NDE Commends Igbo-Eze South Chairman, Approves LGA as Hub for Skill Acquisition in Enugu North Senatorial District

…Second phase of Renewed Hope Initiative to take off at Ibagwa Aka

The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has commended the Executive Chairman of Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area and Deputy Chairman of ALGON, Enugu State, Hon. Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, for his unalloyed commitment to youth empowerment, skills development and poverty alleviation.

The commendation came in a formal letter from the Director-General of the NDE, His Excellency Silas A. Agara, which was presented to Hon. Ukwueze by the State Coordinator of the Directorate, Mr. Oluka Godwin, during a courtesy visit to the council.

Mr. Godwin, who stood in for the DG, said the recognition was in acknowledgment of the Chairman’s consistent partnership with the Directorate in tackling unemployment at the grassroots. According to him, Hon. Ukwueze’s leadership has provided a platform for meaningful engagement of youths, which aligns with the Federal Government’s vision for sustainable national development.

“The Directorate has observed with admiration the Chairman’s passion for youth development and his commitment to poverty alleviation strategies. This is the kind of leadership we need at the local level to drive employment generation and reduce youth restiveness,” the State Coordinator said.

As part of the recognition, the NDE has approved Igbo-Eze South LGA to serve as the coordinating hub for all skill acquisition and vocational training programmes across the Enugu North Senatorial Zone. This designation positions the area as a zonal centre for enterprise development, job creation and youth empowerment initiatives.

In a related development, the Directorate announced that the second phase of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative Programme will be anchored at the Skill Acquisition Centre located in Ibagwa Aka, Igbo-Eze South. The programme, which focuses on entrepreneurship, vocational training and support for small-scale businesses, is expected to benefit hundreds of youths and women across the zone.

Responding after receiving the commendation letter, Hon. Ukwueze expressed appreciation to the NDE for recognizing his administration’s efforts. He assured the Directorate of the council’s readiness to provide an enabling environment and necessary support for the effective implementation of the training programmes.

“Our priority remains creating opportunities for our youths, empowering them with the right skills and reducing the burden of unemployment in our communities. This recognition only strengthens our resolve to continue partnering with national and state agencies for the benefit of our people,” Hon. Ukwueze stated.

Stakeholders and community leaders in attendance hailed the development, describing it as a landmark achievement that would not only empower youths of Igbo-Eze South but also attract opportunities to the wider Enugu North Senatorial Zone.
With Igbo-Eze South now designated as a skill acquisition hub, expectations are high that the council area will witness a new wave of economic activities, innovative enterprises, and reduced unemployment, further driving the Federal Government’s goal of inclusive and sustainable development.

1. Beach Junction – Ibagwa-Aka – Ogurute – Ette Road

On behalf of the government and the good people of Igbo-Eze South, I am immensely proud to congratulate one of our own sons of the soil, Hadi Haruna Jnr, on his recent call-up to the ongoing match at the Super Eagles Home-Based Team for the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

This is not just a personal milestone for Hadi, who has distinguished himself as a player with Remo Stars FC, it is a moment of collective pride for all of us in Igbo-Eze South. His achievement affirms a simple yet powerful truth: dreams born in the grassroots can thrive on the national stage.

I see in Hadi’s journey a compelling story of resilience, determination and unrelenting belief. From humble beginnings to national recognition, he has shown that impossibility is nothing. His rise is a living testament to what our young people can accomplish when given the right support and encouragement.

Indeed, there are many more Hadis across Igbo-Eze South, brimming with diverse talents in sports, the arts, entrepreneurship, science and technology, only waiting to be discovered and nurtured. This is precisely why our administration remains committed to skills acquisition, talent discovery and youth development. We understand that investing in our young people today secures the future of our local government and propels us towards inclusive prosperity.

This development strongly aligns with the Tomorrow is Here initiative of His Excellency, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, the Executive Governor of Enugu State, who has placed youth empowerment and grassroots transformation at the heart of his governance. Hadi’s success is an example of the Governor’s vision being realised in real time.

As a leader and a father, I am encouraged by what this signifies, not just for Hadi, but for every young person watching from the sidelines, wondering if greatness is within reach. It is. And it begins with belief, discipline and opportunity.

I remain committed to supporting platforms that elevate our youth and showcase their talents. Hadi has made us proud and I believe his story will continue to inspire a generation that is hungry for progress and ready to lead.

