Eclampsia is a severe pregnancy complication characterized by new-onset seizures in a person with high blood pressure, which usually develops after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
It is an escalation of preeclampsia and is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment to manage the seizures and prevent serious complications like stroke, organ damage, or maternal death.
Treatment involves medications like magnesium sulfate and emergency delivery of the baby.
Symptoms and signs
Seizures: The most defining symptom, involving shaking, convulsions, and potential loss of consciousness.
High blood pressure: A key indicator, often developing after the 20th week of pregnancy.
Preeclampsia symptoms: May include a severe headache, vision changes (like blurred vision or seeing spots), upper abdominal pain, confusion, or a sudden increase in weight.
Complications
For the mother:
Aspirin pneumonia, cerebral hemorrhage, kidney failure, and cardiac arrest are possible complications. The seizures themselves can also cause injuries, such as head trauma or broken bones from falling.
For the baby:
Eclampsia can lead to premature birth, low birth weight or placenta abruption
Prevention
Regular prenatal care is crucial for early detection of preeclampsia, which can help prevent eclampsia
