Tinubu Doesn’t Need to Campaign in Kogi for 2027 — Yahaya Bello

Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has declared that President Bola Tinubu does not need to campaign in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Saturday at an endorsement rally for President Tinubu and Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo’s second-term bid, Bello assured that there is no opposition in Kogi, expressing confidence in Tinubu’s reelection.

He said, “President Tinubu, you don’t even need to come to Kogi State to campaign in 2027. There is no opposition here. Those making noise have not seen the lion, when the lion roars, they will run with their tails.”

Bello praised Tinubu’s leadership, describing him as the kind of leader “every great nation gravitates towards.” He also commended the President for his contributions to Kogi State in areas such as infrastructure, appointments, and security.

Expressing satisfaction with Governor Ododo’s performance, Bello added that under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kogi State and Nigeria would “get to the promised land.

Tinubu Returns to Abuja After Aqaba Process Security Meeting in Rome

President Bola Tinubu has returned to Abuja after attending the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government-level Meeting held in Rome, Italy.

The development was confirmed in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Saturday.

According to the statement, Tinubu’s trip reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional and global security partnerships, as world leaders gathered in Rome to strengthen cooperation against terrorism and violent extremism, particularly in West Africa.

The high-level session, which took place on October 15 at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, had in attendance King Abdullah II of Jordan, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and the Presidents of Nigeria, Chad, Paraguay, Sierra Leone, and Togo, among others.

Also present were Azouz Nasri, President of Algeria’s Upper House, and delegations from Côte d’Ivoire, Kazakhstan, Mauritania, Senegal, and Uzbekistan.

The statement noted that President Tinubu’s participation aligns with his administration’s security diplomacy agenda and Nigeria’s active role in international peace and counterterrorism efforts.

NYCN Warns Youths Against Joining October 20 ‘Free Nnamdi Kanu’ Protest

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has warned Nigerian youths against participating in the planned Free Nnamdi Kanu protest scheduled for October 20, 2025.

In a statement signed by Barr. Buhari Shehu, Chairman of the NYCN Interim Management Committee, the council expressed concern that the protest could lead to a breakdown of law and order.

Citing a Federal High Court order restraining the organizers and a security advisory from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, NYCN urged youths to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could endanger lives or property.

The council appealed to young Nigerians to prioritize peace and national stability, emphasizing the need to use lawful and peaceful means in making their demands known.

Dangote Refinery Denies Rift with PENGASSAN, Says Worker Dismissals Were Due to Sabotage

The Dangote Refinery has refuted claims by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) that over 800 workers were dismissed due to a union dispute, insisting that only a “small number” of staff were affected.

The company explained that the dismissals were part of a safety and security measure following repeated acts of sabotage that had threatened operations and raised serious safety concerns at the facility.

PENGASSAN had earlier directed its members to embark on a nationwide strike on September 28 in protest against the dismissals. However, the union suspended the strike on October 1 after the Federal Government’s intervention.

Following negotiations, the Dangote Group reportedly agreed to redeploy the affected workers to other subsidiaries within the conglomerate.

Addressing the controversy, Dangote Refinery Executive Director, Devakumar Edwin, denied any conflict between the refinery and the union, describing reports of a rift with PENGASSAN as “false.”

“We have been under repeated attacks,” Edwin said. “First, they said the refinery would never take off; then that it would not be commissioned. Now, they claim there is a crisis with PENGASSAN, which is completely untrue.”

He explained that the internal reorganisation was strictly driven by security concerns and operational efficiency, not union activities.

“We recorded 22 separate sabotage incidents. The restructuring was to protect the refinery from further attacks and ensure smooth operations,” he added.

The Dangote Refinery, located in the Lekki Free Zone, Lagos, is one of Africa’s largest industrial projects and began operations earlier this year, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s drive for energy self-sufficiency.

Senate Moves to Resolve ASUU–FG Crisis as Two-Week Warning Strike Begins

The Senate has stepped in to mediate the ongoing dispute between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government, following the union’s declaration of a two-week warning strike.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, Senator Muntari Dandutse, announced the intervention after a closed-door meeting with ASUU representatives at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, on Friday.

Dandutse acknowledged the “concerns and frustrations” that prompted the strike, assuring that the committee would address the issues raised by ASUU with urgency and seriousness.

The senator emphasized the need for a holistic approach to end the recurring ASUU strikes that have disrupted Nigeria’s academic calendar for decades.

He disclosed that the committee would communicate its resolutions to the Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to initiate negotiations aimed at resolving the dispute.

The committee also resolved to engage the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) over the revocation of land belonging to the University of Abuja, a matter that ASUU has strongly opposed.

Earlier, ASUU President, Professor Christopher Piwuna, confirmed that the union had embarked on a two-week warning strike, citing unresolved issues from previous negotiations.

According to him, the key issues include sustainable funding for tertiary institutions, improved conditions of service, university autonomy, and academic freedom.

He also urged the Senate to intervene in the University of Abuja land dispute and to advocate increased budgetary allocations

U.S. Embassy Issues Security Alert Ahead of Protest in Abuja

The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert to its citizens ahead of a planned protest in the Federal Capital Territory scheduled for Monday, October 20, under the banner .

The demonstration, organized by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, is expected to attract large crowds at Eagle Square and the Central Business District. Sowore, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on October 9, described the march as a “historic” and peaceful protest directed toward the A*o Rock Presidential Villa, aimed at demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a statement released on its website on Friday, the U.S. Embassy warned that the protest could lead to roadblocks, traffic disruptions, and potential confrontations between police and demonstrators that “could turn violent.”

“U.S. citizens are advised to avoid this area and severely limit all movement throughout the city on Monday, October 20,” the statement read.

The Embassy also advised that children in Abuja remain at home and that domestic staff commuting from outside the city should refrain from traveling.

Americans were further urged to avoid protest areas, stay away from large gatherings, and exercise caution if they find themselves unexpectedly near demonstrations.

Highlighting the risk of unrest, the Embassy recommended that citizens review personal security plans and keep mobile phones fully charged in case of emergencies.

The planned protest follows renewed calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in custody since June 2021, after his controversial extradition from Kenya. He is currently facing terrorism-related charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The Embassy also reminded U.S. citizens to monitor local news updates, remain vigilant in public places such as malls, cinemas, and places of worship, and to maintain a low profile during the protest period.
