It was dusk and it was funeral of late Mrs. Elias Igwe. As custom, tradition and ordinance demand, there should be cannon shots during burials and funerals and the relevance lies in the belief that it aids the spirit of the deceased to gloriously transit to the world beyond. This cannon shot most often than not is a gunpowder compressed and compacted in a metallic hollow object known as cannon projectile which serves as a propellant, this cannon projectile is indigenously called NKPONANI, my dear people of Ukehe call it Nkulal'.

Shooting of cannon has its creepage in our culture that funerals without cannon shot is haphazardly done and gunpowder itself has crept in our culture that it has become an element of culture as an indigenous knowledge and practices.

It was time interlude to ignite the cannon projectile already buried beneath the ground in synchronized parallel in other to give Mama Peter Nwigwe the cannon honor.

I was frolicking in our compound while it was dark, the frightening sounds of the explosives were heard. One cannon projectile discharged itself from where it was shot and descended on my left scapula bone with severity, I was thrown on the floor. My mom seeing what happened exclaimed in fear, rushed, and raised my head she looked beside me and saw a cannon projectile lying beside me and was very hot. She called me but I couldn't respond, she called me severally but I couldn't make a speech. I was unconscious for a while and even when I gained consciousness I couldn't still find it easy to speak.

Everyone gathered and was afraid I may not survive it, I was about to be rushed to the hospital when I made my first speech.

I asked; Mama, what has happened? When I saw the numbers that have gathered. She called me and I answered, she called and I answered again. It was then that I felt an excruciating pain on my scapula (bone between the neck and shoulder), it was bleeding. What i heard next from those who gathered was; " Thank God it wasn't the sharp point of the cannon projectile that hit him"

It was obvious that it was the part of the cannon projectile in which gunpowder is compressed in, which has a sphere hole that descended on me.

Till date, a circle scar of that NKPONANI (cannon projectile) is still on my scapula and so legible.

It was a terrible incident that I decided to write about GUNPOWDER in my undergraduate project, since history and documentation is silent about it.

That boy from Umuofiagu who survived the incident has obtained a BACHELOR OF ARTS degree with what almost saw the end of him.

AFRICA IN TIME OF YORE (PRE-COLONIAL AFRICA)

That unfaithful hour of the day,
I sat to reminisce the nostalgic good old days.
With my palms in support of my jawbone,
I could recall how our antecedents stood so bold.
To uphold the virtue of our forebears.

Africa of old,
Was, but gold.
A land and race bedecked with monuments,
With no earth tectonics movement.
Africa, the home of our proud warriors.

Adversity fell upon us,
When people of west south side introduced civilization to us.
The recalcitrants taken into captivity,
Not minding our nativity.
And our able bodied men subjected to servitude and made us an object of inferiority.

Like a black moor they tupped our white ewe
And made us feel relegated even when we were as strong as yew.
Now we have abandoned our religion, and our dialect going extinct,
We have subscribed to the Caucasoid values and none of value is surviving extant .
We have lost our identity to the trends of civilization.