Once again, congratulations, Hadi. You have flown the flag of Igbo-Eze South high and we are solidly behind you as you soar to greater heights.

On behalf of the government, the good people of Igbo-Eze South and as a proud alumnus of the University of Nigeria, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Professor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya on his historic emergence as the Vice Chancellor of our great institution.

Professor Ortuanya’s appointment is not only a personal triumph but a monumental milestone for the people of Nsukka, as he becomes the first son of the soil to occupy this esteemed office. His emergence, after what was undoubtedly a rigorous and highly competitive selection process, stands as a testament to his exceptional competence, dedication and proven track record of excellence in the various strategic positions he has held over the years.

I wish to express profound appreciation to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Senator Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for ensuring that the process was transparent, credible and truly reflective of merit. His Excellency’s incommutable commitment to due process in federal appointments, particularly in our nation’s citadels of learning, reaffirms the administration’s respect for academic integrity and institutional autonomy.

May I also extend my sincere gratitude to my principal, a modern wonder in the realm of governance, His Excellency, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, the Executive Governor of Enugu State. His quiet but resolute support and commitment to the success of this process played a crucial role in ensuring that the Vice Chancellorship election was conducted seamlessly. The University of Nigeria, being not just a state treasure but a national and global beacon of learning, deserved nothing less and under his visionary leadership, that standard was upheld.

I also wish to extend my deep appreciation to the five-man panel, ably led by Engr. Kayode Ojo, the University of Nigeria Governing Council and all other key players and stakeholders who contributed to ensuring a transparent and merit-driven selection process. Their commitment to integrity and excellence not only upholds the values of the institution but also reinforces the University of Nigeria’s national relevance as a beacon of academic distinction and leadership.

May Professor Ortuanya’s tenure usher in an era of renewed academic excellence, innovation and global relevance for the University of Nigeria.

Unadu Farm Estate Road Grading Begins: A Giant Leap Toward Agro-Economic Revolution in Enugu State

On Thursday, 17th July 2025, the Executive Chairman of Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, Hon. Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, officially flagged off the grading of the access road leading to the permanent site of the Unadu Farm Estate; an agricultural powerhouse in the making.

The Unadu Farm Estate is one of 260 modern Smart Farms being established across all electoral wards of Enugu State, under the visionary agro-economy initiative of His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. The project is designed not only to boost food production but to transform Enugu into a major player in local and international food markets.

Facilitated in collaboration with local government authorities, each Smart Farm Estate spans hundreds of hectares and is equipped with a minimum of two tractors, provided directly by the state government. In addition, large-scale storage facilities are being introduced to preserve farm yields and ensure minimal post-harvest loss.

The Unadu site is just one of sixteen Farm Estates sited across Igbo-Eze South, making the LGA a major contributor to the broader goal of agricultural sustainability and economic diversification in the state.

Beyond local consumption, the state government has expressed a strong commitment to buying off the farm produce, with concrete plans already in motion to begin exports to international markets.

As the bulldozers roared to life and dust rose along the paths to be cleared, it was evident: the journey toward a food-secure and economically vibrant Enugu State is no longer a dream—it is becoming reality, from ward to ward.

Understanding the Real Security Situation in Eha-Amufu: My Personal Encounter

By Papa Chelsea (Anikwe Kelvin)

Okay guys, let’s get talking. I finally accepted the challenge to speak out on this issue. Some people have been calling me out and are like, Papa Chelsea, you’re quick to condemn Benue State attacks and killings by militant herdsmen and keep quiet in the Isi Uzo, particularly Eha-Amufu attacks and the ones that happened in Umunneochi area of Abia state.

Let’s get it right. There were pockets of attacks in the last few days in different parts of the country. I decided to single out Benue state because of the patterns of attacks and wave of violence in that area. The number of casualties and the aim of these attackers have been systematic.

Truth is, I have always been critical of Gov Mbah administration right from campaign days. Man is Labour Party and I have my sentiment, but I will not join in vilifying an innocent man when I have the facts with me. Forget about sentiments. Just perish it for once and face the issue on ground.

I have lived in Enugu since Governor Sullivan Chime days. There was a time that even government barricaded Government House due to fear of insecurity. But just look at Enugu today and compare. It’s like darkness against light.

I will tell you why I decided to stay calm in Enugu and Abia states’ incidents, while I joined my voice to call out government in Benue. Benue attacks had some concerted patterns. The helpless people there are battling for survival. It’s an existential threat to wipe them out and grab their land by these criminals. The pattern dates back many years – attacks on Tiv communities, Idoma communities, and like their king said, it’s recurring massacres.

