Igbo-Eze South LGA Begins Phase II Massive Youth Empowerment and Soft Skills Training Programme

The Igbo-Eze South Local Government Council, under the leadership of the Executive Chairman and Deputy Chairman of ALGON in Enugu State, Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, has once again intensified its youth development drive as it flagged off a comprehensive employability and entrepreneurship programme designed to equip young people with modern workplace skills and reduce unemployment across the area.

The initiative, titled ‘The Jobberman Free Soft Skills and Employability Training Phase II’, is a collaboration between the council and the Rural Engagement and Development Foundation (REDFOUNDATION). It commenced on Thursday, 14th May 2026 at Ovoko Social Club Hall, Ajuona, covering three wards; Ajuona, Umulolo and Umuelo ward, and is targeted at entrepreneurs and jobseekers aged 18 to 35, with training scheduled to run concurrently across all 16 wards of the local government area until 30 June 2026. The programme, which commenced yesterday in Ovoko community, continued today, while the grand finale and concluding training sessions are scheduled to be held tomorrow.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Mayor Ukwueze who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Odo Anthony, said the programme aligns with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the economic transformation agenda of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State. He emphasized that the administration has consistently prioritised human capital development as a core pillar of governance in the local government. He also called on interested individuals within the community to take advantage of the ongoing training and participate actively in the programme.

This latest intervention builds on a series of earlier empowerment and skills development programmes executed by the council. These include the Jobberman Free Soft Skills and Employability Training Phase I, the Youths Training Initiative on Ethical Artificial Intelligence Skills that equipped 500 youths in Enugu North Senatorial Zone with AI skills, the One-Youth-One-Skill Programme, designed to provide practical vocational skills to youths across all wards, and strategic collaborations with the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) to strengthen vocational and technical training opportunities in the area. The council has also previously implemented the Bursary, Tech and Agro Empowerment Programme, which supported thousands of youths with educational bursaries, ICT training, and agribusiness development support. In addition, through partnership-driven initiatives such as soft skills and employability training programmes implemented with development organisations, hundreds of youths, particularly young women have been trained and linked to employment opportunities, while others have benefited from sponsored vocational training in trades such as fashion design, hairdressing, baking, and confectioneries.

According to the chairman, the continuous rollout of such programmes reflects a deliberate strategy to build a self-reliant youth population. “Our goal is to ensure that no youth in Igbo-Eze South is left behind in the digital economy. We are not just giving them fish; we are teaching them how to fish by providing the soft skills that top-tier employers demand,” he said.

The current programme offers participants several post-training benefits, including a MasterCard Foundation-recognised soft skills certificate, access to zero-interest loans and business grants, sponsored vocational enrolment, educational support such as scholarships and JAMB registration assistance, as well as welfare tools like mobile phones and power banks to support digital learning.

The initiative has been widely described as one of the most ambitious grassroots empowerment interventions in the state, with strong turnout recorded across the 16 wards. Community leaders also commended the council for sustaining a consistent pattern of empowerment programmes and for decentralising development initiatives to reach rural communities directly.

Today, at the Council's Secretariat, I had an interactive session with the sixteen ward Councillors of our dear Local Government Area. The engagement reaffirmed our shared commitment to transformative leadership inspired by the governance model of His Excellency, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, whose vision of disruptive innovation and people-centred service continues to guide our work at the grassroots.

In our discussion, the Lawmakers reflected on several milestones we have achieved together. They acknowledged the ongoing reconstruction of our local government secretariat into an ultra modern edifice as well as the paving of the access road in the secretariat premises. They also highlighted the water borehole projects across the wards, the extensive road grading and soil stabilisation initiatives and the restoration of electricity in many communities along with other impactful projects touching the daily lives of our people. Above all, they commended the peace, stability and sense of inclusiveness that have flourished under our administration.

I expressed my sincere gratitude for their steadfast support and collaboration despite the various challenges we have confronted as a government and as a people. I reminded them that although their tenure is gradually approaching its climax, they must continue to see this period as a gateway to broader opportunities. The governance philosophy of His Excellency teaches us that every phase of service, when approached with excellence and innovation, becomes a stepping stone to greater possibilities.

I encouraged them to take full ownership of the ongoing projects in their respective wards and to ensure they are closely and properly monitored. Effective oversight at the community level is essential to sustaining the momentum of development and delivering outcomes that reflect the Renewed Hope Agenda we collectively uphold.

Indeed, we have grown into a formidable union. Our bond transcends official roles and will endure even beyond public office. Above everything else, we remain an indivisible family committed to accelerating growth, deepening peace and driving the transformation of Igbo-Eze South in alignment with what My Principal, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, a man I usually describe as a "modern wonder in the realms of governance" is doing in the state.

What Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze is doing in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area shows that there’s still the possibility of rescuing the Enugu North Senatorial Zone from political doldrums.

Barr Ukwueze has shown that there are still young visionary leaders in Enugu North.

Just watch how the Igbo Eze South LG chairman is breathing life back into the dead infrastructures in the local government.

The ultramodern secretariat he’s building is 96% ready, and he’s also paving a lot of access roads in the local government.

This is just a fraction of what the chairman is doing without disturbing the media with noise.

The chairman has also empowered a lot of Igbo Eze South LG youths through variously numerous Skill Acquisition Programs.

He has also silently solved the insecurity problem in Igbo Eze South Local Government Area.

I’m not from Igbo Eze South, but I’m very much impressed with what Barr Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze is doing in that local government.

Enugu First Lady Champions Girl-Child Empowerment as Igbo-Eze South Celebrates International Day of the Girl Child

In commemoration of the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child, the Igbo-Eze South Local Government, in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady, Enugu State and Custos Care Foundation, on Friday, 17th October 2025, hosted a transformative programme themed “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls in the Frontlines of Crisis”, in celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child.

The event, held with the participation of young girls from different secondary schools across Igbo-Eze South, underscored the commitment of Her Excellency, Mrs Nkechinyere Mbah, to advancing the rights, voices and potentials of the girl child in Enugu State.

Represented by her Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Barr. Chidimma Egonu, Her Excellency Mrs Nkechinyere Ihuoma Mbah, whose passion for nurturing the potentials of young girls continues to shape progressive conversations across the state emphasised the need for collective action in empowering the young girls to become active agents of change.

“Every girl has a unique voice and an irreplaceable role in building the society we desire. Our duty as leaders, parents and mentors is to ensure that no girl is left behind, no dream is stifled and no ambition is diminished,” Her Excellency remarked.

In her opening address, the wife of the Chairman of Igbo-Eze South, Barr. Empress Ugo-Ferdinand, reaffirmed her commitment to complementing the vision of the Enugu State First Lady in creating an enabling environment for girls to thrive intellectually and socially.

The event featured a rich blend of inspirational talks and interactive sessions aimed at empowering the girl child to overcome societal stereotypes and embrace leadership roles with confidence and purpose.

The Managing Director of Custoscare Foundation, Comrade Egodi Blessing, delivered a session on "Breaking Stereotypes and Building Capacity." She inspired the students with stories of resilience and urged them to rise above limiting narratives and channel their energy towards productive ventures that would contribute to their growth.

In a deeply reflective session, Hon. Ego Aja, Member 3, ENSUBEB, addressed the growing menace of social vices among young people. She urged them to stay focused, uphold moral discipline and embrace education and creativity as tools for societal development. She maintained that greatness is not defined by gender, but by courage and purpose.

Furthermore, Nurse Blessing Ngwu sensitised participants on S*x Education and Health Hygiene, while Hon. Prisca Okeke, Special Assistant to the Governor on Youths and Students Affairs led a session on leadership, self-belief and responsibility.

Adding to the inspiring lineup, the Zonal Commander of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Enugu Zonal Command, represented by Mrs Olayi Judith, Head of the Public Enlightenment Unit, led a deeply educative session on child trafficking and trafficking in persons. She sensitised the students on the dangers of trafficking, early warning signs and the importance of vigilance within their communities. She drew attention to the need for collective responsibility in protecting children and vulnerable persons from exploitation, aligning with global efforts to safeguard the dignity and future of every child.

The celebration was also laced with fun, creativity and competition, as the students participated in spoken-word performances, singing, dancing and inter-school debates, all centred around the theme of the girl child as a beacon of hope and transformation. These activities not only showcased the talents of the girls but also deepened their understanding of self-expression and confidence in public engagement.

In keeping with the day’s message of care and empowerment, essential items such as sanitary pads, writing materials, and toiletries were distributed to the participants. In addition, cash prizes were awarded to outstanding students who excelled in the various competitions and skill exhibitions, reinforcing the value of excellence and hard work.

Other dignitaries at the event included the Secretary to Igbo-Eze South Local Government, Hon. Zacchaeus Ukwueze; the Education Secretary of Igbo-Eze South, Hon. Jude Judemary Ugwu; the Chief of Staff to the Chairman of Igbo-Eze South, Comrade Anthony Odo and others.

The event also highlighted strong institutional collaboration, with Nigerian Breweries, NAPTIP, JRB Group, Doxer Moms and Babies and the Ugo-Ferdinand Foundation partnering to make the day a remarkable success.

The International Day of the Girl Child celebration in Igbo-Eze South thus became not only a call to action but also a reaffirmation of faith in the capacity of young girls to lead, inspire and transform society; one step, one dream and one vision at a time.
