CHIEF UCHE GEOFFREY NNAJI PLEADS NOT GUILTY, REAFFIRMS CONFIDENCE IN THE RULE OF LAW

Abuja, Nigeria | July 13, 2026

Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, today appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja where he was formally arraigned on a six-count charge brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

At the arraignment, Chief Nnaji pleaded not guilty to all six counts, unequivocally maintaining his innocence and indicating his readiness to defend himself through the judicial process.

Following submissions by counsel, the Honourable Court admitted Chief Nnaji to bail on conditions set by the Court and adjourned the matter until 21 September 2026 for the commencement of trial.

Chief Nnaji welcomes the opportunity to have his day in court.

From the outset, he has maintained that the proper place to determine these allegations is before a court of law—not in the media or the court of public opinion. He remains fully committed to the judicial process and has every confidence that the facts and evidence will ultimately vindicate him.

It is important to emphasize that today’s proceedings were only an arraignment. Under Section 36 (5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, every person charged with an offence is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. An arraignment is not a conviction, nor should the filing of allegations be mistaken for proof of wrongdoing.

Chief Nnaji has lived a life of public service spanning several decades. Throughout that period, he has built a reputation founded on integrity, hard work and service to Nigeria. He considers his name and reputation to be among his most valuable assets—not only because they belong to him, but because they are shared by his family, his children, generations before him, and generations yet unborn.

For that reason, he is determined to vigorously defend his integrity and clear his name through the legal process.

Chief Nnaji also expresses profound appreciation to the countless Nigerians, friends, associates, political leaders, supporters and well-wishers from across the country and beyond who have continued to stand by him, pray for him and express confidence in his integrity throughout this period.

He respectfully urges the public to allow the judicial process to run its full course and to refrain from drawing conclusions based solely on allegations that are yet to be tested in court.

Chief Nnaji remains steadfast in his belief that justice is best served through due process, fairness and respect for the rule of law. He will continue to cooperate fully with the Court and is confident that, at the conclusion of these proceedings, the truth will prevail.

The gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State and former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, has sent a high-powered delegation to visit and commiserate with electorates who were victims of the violent attacks that occurred during the recently concluded Enugu North Senatorial District By-Election.

Speaking through members of the delegation during visits to several victims who sustained varying degrees of injuries as a result of the alleged physical assaults, Chief Nnaji expressed deep shock and disappointment over the level to which politics in Enugu State has allegedly deteriorated.

According to him, he is dumbfounded and appalled that political competition in the state has descended to what he described as a shameful level of barbarism, intimidation and violence against innocent citizens whose only offence was exercising their democratic right to participate in the electoral process.

Chief Nnaji stated that the widespread reports of intimidation, harassment and attacks on voters have raised serious concerns about the state of democracy in Enugu State. He argued that a government that genuinely enjoys the confidence and support of the people would have no reason to resort to force, intimidation or the deployment of political thugs to influence the outcome of an election.

He further questioned the necessity of the massive mobilisation of political office holders, local government officials and other individuals into the Enugu North Senatorial Zone on the eve of the election if, indeed, the ruling party enjoyed the overwhelming support that it publicly claims.

“If all the endorsements and public declarations of support truly reflected the wishes of the people, why was there a need for such an unprecedented deployment of political machinery and individuals into the zone a day before the election? Why were voters allegedly intimidated and prevented from freely expressing their democratic choices?” he asked.

Chief Nnaji maintained that democracy can only thrive where the will of the people is respected and where citizens are allowed to vote freely without fear of violence, intimidation or coercion.

He assured the victims and their families that they would not be abandoned in their moment of distress. He pledged his continued support and solidarity, emphasising that he would always stand with those who have remained loyal to the ideals of democracy, justice and good governance.

“I want every victim and every family affected by these unfortunate incidents to know that they are not alone. I will continue to stand with them through thick and thin. Many residents of Enugu State are becoming increasingly concerned about the direction of governance in our dear state. While every administration comes into office with promises of development, accountability, and improved welfare for the people, many citizens feel that some of these promises have yet to be fully realized.

One issue that continues to generate public debate is the state's tax policy. Small business owners, traders, artisans, and ordinary workers often complain about the growing burden of taxes and levies. At a time when families are struggling with the rising cost of living, government policies should provide relief and create opportunities for economic growth rather than add to the hardships of the people.

Beyond taxation, many residents expected faster progress in critical areas such as infrastructure, job creation, youth empowerment, and rural development. While some efforts may have been made, many citizens believe that much more remains to be done to meet the expectations that accompanied the current administration.

As Enugu looks toward the future, there is a growing need for leadership that combines competence, experience, accessibility, and a genuine commitment to the welfare of the people. If an anti-graft agency were genuinely looking for him, they would not need to look far. The fact that he is moving freely and engaging with national media completely rubbishes the dramatic claims of a desperate search.

Premium Times has increasingly shown itself to be a media outlet heavily sympathetic to the political interests of the current Enugu State administration under Governor Peter Mbah. The general public is therefore hereby urged to completely disregard this false information. It is nothing more than malicious propaganda emanating from a camp terrified of Chief Nnaji’s political trajectory.

Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji remains a law-abiding citizen, a dedicated statesman, and a leader fully committed to the liberation and progress of Enugu State and Nigeria.
No amount of media blackmail will alter that reality that Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji is the most preferred candidate for Enugu state governorship position for 2027.
