📌TIPS FOR NURSING SCHOOL CLINICALS (HOSPITAL EXPERIENCE)
⏩Be punctual : Arriving early as a student Nurse or even a practicing Nurse gives you an edge over others, it helps you get used to things around the ward and make you feel more relaxed too.
Missing a report(Handover report) with your nurse will definitely make you feel left out all day and you wouldn't want that.
⏩ Get involved on everything happening in your ward and gather as many experience as possible: active participation will help you get used to the nursing procedures and it will be boost your clinical competence.
Take advantage of the moment and ask questions whenever you can.
Trust me, this is the best time to ask questions and practice skills too.
Note: Some Senior Nurses in your ward may not always tell you to carry out a procedure under their watch but always be willing to volunteer.
⏩ Never carry out any procedure without the supervision of your Chief or a licensed Nurse: No matter how enthusiastic you are about carimg for your patient or carrying out any procedure, it is important to do that under the supervision of a registered Nurse.
⏩ Never carry out any procedure without protecting yourself and your patient (PPE) : Wearing of face masks, hand gloves should be a routine especially when dealing with bodily fluids and when caring for your patients.
⏩ Hand hygiene should be a routine too, before and after each procedure.
⏩ Document any procedure carried out and report to your superior.
⏩ communicate: One of the qualities of a good Nurse is communication, so as a student nurse, communicating with Nurses in your ward and patients too will help you understand what to do, when to do it and why you are doing it and it helps in continuity of care.
⏩ Introducing yourself to your patients before any procedures helps to promote rapport and reduce anxiety.
⏩ Get familiar with the ward and with the supply room during clinicals.
⏩ Get familiar with your patient's name, their diagnosis and their course of treatment.
⏩ Finally, learn to be assertive when defending yourself and please do not d1e before your patient because if you do, who will take care of them? You get the point now?
⏩ Protect yourself as you also protect your patient.
