Mbata, Nwoko, others storm Awka for 2025 Igbo day celebration

Prominent Igbo leaders, including the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator Azuta Mbata, and Distinguished Senator Ned Nwoko, are set to storm Awka, Anambra State, for the 2025 Igbo Day Commemoration scheduled for Sunday, September 28 and Monday, September 29, 2025.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ezechi Chukwu, confirmed that Mbata will serve as Chief Host, while Nwoko will chair the occasion. The host governor is Prof. Charles Soludo, Governor of Anambra State.

This year’s commemoration, with the theme “Onye aghana nwanne ya” (Be your brother’s keeper), is designed to reflect the spirit of Igbo unity, remembrance, and resilience.

According to Ohanaeze, “Igbo Day remains a solemn and sacred occasion in the Igbo national calendar. It is a moment for collective reflection, honoring above all the memory of late Igbo patriots and heroes whose sacrifice continues to inspire the spirit of unity, justice and peace among Ndigbo.”

The two-day event will begin with a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, September 28, across churches in Igbo land. Later that day, by 4:00 pm, the Igbo Day Lecture will take place at Hilton Leisure Hotel, Awka, featuring eminent scholars, cultural leaders, and stakeholders.

The main commemoration is billed for Monday, September 29, at Ekwueme Square, Awka, with prayers, tributes, and cultural performances showcasing Igbo heritage.

Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Prince Okey Nwadinobi, urged widespread participation, saying: “We call on all Igbo sons and daughters, friends of Ndigbo and lovers of justice and unity to be part of this year’s historic event. Together, we remember. Together, we rise.”
