EXCERPTS OF GOVERNOR CHUKWUMA CHARLES SOLUDO'S EXTEMPORE SPEECH ON ANAMBRA STATE’S 33RD ANNIVERSARY, AUGUST 27, 2024

Welcome to this very important occasion

Today, Anambra celebrates its 33rd anniversary since creation.

On the 27th of August, 1991, the current Anambra state was created out of the old Anambra and today, as we celebrate the 33rd anniversary of its existence, I want to use this opportunity to felicitate with ndị Anambra all over the world, those at home and in the diaspora.

Anambra state was created out of an aspiration that resembles the vision and the mission of the current administration to create a liveable and prosperous homeland. Thirty-three years on, it is safe to say that Anambra is truly on the rise.

Anambra today ranks among the top six largest economy, among the thirty-six states. Anambra state, obviously in terms of poverty indicators , ranks as one of the lowest in Nigeria.

About 65-70 per cent of Anambra state is largely urbanized with four major cities subsisting, and one of them housing the largest industrial and commercial hub and, as they say, the largest market in West Africa.

And so, Anambra today, be it in the social sector, economically, sports-wise, etc, has been rising as a major lead. If you take in the social sector; in education, Anambra is certainly rated as one of the best.

Our students are representing Nigeria all over the world, winning all the laurels and certainly always in the first three secondary school performances.

Today, due to our free education programme in public schools in Anambra, the state currently ranks as number one in terms of having the lowest out of school children.

If you take in terms of technology and innovation, infrastructure revolution, and rural transformation, we are number one. In the area of health, we are second only to Lagos in terms of having the smallest infant mortality rate in the country, and so on and so forth.

The simple message today is that Anambra; the dreams of our forebears, founding fathers and heroes past of creating a land of opportunity and prosperity- a liveable homeland; I want to say that everything put together, that Anambra is largely on the rise.

The state of our State is very strong indeed and all ndị Anambra wherever you may be, despite whatever may be the challenges, everybody has cause to be proud of our homeland- Anambra state.

I want to use this opportunity to REMEMBER several of our heroes past who actually gave Anambra brand names, including the late Rt. Hon. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe of blessed memory, the founding father of Nigeria (the Zik of Africa), Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (Ikemba Nnewi), the late Dr. Alex Ekwueme, late Chinụa Achebe, Kenneth D**e, Jerome Udoji, Chuba Okadigbo- the list is quite long. And other Eminent ndị Anambra who have contributed, not only to the growth and foundation of our dear state, Igbo land, South East, and Nigeria, generally.

You also have countless other thousands of ndị Anambra in Anambra and all over the world, who are champions. They deserve to be celebrated - those who are still alive and those who started the journey thirty-three years ago but have died. We remember you all today.

We use this opportunity as well to celebrate our today and our future, celebrate our children and youths who happen to be our bridge to the future, for the wonderful work that they are doing in schools, excelling in Anambra and all over the world.

We celebrate our youths. Recently, much of Nigeria was enveloped in protest, and so on, but our youths did what we are known for - go to work, find a solution, do something. Our youths decided to do something about the challenges rather than occupy the streets to complain

We celebrate our women who bear quite a large chunk of the burden of building the family- raising the families and building our society. Anambra is one state in Nigeria, where, in fact, the women dominate the public sector and various aspects of our lives, and we celebrate our women today.

Our primary school teaching enrollment is about ninety seven per cent dominated by women, our secondary school teachers, eighty nine per cent of the teachers are also women. Our civil service is dominated by over sixty per cent women. So, they constitute the foundation of our society.

Our men also work extremely very hard, our entrepreneurs, we use this opportunity to celebrate all of you.

To the residents of Anambra- non indigenes of Anambra state who are flooding into Anambra as a land of opportunity, as well as those who are contributing positively to the economy and social development of Anambra, we use this opportunity to celebrate you.

And to all our friends and all our partners all over the world- the federal government, our neighbouring states, other states of Nigeria, the international community, the private sector, the investors who are flooding into Anambra as a land of opportunity, helping to create the prosperity that we desire. This is a moment that we celebrate all of you.

