IKWERRE MARKS INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD.

It was celebrated in full colour as Ikwerre Local Government joined the rest of the world to mark the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child with the theme“The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Front Lines of Crisis."

Held at the Council’s Multi-Purpose Hall, the event brought together girls from schools across the thirteen wards and communities of the Local Government.

The Special Guest and wife of the Executive Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government, Mrs. Christiana Wobodo, was warmly received by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Mrs. Ethel Kinika, and other women leaders in attendance.

In her opening address, Mrs. Wobodo encouraged the girls to believe in themselves and lead positive change in society.

A keynote talk on the event’s theme was delivered by Pastor Chidinma Iwuala, who inspired the girls to become voices of hope in times of crisis.

Other speakers, including Dr. Roseline Wali, Mrs. Faith Ezie, and Mrs. Elizabeth Alozie, also took turns to address the participants.

Notable guests such as the former Chairman’s wife, Mrs. Silver Nwanosike, Vice Chairman Hon. Ethel Kinika, and State PDP Woman Leader Mrs. Mirian Ogbonna shared words of encouragement.

The highlights of the event featured poetry recitation by Ichechi Alozie, drama performances, games, Liquid soap making practicals and presentation of gifts to participating schools.

Closing the event, the Director of Education, Mrs. Christiana Briggs, expressed gratitude to all participants and partners for their support in empowering the girl child.

The efficacy of libation by traditional institutions lies in its spiritual and social functions, providing a framework for communing with the divine, ancestors, and deities to express needs, hopes, and desires. While viewed as a powerful and unswerving act by practitioners, its efficacy is based on faith in the spiritual support of ancestors and the belief that libation facilitates interaction between the spirit and human worlds, rather than a scientifically measurable effect.

As a divine vehicle, practitioners seek the intercession of ancestors and deities for various needs, from blessings to protection.

In a historic move toward peace and reconciliation in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, His Royal Majesty, King Blessing Wagor Wagiri XI, Nye Nwe Ali of Isiokpo kingdom, led other royal highnesses and fathers in officially revoking the spiritual restrictions imposed during the period of crisis.

At the event, the traditional rulers offered prayers and blessings to the people of Ikwerre, declaring the land healed, protected, and open for progress.

This symbolic act represents another milestone on the path to lasting peace and sustainable development across Rivers State.

It will be recalled that during the height of the political unrest in Rivers State, traditional rulers in Ikwerre, led by the Nye-Nwe Ali of Isiokpo Ancient Kingdom, His Royal Majesty King Blessing Wagor Wagiri XI, and other Royal highnesses had performed spiritual rites and placed restrictions to safeguard the land and its people. Those measures were aimed at preventing further violence and protecting government property within the Local Government Area.
