The do's and don't that need to be observed when answering a phone call. This could be also ascribed as phone call manners. Although the list is not exhaustive but suggestive and should also be instructive.
Firstly these are the do's of phone courtesy
1. Guard the quality of your voice. The quality of your voice and your ability to express yourself clearly and concisely are of utmost importance especially when it has to do with business calls. As the person on the other end cannot see your facial expressions or your features, the impression he receives must depend what he hears.
2. It is good to identify yourself, unless the person you're calling knows you too well or may be your organization. Some may be asked who's this and the next thing you hear is don't you recognize me as though the person is seeing your face. Please identify when you are asked who's on the line, it's just simple and polite, don't conclude the person have your contact. Not everyone must save your contact.
3. Make your conversation with business people as brief as possible. They have other things to attend to.
4. When the number called is not answered quickly at least after two trials, wait at least 10 minutes before calling again. The person may not be available to take your calls at the moment.
5. When you call during business hours, even if it's your friend, it must be on emergency. If you want to talk for a long time, it's best if it's done when off work or after hours.
6. Treat wrong-number calls in a polite tune instead of ill-tempered annoyance.
7. Make short calls on other people's phone. Don't start a family meeting with a borrowed phone, they may be expecting call or someone may want to get in touch with them.
8. It is an established rule that the person who makes the call ends it. If you are called, please allow the caller to end the call except in a situation his gadget has issues and he wants you to end it. Or the conversation has ended and it's taking time to end the call, from there you know probably he may have forgotten to do so. Allow the caller this courtesy. Since this is so little observed it cannot be strictly adhered to.
9. When you make a phone call of any length, it's not wrong to ask if the other person is free to listen or whether to call back at another time.
Adhering to this could help keep your conversation safe and polite.
