COURT HALTS PDP NATIONAL CONVENTION
A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing the outcome of the forthcoming National Convention of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). The order was delivered by Justice James Omotosho on Friday, following a suit challenging the legitimacy of the convention.
According to Justice Omotosho, the PDP failed to comply with relevant laws and conditions for conducting such conventions. The judge noted that evidence presented showed that congresses were not held in some states, violating the law. Additionally, the court ruled that the PDP's National Chairman signing notices and correspondence without the National Secretary was a breach of the law, rendering such actions null and void.
The court also faulted the PDP for failing to issue the mandatory 21-day notice of meetings and congresses, which prevented INEC from carrying out its duty of monitoring the events. Justice Omotosho advised the PDP to comply with the law before proceeding with the election.
The court ultimately restrained INEC from receiving, publishing, or recognizing the outcome of the convention scheduled for Ibadan until the PDP complies with the law.
Reacting to the judgment, the PDP National Chairman, Iliya Damagun, and the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, expressed their views on the court's decision. Some party members also welcomed the judgment, stating that it would prevent impunity within the party.