Anambra is on the rise. The challenges abound, but our resolve is to continue to work extremely very hard every day to ensure that we continue to take Anambra higher and higher and higher. We are fully on course

We do not have big parties for celebrations, but we are still working very hard - dealing with the issues of security and our environment. We've been receiving all manner of warnings for Anambra to deal with the expected massive flooding. Anambra is preparing as one of the states that will be most badly hit.

The last time it happened, about two years ago, 8 local government areas were totally swamped with flooding, damaging goods and wealth and assets, worth into hundreds of billions of naira, displacing hundreds of thousands of persons. This is going to cost the state a humongous amount of money.

The federal government, for example, sent some 24,000 bags of rice, which we are keeping for this particular major emergency that is expected to happen any moment from now.

This is not a day to drink and dance, even though we have millions of things to celebrate, but we are off to work as usual.

I say to ndị Anambra, we are ndị Anambra. We constitute some of the best entrepreneurs we have in the world and we beckon on you to use our enterprise which we use to excel all over the world, but more importantly, we must deploy our God-given enterprise, resourcefulness, intellect and capacities to transform Anambra state.

Together, let's build that liveable and prosperous homeland. Of course, we can. We have all that it takes to make it happen. We are hopeful and praying for many more years of Anambra moving from glory to glory, height to height in the attainment of our vision to create that liveable and prosperous smart megacity.

God bless you all

HOW SOLUDO MADE THE DIFFERENCE: A BLAST FROM THE PAST IN NIGERIAN BANKING

By Christian ABURIME

In an event that vividly depicted a metaphoric blast from the past, radiating both nostalgia and profound appreciation, dignitaries, business leaders, and politicians gathered to celebrate the launch of "The Power of One Man: How Soludo-Engineered Consolidation Transformed Nigerian Banks into Global Players", authored by Dr. Ray Echebiri, last Saturday in Lagos.

The book commemorates the pivotal banking reforms initiated by the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, two decades ago as a CBN governor; reforms that not only fortified Nigeria's financial system but also elevated it to global standards.

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, represented by former Cross River Governor Donald Duke, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwoolu, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and other esteemed personalities attended the launch, each paying glowing tributes to Governor Soludo’s proactive leadership. Dapo Abiodun, capturing the collective sentiment, remarked, “You are an economic genius,” a sentiment echoed by Governor Sanwoolu and Obasanjo, who highlighted how Soludo’s foresight and intervention saved Nigeria’s financial system at a critical juncture.

The consensus was clear: Professor Soludo's strategic consolidation of banks was a masterstroke that not only salvaged the financial sector from impending collapse but also laid the groundwork for sustainable economic growth. "The power of one man," as articulated by the book’s title, became a resounding endorsement of Governor Soludo's singular influence in reshaping the financial landscape, along with a capable team.

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State also joined in praising Soludo's achievements, underscoring the widespread admiration for his work. Prof. Akpan Hogan Ekpo, a renowned economist, succinctly captured the essence of Soludo’s impact with his assertion that “leadership is dealership in hope. Soludo is a leader.” This statement encapsulated the hope and confidence that Governor Soludo instilled in the nation during a time of economic uncertainty.

Reflecting on the current state of the Nigerian economy, many business leaders and politicians at the well-attended book launch drew parallels to the period of Soludo's reforms, noting the critical need for such visionary leadership once again. In a resonant remark, one speaker expressed the hope that if an Igbo man were to lead Nigeria in the near future, it should be none other than Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, acknowledging his unparalleled expertise and dedication to national development, aside his profound erudition.

As the evening progressed, it became evident that Governor Soludo’s legacy extends far beyond the realm of banking. His reforms not only stabilised the financial sector but also inspired a generation of leaders to pursue bold, transformative policies. The launch of "The Power of One Man" really provoked a resounding consensus about the enduring impact of Soludo’s work and a call to action for current and future leaders to emulate his visionary approach.

In a time when Nigeria’s economy is once again facing significant challenges as it was two decades ago, the reflections on Governor Soludo’s achievements clearly provided a reference point. The event underscored the importance of innovative and courageous leadership in navigating turbulent times and reaffirmed the belief that Soludo himself termed as confidence in the infinite possibilities of the Nigerian nation.

