If you don’t know who you are, the world will tell you who to be.

That’s the story of too many young Africans today—brilliant, bold, and full of potential, but pulled in every direction by a modern world that rarely reflects their roots. In trying to keep up, many forget where they’re coming from. And without that anchor, we lose our essence.

Sankofa was born from this ache.
The ache of watching culture fade, the ache of not seeing ourselves in the stories we’re told, the ache of potential that’s powerful—but rootless.

We believe that how far you go in life is tied to how deeply you know who you are. And that knowing starts with looking back—not in regret, but in remembrance.

My 2024 Logofolio

As 2024 comes to an end, I’m beyond excited to share my logofolio—a collection of projects that represents not just designs but also stories, challenges, and immense growth. Each logo is a reflection of collaboration, creativity, and the trust my clients placed in me to visually bring their brands to life.

This year, I had the privilege of working with incredible brands from diverse industries—each project unique, challenging, and deeply rewarding. I learned, redefined strategies, and discovered new perspectives on design and branding, which have shaped the designer I am today.

To every client, peer, and mentor who trusted and supported me—thank you for being part of this journey. Your trust has fueled my passion and pushed me to improve with every project.

To fellow designers and creatives out there: Keep going, stay inspired, and trust the process. Behind every small step is a giant leap waiting to unfold.

As I look forward to 2025, I’m hopeful for new opportunities, creative breakthroughs, and continued collaboration with amazing individuals. Here’s to a year of bold designs, meaningful connections, and even greater impact.

Let’s keep crafting greatness together.

With gratitude and determination...

Throughout this project, I was reminded of an important lesson: the sweet spot for a functional and impactful logo lies at the intersection of client needs, target audience expectations, and designer expertise.

As designers, it’s easy to fall into one of two traps—either prioritizing our creative vision alone or doing exactly what the client wants without offering professional input. In both cases, the result is often less than ideal: either the client rejects the work or the project feels like a transaction rather than a solution to their problem.

What I’ve learned is that good communication and collaboration are non-negotiable for success. Ask questions. Listen closely. Don’t rely solely on your design knowledge or assumptions. Understanding the client’s standpoint and aligning it with your expertise ensures the project solves real problems while maintaining creativity and professionalism.

It’s not always easy, but when both sides come together with trust and clarity, amazing results happen.

Get Your Work Approved Easily

Let’s be honest—most clients we call ā€œhardā€ aren’t really hard. The truth is, we often fail to decode what they’re saying. They might struggle to articulate their vision, and we might not fully grasp their direction. That disconnect can feel like a deadlock, but it’s an opportunity to dive deeper and bridge the gap.

Here’s what works for me:
Start with Understanding the brief, Not Sketching:
Before I even think about design concepts, even after getting and going through the filled brief, I focus on getting close to the client’s story. We get on a call, I ask questions based on the brief. A lot of them. "You said this and that in the brief", is that what you mean? (Don't do guess work when you can ask questions).
Most time this isn’t just about gathering facts—it’s about making the client feel seen and heard. I even give them tasks because people love to feel involved depending on their availability.

One task I’ve found incredibly helpful (shout out to Allen Peters for this) is asking the client to list 15 nouns that describe their brand. While they’re thinking on their side, I make my own list too from the brief I have. Then we compare, streamline, and identify key words that guide the design. It’s collaborative, and it builds trust.

Approach the Concept from Multiple Angles:
Once I have a solid understanding, I explore different creative directions.
Brand Initials: Simplify the brand’s essence into its initials.
Telling a Story: Capture a meaningful narrative or core value visually.
Going Abstract: Create something unexpected yet symbolic.
Typography: Let clean, powerful type do the talking.
This process naturally leads to 3-4 strong logo options or even more, I have done 10 or 12 before but choose to present 3. By the time I present them, the client buy the idea fast because they’ve been part of the process. They feel they created it and own it, simple.

Stick to the Brief, but Be Open to Change
Research can sometimes reveal a better direction. If that happens, I don’t just pivot on my own—I take the client along for the ride. I explain why I think a change is necessary and seek their approval before moving

The journey of bringing this sketch to life was both challenging and rewarding. My goal was to practice crafting typography from scratch. As a newcomer to the field of typography, I reached out to some seasoned designers for guidance. One piece of advice stood out: "Don't be afraid to explore new things." This resonated deeply, revealing that my fear of not doing it right was holding me back. I also checked typography PDFs to gain some knowledge.

Inspired by their word, I turned to Pinterest for inspiration, gathering ideas for a project for Oxyweld, a brand specializing in precision welding using only the power of oxygen. I aimed to craft typography that embodied the essence of the brand.

Immersed in thought, I began sketching. Nine drafts later, frustration took over. I angrily left my desk, defeated, and retired to bed. But then, a spark of inspiration struck: why not create a typeface with both soft and sharp edges? Excited, I jumped out of bed and started anew.

This is the sketch and the final result. Although it's from 2023, it holds a timeless lesson. So I ask you, "What is holding you back? Fear of failure, fear of not getting it right?" The truth is, nobody ever gets it right the first time.

As the saying goes; "Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors." Embrace the journey, learn from every attempt, and remember that every failure is a step towards success. Also share your works
