When I started this business years ago, I never knew I would have a good relationship with our job men. There is this connect I developed with them overtime. It's inexplicable. Sometimes when I see them in their flawed state, it draws out mixed feelings. A blend of pity and disappointment. Pity in part because they are helpless, disappointment in part because I have spoken to them more than once. In all of this, do I judge them? No. I talk to them. Will always do. Won't stop. You know why? They listen to me. They have developed reverence for me.
These guys tell me stories of their struggle. They feel comfortable with me. That in turn made me believe there is hope. Now when it comes to addiction, it is universal. We all have what we are dealing with. Understanding your struggle with it don't make you any better than a man struggling with substance addiction. Gradually, these guys will be saved. I believe. God will do it.

This is Okwy, one of our best loaders here. Early June, he left the loading and offloading hustle and went to learn welding. He had an interesting agreement with his Oga. The agreement was that he will show up for training Monday to Friday and be allowed to do loading on Saturday. The oga obliged. Ever since then, he has been at it. Weld from Monday to Friday and show up Saturdays on the look out for the hustle. Quite aware of this new development, I reserve a slot for him if one arises. Okwy is gentle and resilient. He understands the place of gratitude.
Just three days ago, I saw him inside one of the shops here welding a Tile display stand. I was happy. This level of diligence touched me. I asked him of his consent to share his story here and he said yes. I will be sharing a video of Okwy trying to get his hustle on.. Will also attach his number. I got to find out that three of our loaders had no phone. I was disappointed. These are guys who makes money on a daily loading and offloading tiles. Not having a phone, even the keypad type of it, didn't make sense. I called one of them to my shop and began to ask him questions. He told me he has been making savings for it. For over a year? I knew he wasn't being truthful. I also got to find out that he spends some of the money on substance. Omo. This happened January this year.
Instead of judging him, I simply expressed my disappointment. Now here is the catch. The reason why I had the boldness to talk to him was because we have a certain level of relationship. I knew he would listen. While I spoke to him, he avoided every form of eye contact. He clearly wasn't proud of it. When I was done, he promised to do better. We shook hands and he left.
To make things easier, I steadily began to give him jobs. Loading and offloading. Yet, he couldn't get the phone. Last week Monday while I was still thinking about it, an idea came to mind. I gave him a job worth over 16,000. When the client sent his money to me, I used 12,500 from it to buy him a phone. One with keypad. When he came form his money, I presented the phone to him. He was confused at first. Until he wasn't. I gave him his balance and demanded he buys a sim.
Just this morning, a number called me. It was him. It was Chibueze. He was calling to give me his new number. A broad smile instantly came upon my face. At the end of the call, he said Thank you LIGHT. Thank God, I responded. To God be the Glory. Yes, it might be small, but to me, it is a BIG WIN.

When I came to my shop yesterday morning, I noticed the surrounding of my shop exceptionally clean. It was unusual. Intrigued, I pushed for answers. It was done by Chimaobi. From sweeping, he decided to w**d through. I was deeply touched. For those who don't know Chimaobi, he is one of our loaders here. A very close friend of mine. Free spirited and cheerful.
When you look at this act deeply, you realize that Chimaobi is smart. He understands the place of value exchange. He knew such neat gesture will in return push to me a place of reward. And did I reward him? I sure did. I tipped him and down the line around noon, when the services of a loader was needed, I gave it to him.
Here is the catch, when it was time to load the tiles, he wasn't here. His colleagues closed in at once trying to make me give them the job, but I held out. I looked for Chimaobi and gave him the job.
I learnt something deep from Chimaobi.
