Before retirement, I was often concerned about whether I could afford something today. I did not always ask whether I would still be able to afford it ten or twenty years from now.

That small difference in thinking can change everything.

If you are still working, especially if retirement is getting closer, start asking yourself this question before making major financial decisions:

“Will this decision help or hurt the older version of me?”

That question can make you think twice before taking unnecessary debt, spending your entire pay rise, making a risky investment or using money that should be reserved for retirement.

You do not have to stop enjoying your life today. But your future self deserves consideration too.

Every financial decision you make today is also a decision about the life you will live tomorrow.

Do Not Give Away Your Retirement Money Under Pressure

When you retire, people may suddenly remember all the sacrifices you made for them.

A relative may have a business idea. A friend may need a loan. Someone may tell you about an investment opportunity that cannot fail. Another person may simply ask for help because they believe you have received a large retirement payment.

I understand the desire to help. I have felt it myself.

But retirement money is different from ordinary income. Once you stop working, replacing a large amount of money may not be easy.

Before giving away a significant part of your retirement savings, stop and think. Ask yourself whether you can afford to lose the money without putting your own future at risk.

You can love people and still protect your financial security. Saying “I cannot afford this” does not make you selfish. Sometimes, it is simply responsible.

I Wish I Had Prepared for the Quietness of Retirement

When I was working, I sometimes dreamed about the day I would finally have enough time to rest. I imagined waking up without an alarm, enjoying my mornings and having fewer responsibilities.

What I did not think enough about was the quietness that can come after retirement.

You can spend thirty or forty years surrounded by colleagues, meetings, phone calls and daily responsibilities. Then suddenly, the workplace is no longer part of your life.

That change can be difficult.

If you are approaching retirement, prepare for your social life as much as you prepare financially. Maintain friendships, develop interests outside your job and find meaningful things you can do with your time.

Your career may end, but your life does not end with your career.

Retirement should give you the freedom to live differently, not leave you wondering what to do with your life.