How about Eha-Amufu in Isi Uzo? As someone with security background, I snooped around matters and even paid some visits to the areas. I spoke with my contact persons on the recent attack in the Agu-Amede autonomous community. From the g*therings I made, the issue has lingered for years. Between 2021 and 2022, it was a hotbed of war zone in Isi Uzo. The wave of attack was shocking and also a result of spillover effect.

When I visited Eha-Amufu two days ago, I was taken to different farm settlements and remote villages like Agu-Mgbuji, Ogbete, Ibeje, Agu-Amede and other bordering communities with Benue. Those places are yet to see civilisation in the real time as there was no network. The only road I saw is the 21.7km road constructed by Govt of Mbah. I saw structures like smart schools and hospitals under construction. The road runs through forests and settlements. I think they actually need network for connectivity.

On the cause of the attacks, I learnt from some elders of the place that the attackers were on a retaliatory mission caused by the neighbouring communities in Eha-Amufu. I was curious to know more. Why retaliatory? Why revenge mission?

HOW IT HAPPENED

Early in the month, some people in Eha-Amufu organised themselves and attacked some herdsmen, killed score of them and had them buried in shallow graves and even announced it on their platforms. That matter escalated to the government. The state and local governments called for meetings and tried to strike a peace deal between the communities and the families of the herdsmen.

In the midst of the peace talks, the people said security was deployed just to prevent reprisals by the herders.

The matter isn’t funny. Close to 15 herdsmen lost their lives but the guys who organised themselves to conduct the attacks despite warning from their elders disappeared and couldn’t stay back to defend their people.

Now, these herders came to those communities with the help of their collaborators in the Mgbuji and Eha-Amufu area, they exhumed the dead bodies of their people and took them back to the north. Nobody made a noise about it o. It was not reported on the social media and these social media influencers pretended nothing happened. Shebi na human lives we dey talk about? Inasmuch as I no dey support these herders destroying farmlands, killing them shouldn’t be the first solution.

After that, I heard Mbah deployed security everywhere which tried to stop the reprisals but the militants made a surprised attack on those living at another border settlement far from other communities.

You know the problem, nobody was talking about the herdsmen that were murdered. They are human beings abi? Things g*t to be balanced. All lives are precious; and all lives matter. My heart goes to all the people affected.

But I just would put things in proper perspective to understand the situation. I was glad to see security from the state take over the whole area and set up security camps in border settlements. That’s what the government owes the people. Reassuring them that normalcy would be restored and follow it up. Make your own independent and unbiased findings too.

We just need lasting peace in that area. Attacks and reprisals are uncivilised and should be avoided.

I will still beam my torchlight on Abia killings by the same notorious herders. Follow my page. But falsehoods just dey everywhere. Abeg, share information with me any time and you will see me land your caban.

Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, says his administration is laying the foundations for the state’s prosperity and future.

Mbah stated this while addressing a mammoth crowd that g*thered at Okpara Square, Enugu, to felicitate him on his second anniversary in office on Thursday.

“In just two years, we have begun to rewire the foundation of Enugu State for future promise. We have constructed over 800 kilometers of roads, opening access to farms, markets, industry, schools, and hospitals.

“To date, we have delivered five ultra-modern terminals across the state: Holy Ghost Terminal 1 for interstate travel with a skybridge to Terminal 2; Holy Ghost Terminal 2 for intra-city transport; Gariki Terminal; Abakpa Terminal; and Nsukka Terminal – all ready to be commissioned.

“We have allocated 33 percent of our budget to education alone, surpassing even global benchmarks, because we believe that our future is forged in classrooms. Soon, we will begin the rollout of 260 Smart Green Schools, equipped with digital whiteboards, science labs, and solar-powered experiential learning spaces.

“Alongside this, we are building 260 fully equipped Primary Healthcare Centres across every ward, each designed with staff quarters, solar panels, and clean water. No mother in Enugu should ever again fear childbirth due to distance or neglect,” he said.

Governor Mbah noted that security remained the foundation of all progress, and said his government had “launched a state-of-the-art Command and Control Centre, deploying 150 AI-enabled security patrol vehicles, and witnessed the decline in violent crime, making it possible again for citizens to travel, trade, and sleep in peace.”

