🇳🇬JUST IN: Borno State just reintegrated another batch.
*What happened:
- “720 repentant Boko Haram members” were reintegrated into their communities this week, alongside “992 women and 2,050 children” who were part of their families.
- They completed a *rehabilitation and deradicalisation programme* at the Hajj Camp in Maiduguri after surrendering to troops at different times.
- Borno’s Special Adviser on Security, Brig. Gen. Abdullahi Ishaq Rtd, said the ex-insurgents willingly surrendered, were disarmed, rehabilitated, and made to *swear with the Holy Quran never to return* to insurgency before getting a “second chance”.
*The bigger picture:
Borno Govt says about *8,000 ex-Boko Haram members + families* have been reintegrated so far under the “Borno Model” — roughly 75% success rate. Most of those who surrendered weren’t frontline fighters but cooks, logistics suppliers, and family members who lived in insurgent camps. Many women and children came out with trauma, health issues, and little exposure to normal society.
The state set up skills training, education, healthcare, and starter packs to help them resettle. Community leaders from Konduga, Dikwa, Ngala, Marte, Bama, Gwoza, etc. were involved in screening them.
*Controversy: The programme, known as Operation Safe Corridor + “Borno Model”, sparks debate every time. Victims’ groups and some Nigerians argue reintegration without addressing victims’ pain sends the wrong signal. Amnesty Int’l and NBA have also called for more transparency on who’s being released and their level of involvement.
Borno Govt maintains that many surrendered insurgents are rejected by Boko Haram/ISWAP if they try to return, and that deradicalisation is key to long-term peace.
What do you think about the reintegration approach — should they be given a second chance or not?
