Who is an Artist Manager?
An artist manager (also known as a talent manager) is an individual who guides the professional career of an artist.
The duty of an Artist Manager is not just to answer calls and reply to emails for shows & booking, rather the responsibility of a manager is to oversee the day-to-day business affairs of an artist; advise and counsel the artist concerning professional matters, long-term plans, and personal decisions which may affect their career.
A music manager may be hired by a musician, or the manager may discover an artist with talent and decide to groom, rebrand and help the artist grow.
When you should hire one!
When you've gained clarity about where your music career is heading to. when you're sure it's either music or nothing.
Managers don't have time for unready artists.
A lot of artists don't even have a great song and yet they want a manager who will be putting them in shows.
Management is different from a Record Label, most growing labels always decide to manage their artists just to cut costs, but top labels allow the artist to hire management of his/her choice.
In normal practice, the manager doesn’t receive a regular salary. Instead, they earn a commission when the client (artist) gets booked for a show, signs an endorsement, or earns royalties. The exact commission fee varies widely depending on the manager’s input in the artist career which is within 10% to 25%. In cases where the manager invested financially in the artist at the beginning, the commission can reach as high as 30% - 40%. If an emerging artist hires a well-known manager, the manager earns a basic salary and little percentage (usually below 10%) of the artist’s earning.
There is more to talk about in management, with time I will keep unfolding it here