SOLUDO SWEARS-IN NEW TC CHAIRMEN, TASKS THEM ON DEEPENING GRASSROOT DEVELOPMENT

By Christian ABURIME

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has sworn-in the newly appointed Transition Committee Chairmen in the twenty one local government areas of the state.

Governor Soludo swore-in the Chairmen at the Government House, Awka.

The Governor congratulated the newly sworn-in Chairmen and commiserated with them largely because of paucity of funds and the humongous responsibilities they are expected to shoulder.

"You've now taken your oath of office and oath of allegiance, take the two oaths seriously.

"This is a call to service, a call to do something beyond yourself. Know that you are now being called upon to serve public purpose"; the Governor stated.

Governor Soludo wondered how people usually misinterpret what public office is all about, and expressed his administration's determination to ensure that every penny will be deployed to serve ndị Anambra.

"Our mantra is doing more with less. You are called upon in very challenging times where you have humongous responsibility but with minimal resources, joined to the fact that the purchasing power has gone done.

"We are very deliberate to have a local government devoted to service delivery to the grassroot.

"Of course, there are legacy issues, including backlog of pension arrears. We have been systematically clearing all of these, and we will keep on clearing it.

"I must reiterate that everyone who has retired since I assumed office, have received their gratuities" he noted.

Governor Soludo pointed out that new teachers are coming onboard, etc, explaining the logic behind the pooling of resources and added that if it is not done that way, most local governments will not be able to pay salaries.

"Our major emphasis is on transparency and accountability. The whole purpose is for you to do something greater that self. This position is not about titles.

"Here at the state level, we play down on the titles because these titles can become quite distracting. I am not interested in phantom titles. If you tell me your title, I'll ask about what you accomplished with your title.

"I'm glad that I took pains to interview each of you. Having done so, I've absolute confidence that you have what it takes to put your local government on the map. It is now for you to show it.

"There will be a retreat in the coming days. It'll give you the opportunity to reflect on what the job is all about. For me and ndị Anambra, our expectations are very high.

"You may have heard about our Public-Private-Community-Partnership, PPCP model. We enjoin all of you to deploy it in your respective local government areas"; the Governor added.

Introducing the new Chairmen, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr. Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne extolled the Governor for his novel approach to running the local government system.

"Thank you for what you are doing in the local government system in Anambra state.

"Mr. Governor, the in-coming TC Chairmen have gone through thorough screening and have been found worthy!

"I see courageous chairmen, I see determined and bold Chairmen.

"They are ready to implement the manifesto, to deliver on the mandate.

In a vote of thanks, the TC Chairman, Aguata Council Area, Dr. Chibueze Oforbuike said that the process they passed through adhered to democratic principle and promised to make the Governor and ndị Anambra proud.

The Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, accompanied the Governor to the event which was attended by Secretary To the State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, State Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Barr. Ifeatu Obiokoye, among others.

Soludo’s Take: How Can Nigeria Be Poor and Leaders Still Live Large?

By Christian ABURIME

In continuation of Democracy Day conversations, there is a compelling imperative to espouse a new orientation for Nigerians, including leaders at all levels of government. If we must birth a new, better Nigeria, a new Code of Conduct is inevitable. This is why Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, is calling for radical transparency, empathy, and a transformative approach to governance.

Governor Soludo’s unvarnished declaration that “Nigeria is very poor and broke” sets the tone for a sobering analysis of the nation’s fiscal reality. He highlighted the stark contrast between the country’s dwindling resources, austerity measures, prevailing hardship faced by citizens and the ostentatious lifestyles of public officials.

With projected revenues for the Federal Government amounting to about N6,160 per Nigerian per month and most states, excluding a few like Lagos, generating less than N3,000 per resident per month, the financial constraints are palpable. These meagre funds are expected to cover infrastructure, debt servicing, salaries, pensions, education, healthcare, and security.

Soludo’s position emphasized the urgent need for public officials to develop a consciousness of the public trust they bear. He called for a new code of conduct that instills empathy for the poor and a keen awareness that public resources are the people’s money, not the officials’. “We must be seen to embody the change we preach,” he asserted, advocating for government officials to adopt simpler, more modest lifestyles that reflect the nation’s economic reality.

