request to have his terrorism trial reassigned to a different judge.

Kanu expressed doubts about the impartiality of Justice Binta Nyako, who has been on the case since its inception in 2015, but Tsoho decided she was the best fit to finally wrap things up.

He made it clear that if Kanu wants to pursue this recusal again, he needs to submit a formal motion and show up for a hearing. It’s a high-stakes game, and as the legal saga drags on, one has to wonder—how much longer can this trial keep going without real resolution?

UPDATED: Court Adjourns For Trial, Nnamdi Kanu May Seek Out-Of-Court Settlement

The IPOB leader has been in DSS custody since June 2021 when he was arrested in Kenya.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the ongoing trial against the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to September 23, 25, and 26, 2024 following the inability of the trial to commence properly.

Justice Binta Nyako made the adjournment after the defense counsels prayed the court to explore section 17 of the Federal High Court Act on following the the denial of his application to quash the remaining 7 count charge against Kanu.

Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act states that” In any proceedings in the Court, the Court may promote reconciliation among the parties thereto and encourage and facilitate the amicable settlement thereof.”

This was the submission of Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor, before Justice Binta Nyako following the dismissal of a fresh application by Kanu challenging the jurisdiction of the court to entertain counts 1,2,3,4,5,8 and 15 for being unconstitutional.

The court held that it cannot overrule itself on issues it had already resolved, adding that the only option left for the applicant was to proceed on appeal.

At the proceeding, Ejimakor noted that trial cannot go on if his client rights to fair hearing is being questioned.

Ejimakor also brought to the attention of the court that the Department of State Services (DSS) was yet to fully comply with the orders of the court as their visit to Kanu was still being bugged.

Nnamdi Kanu did not escape from DSS custody – Lawyer, Ejimakor debunks reports

Aloy Ejimakor, the lead Counsel of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Friday denied reports that the agitator escaped from his holding facility at the Department of State Services, DSS, in Abuja.

Ejimakor was reacting to claims that Kanu had escaped from custody.

Speaking with DAILY POST, Ejimakor said: “It’s not true. I will be visiting him today by 2:00 pm. Kanu is a responsible and courageous freedom fighter and he is determined to stay put to fight the injustice within the system, not outside of it. He is too big to contemplate the option of escaping.”

NIGERIAN NEWS🇳🇬

BUSINESSMinimum wage: NLC, TUC to suspend strike after grounding economy

24 hours after workers crippled Nigeria’s economy, leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress have reached a deal with the Federal Government to suspend the ongoing indefinite strike.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume disclosed this on Monday night while unveiling the resolutions of the emergency meeting with organized labour.

The resolution stated that the tripartite Committee is to meet every day for the next week to arrive at an agreeable National Minimum Wage

Importantly, they added that organized labour will meet immediately to consider the federal government’s commitment.

“Labour in deference to the high esteem of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s commitment in iv above undertakes to convene a meeting of its organs immediately to consider this commitment; and No worker would be victimized as a result of the industrial action,” part of the resolution read.

A senior executive of organized labour who preferred anonymity told DAILY POST that workers would suspend the indefinite strike and return to negotiation with the government.

“For certain, organized labour will suspend its indefinite strike on Tuesday to continue negotiations with the tripartite committee.

“This is in line with the commitment extracted from the government after the meeting with the SGF”, he said.

Meanwhile, an earlier meeting between the organized labour and leadership of the National Assembly ended in a deadlock.

Consequently, workers commenced an indefinite strike on Monday, 3 June over the failure of the government to implement minimum wage and reversal of the electricity tariff hike.