On the side of the economy, he said, “We’ve increased our internally generated revenue (IGR) by over 600 per cent, revived moribund assets, launched investment drives, and improved our ease of doing business while laying the groundwork for agro-industrial systems that will feed, employ, and empower our people.

“We have equally created 300,000 hectares of Landbank to be leased to large scale commercial farmers, while establishing 200 hectares of Farm Estate in all the 260 wards in the state to scale up agricultural production across the value chain, both for export and the local market.

“We didn’t stop there. We completed the Enugu International Conference Centre, giving our state a place on the global stage. We launched Enugu Air, a bold venture that will transform Enugu into a globally-connected economic powerhouse.

“We have conceived a radical overhaul of our transport system, procuring 200 CNG buses and 2,000 city taxis. Our ticketing technology will significantly reduce transport costs for families,” he added.

He also highlighted the state’s investments in tourism, among others, noting however, that all those were “just the beginning of the story,” given his plans for the state.

Speaking, a former governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo, said Mbah had done well in building and transforming the state.

“What I can tell you today is that no other state has done what Enugu has done. For me, you are going to continue to be our governor. Everyone knows you are doing well,” he stated.

Also speaking, business mogul, Engr. Arthur Eze, described Mbah as God’s gift to Igbo land and Nigeria, saying no one could stop his re-election.

“God is a wonderful God. He brought your son, Peter Mbah to change Igbo land. When I came into the city, from Airport to the city, I noticed he has changed the whole Enugu,” Eze said.

The Speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu and Hon. Nnoli Nnaji of the House of Representatives, pledged their continued cooperation with the governor.

Speaking on behalf of returnees to the Peoples Democratic Party, former governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Hon. Chijioke Edeoga, and LP chieftains, vowed to work for the success of the Mbah administration.

“On behalf of the members of the National Assembly, State House of Assembly, who have joined us back in PDP, we commit ourselves once again to PDP and the ideals of the party. We stand and will fight for the PDP, and for our governor to the end,” he said.

Governor Mbah's second anniversary was also marked with a holy mass at the Government House Chapel.

Gov Mbah Flags Off Stallion Vehicle Assembly Plant and Automotive Infrastructure

…says Enugu moving from consumer-based to production-driven economy

In a groundbreaking move to reposition Enugu State as a premier destination for investment, Governor Peter Mbah has flagged off the Stallion Vehicle Assembly Plant and Automotive Infrastructure, saying the initiative was part of the administration’s effort to transition the state from a consumer-based to a production-driven economy.

Performing the symbolic foundation-laying ceremony on Wednesday in Owo community, alongside the Group Managing Director of Stallion Group, Mr. Mahesh Vaswani, and other dignitaries including Dr. Obi Ozor, Pharm. Chika Ugwuoke, Dr. Malachy Agbo, Mrs. Ngozi Enih and Hon Patrick Ubru, commissioners for transport, labour and employment, poverty eradication, children, gender and social development, and agriculture and agro-industrialization, respectively, Governor Mbah described the investment as a strategic step in the state's journey towards industrialization, innovation, and inclusive economic transformation.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the governor stated that the plant would initially assemble and deliver 2,000 hybrid sedans, with plans to begin bus assembly in the near future.

According to him, “Today’s groundbreaking marks the beginning of a new industrial era. Through our partnership with Stallion MG Automobiles Ltd - globally respected brand with decades of automotive experience - we are launching a state-supported programme to assemble and deliver 2,000 hybrid sedans, with plans to expand into bus production.”

Stressing that the plant would create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, such as engineers, service technicians, administrative staff, logistics providers, and retail partners, the governor said that the vehicles would support clean energy initiatives and serve as part of the youth empowerment taxi scheme for dignified employment.

“It will also serve as a training ground for the next generation of automotive engineers, with clear frameworks for technology transfer and skills development. Beyond job creation, we see this plant as a catalyst for something bigger; positioning Enugu as the automotive hub of the South East, Nigeria, and the wider West African region,” he added.

Governor Mbah thanked the Stallion Group for the partnership and trust in the state, reiterating his administration’s vision to transform Enugu, empower its people, strengthen the economy, and promote local productivity with global relevance.

He also encouraged young people in the state to seize the opportunity to acquire skills in the automotive industry and become global players, while expressing appreciation to the host community and stakeholders for their support and collaboration.

Speaking earlier, the commissioners for transportation, as well as the commissioner for children, gender and social development commended the project, noting that it aligns with the state's climate policy and action plan, which aim to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.