In a bold suggestion, Soludo proposed a mandatory shift for government officials to use a secured equivalent of the Peugeot 504 from the Murtala Muhammed era, a stark departure from the current trend of luxury vehicles. He also aligned with the sentiment of Reverend Father Mbaka, advocating that all elected public officials should be paid the National Minimum Wage to feel how the shoes pinch common Nigerians. Showing leadership example, Soludo himself has not received a salary since taking office, choosing instead to donate it to the state. This symbolic gesture underscores his commitment to sacrifice and signals readiness for broader change.

At the larger level, Soludo invoked the spirit of the Mass Mobilization for Self-Reliance, Social Justice, and Economic Recovery (MAMSER) from President Babangida’s era, advocating for its reinvention to foster civic duty and accountability. This initiative would serve as a continuous reminder of the sacred obligations of both government officials and citizens. By breaking the transactional bargain between politicians and voters, Governor Soludo aims to disrupt the cycle of corruption that has entrenched itself in the political landscape.

Talking about corruption, a critical part of Soludo’s concern is the need to change the public’s perception and expectations of government officials. He highlighted the paradox where citizens decry corruption but simultaneously applaud officials who flaunt ill-gotten wealth. This societal contradiction, where integrity is often undervalued, must be addressed through a national conversation on accountability and ethical governance. By holding both leaders and citizens to higher standards, Soludo believes Nigeria can make sustainable progress.

So, by proposing a new code of conduct and the revival of MAMSER, Governor Soludo has outlined a path toward a more transparent, empathetic, and accountable governance structure. This transformative vision requires collective effort and a commitment to break the cycle of corruption and inefficiency. Only through such comprehensive reforms can Nigeria hope to emerge from its economic quagmire and pave the way for a brighter future. In other words, by embracing humility, empathy, and a renewed sense of civic duty, the nation can overcome its current challenges and build a more just and prosperous society.

TWO YEARS ON: ECHOES OF JOE ANATUNE (1960-2022)

By Christian ABURIME

In the rhythmic trajectory of our lives, some memories die hard. Some bonds endure longer.

A treasured physical presence may cease, yet their impact keeps echoing in the ears of time. Year after year, the heart grows fonder of the departed, as out of sight is never out of mind.

Such is the stuff of legend that the late Joe Anatune was made of. Time doesn't just fly; it runs relentlessly like a stream. And so, it is already two years ago that Joe took his abrupt exit from our midst, leaving behind hurts and holes in our hearts, yet with an indelible mark still guiding our steps.

Even amid the distracting hustle of daily life, one cannot but pause to remember Joe. An endearing enigma steeped in quiet wisdom, compassion, and leadership, Joe embodied the very essence of a gentle giant, physically and mentally.

Affectionately known as “Big Joe,” he exuded an affable, pleasant mien that brightened even the darkest of days. His presence was a constant source of comfort and strength, and his absence now leaves a void that hurts.

As a one-time Executive Director of Dawn Functions, CEO of B3 Communications, and a foremost apostle of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, Joe Anatune’s impact was phenomenal.

I was under his wings all the way, from the dawn till his sunset. He was a professional thoroughbred who walked the talk and always delivered.

In his elements, Joe was not merely a leader but a thinker whose brilliant ideas and exceptional passion inspired those around him to reach greater heights. His leadership was not defined by position, authority or title, but by empathy, understanding, and a profound belief in the potential of every individual under his guidance.

He nurtured talent, fostered growth, and cultivated a culture of excellence, ensuring that each member of his team felt valued and empowered.

Beyond the confines of the professional terrain, Joe transcended the role of mentor, becoming a trusted confidant and friend to many like me. His door was always open, offering not only professional guidance but also a listening ear and words of wisdom that resonated with sincerity and depth.

In moments of uncertainty, his reassuring presence served as a steady anchor, providing clarity amidst chaos and strength in times of adversity.

Joe's Midas touch extended to humanity, touching the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He approached life with a philosophical perspective, embracing each challenge as an opportunity for growth and each setback as a lesson in resilience. His profound insights and timeless wisdom continue to echo in our hearts, reminding us to cherish every moment, embrace every experience, and strive for excellence in all endeavours.

In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “The purpose of life is not just to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” Joe Anatune exemplified these principles in every facet of his being, leaving a legacy that transcends the boundaries of time and space.

As I reflect with gratitude on the impact of Joe Anatune on my life and career, I am again reminded of his infectious smile, calming composure and sharp intellect, which never ran out of stock

To me, Joe will always be remembered as the consummate professional, the quintessential advertising exemplar, and the public relations afficionado whose expertise made ripples.

Two years on, Joe Anatune no longer walks among us. Yet, his name endures through the countless lives he touched and the cherished memories he created.

Rest on in power, Big Joe.

Your light will continue to shine brightly, illuminating our paths and inspiring us to reach for the stars.

ADIEU DR CHUKWUEMEKA EZEIFE: A STATESMAN PAR EXCELLENCE AS ANAMBRA STATE BIDS FAREWELL

By Christian ABURIME

“Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones.” – Shannon Alder

Great men are known to move hearts in the same manner that they shake their world with great impact.
That is why, when they pass on, they are celebrated and cannot be forgotten.

Today, the sun sets on a great life well lived, as the sands of time shift to mark the end of an era. As Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, the indomitable Okwadike of Igbo Ukwu and former Governor of Anambra State, embarks on his final earthly journey with final funeral to be attended by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, this weekend, he is leaving an ineradicable legacy that will echo through the corridors of history, reflecting on his poignant principles, steadfast courage, and abiding love for his people.

Born into an era still grappling with the aftershocks of colonialism, Dr. Ezeife’s life was a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit.

From humble beginnings, he rose through the ranks, his intellect and determination propelling him to the highest echelons of leadership. Despite lacking formal secondary education, he became a self-made scholar, graduating from the University College, Ibadan and later obtaining his PhD from Harvard.

This intellectual prowess translated into a distinguished public career, rising as a federal permanent secretary to higher callings in his lifetime.

But it was from being the first civilian Governor of Anambra State (1992-1993) and later becoming a Political Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo in the Fourth Republic that Okwadike undeniably etched his name in history. He navigated the turbulent waters of the Third Republic with wisdom and foresight, laying the groundwork for the vibrant Anambra State we know today.

His economic policies, informed by his Harvard training and personal vision, were the seeds from which Anambra’s future prosperity sprouted, especially in the areas of education, healthcare and infrastructure.

Yet, Dr. Ezeife’s influence transcended the bounds of mere governance or partisan politics. He was a scholar, a philosopher, and a visionary, his words imbued with the wisdom of ages past and the foresight to shape a better tomorrow.

With a keen understanding of the intricate dynamics that wove together the diversity of Nigerian society, he was a tireless advocate for unity, progress, and the preservation of our rich cultural heritage.

As an ardent and proud Igbo patriot, he was a fearless, relentless fighter for a just cause, always speaking out against social injustice and seeking a better Nigeria built on inclusive governance. A statesman par excellence, Okwadike’s voice rang loud and clear in the halls of power, a clarion call for justice and equity.

His interventions, often laced with his signature wit, carried weight on the national stage. He was a champion of the downtrodden, a stalwart defender of the oppressed, his every action a demonstration of his stoic belief in the dignity of all people, no matter their tribe, tongue, class or faith.

His memories will always be cherished in the hearts of those whose lives he touched, whose burdens he sought to ease, and whose dreams he ignited with the fire of his impregnable spirit.

Even in retirement in his later years before his sun set last year, Dr. Ezeife remained a guiding light. His pronouncements were imbued with wisdom garnered from a life well-lived. He was a constant source of inspiration for aspiring politicians, a repository of knowledge for historians, and a model Igbo leader in whose patriotic footsteps others are treading.

Today, Anambra may be mourning the passage of a great leader but amidst the tears, there is gratitude. We are indebted to Okwadike for his selfless service, his noble vision, and his uncompromising belief in our state and our nation.

As he is laid to rest, we take solace in the knowledge that his legacy will continue to inspire our present and future generations of leaders. In bidding farewell to this colossus among men, Ndi Anambra and Nigerians at large must continue to celebrate the life he lived, the battles he fought, and the ideals he upheld.

For in the lapse of time, the spirit of Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife will live on, his memories will endure, and his life will be remembered as a veritable proof of the resilient strength of the human will, and a reminder that even in the darkest of times, hope may be temporarily dimmed but can never be quenched.