They appreciated the host community for embracing the project, urging them to protect the infrastructure and cooperate with the company.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Nkanu East Local Government Area, Hon. Okechukwu Edeh, praised the governor for the bold reforms undertaken over the past two years, which he said were already attracting local and foreign investors to the state.

He assured that the council would continue to provide an enabling environment for investors and called for more investment opportunities in the local government area.

Describing the assembly plant as more than a launch, the Group Managing Director of Stallion Group said the project reflects a shared vision of innovation, collaboration, and economic growth for both Enugu State and Nigeria.

“We thank His Excellency for partnering with us to advance the automotive development plant and for his vision of a clean, efficient transport system. This collaboration will enhance transport infrastructure, create jobs, and place Enugu on the map in Africa’s auto industry,” Mr. Vaswani stated.

He further stressed that the project aligned with the state’s renewable energy goals and green innovation strategy, as well as President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to encourage local manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports.

Nigeria’s Biggest Tech Conference Opens in Enugu
…Minister Bosun: I’ve never seen anything so big
…Mbah: We’re driven by the knowledge that the future is technology

The 2025 Enugu Tech Festival being organised by the Enugu State Government kicked off on Wednesday with the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, describing it as the biggest technology conference that has ever happened in Nigeria.

Tijani said the Tech Festival, which attracted thousands of youths from within and outside the state, was a major leap for Nigeria’s determination to build a robust digital economy, noting that Enugu State under Governor Peter Mbah, had moved from policy to progress to lead the tech revolution in Nigeria.

This was even as Governor Peter Mbah urged the youths to embrace technology, insisting that the future is technology.

Speaking, the Minister said that the Tech Festival, tagged Coal to Code, fitted into the agenda and activities of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, having recognised that the future of digital economy in Nigeria would not only be built in Abuja, but would instead be co-created across all states.

“Enugu is showing how this should and will be done. I have never, never been to a conference on technology in Nigeria that is this big. I founded the first technology hub in Nigeria, the very first in Nigeria. So, I know a thing or two when technology people g*ther. I can assure you that today, you are part of history because we have never seen anything this big in Nigeria before.

“There is something powerful about your state: the energy, the ambition, the possibilities. Just two years ago, only a few people could imagine this kind of tech momentum. But today, Enugu has not just imagined, Enugu is building it. Under two years, we have seen investment in digital infrastructure, and the innovation ecosystem of the state.

“What is happening today in Enugu is part of something bigger. We are now witnessing a generational rise, not one where people complain and protest, but one where creativity is used to shape the future. Not just with passion, but with precision,” he stated.

While commending the participants for rising to “create the kind of Nigeria the world will pay attention to,” Tijani called for collaboration, commitment, and hard work by all stakeholders to make it happen.

“Progress is not automatic, but needs all of us. It needs the government to continue to be brave. It needs the private sector to invest deeper. It needs mentors, builders, teachers, and it needs leaders,” he concluded.

Speaking, Governor Mbah, while highlighting how his administration had invested in technology to dramatically revolutionise security, land administration, education, among others, noted that the Enugu Tech Festival was part of his government’s wider efforts to build the youth of the state into wealth creators and highly sought-after workforce of tomorrow’s workplace.

“The power of technology and innovation and what we can accomplish is something that I want the youths to be mindful of. If you look at the way things are being done in the world today, we are now talking about an era where people just sit down with great ideas, create platforms where they begin to essentially benefit from that platform.

“An example is the Uber that came and disrupted the city taxi without owning a key. Today, they provide by far the largest traffic just by creating a platform. You can extend that to Airbnb. Without owning a key, these guys have disrupted the business of those who own several brick and mortar houses. You can also extend that to Tesla. That is the power of technology. This shows essentially that technology is where the future is,” he emphasised.

In his remark, the Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Lawrence Ezeh, said the Enugu Tech Festival, which would now become an annual event, underscored a paradigm shift from the old Enugu known for coal to one that has become a rising force in Nigeria’s tech-driven future, a beacon of innovation, intellectual capital, digital enterprise, and endless possibilities.

“For decades, our identity was built on coal, a resource that powered Nigeria’s industrial rise. But today, we stand in a different kind of power—the power of knowledge, innovation, and technology,” he stated.

Also at the event were the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande; Speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu; former Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Barth Nnaji; Chairman of Zinox Technical, Leo Stan Ejeh; and the Group Managing Director, Afrinvest, Dr. Ike Chioke, among a host of others.
