Colombian winger Luis Díaz has officially left Liverpool to join Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in a deal worth £65.5 million, marking the end of his memorable three-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield.

Díaz, 28, signed a four-year contract with the German champions, describing his time in Liverpool as a “fulfilled duty” in a heartfelt message following the transfer. The move comes after growing speculation over his future, which saw him left out of Liverpool’s pre-season clash against AC Milan on Saturday.

Liverpool had initially turned down Bayern’s first offer of £58.6 million earlier this month, but later accepted the improved bid over the weekend. The agreement paved the way for Díaz to undergo a medical and finalise the switch.

Signed from FC Porto in January 2022 for an initial £37 million, Díaz made 148 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 41 goals. During his time under Jürgen Klopp, he played a key role in helping the Reds secure multiple trophies and earned admiration for his pace, creativity, and tireless work ethic.

His departure marks the latest chapter in Bayern’s summer rebuild, while for Liverpool, it signals the end of an era for one of their standout wide players.

The African Development Bank (AFDB) has disbursed $500 million (₦766.7 billion) to support Nigeria’s power sector under its $1 billion Economic Governance and Energy Transition Support Programme.

AFDB’s Nigeria Country Director, Dr. Abdul Kamara, revealed this at the launch of a feasibility study for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), organised by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), saying it will back the next phase of electricity reforms aimed at delivering reliable power to millions without access.

Kamara noted that while Africa has 60% of the world’s solar potential, it holds just 2% of storage capacity—an urgent gap and opportunity. He cited South Africa and Kenya as models Nigeria can now follow, supported by a $1 million grant from AFDB to help implement the Electricity Act and build state-level power markets.

TCN MD, Engr. Dr. Sule Abdulaziz, called the BESS study timely, saying it would address technical and operational needs for implementation.

The federal government has raised concerns over the rising threat charcoal production poses to Nigeria’s forests, urging immediate action to protect the environment.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja, Dr. Aishetu Ndayako, Permanent Secretary of the Ecological Project Office, warned that unregulated charcoal activities are fuelling deforestation and biodiversity loss.

“Trees are being cut down without efforts to replace them,” she said, calling for stronger regulation and a nationwide shift to cleaner energy options like LPG and solar cookstoves.

The dialogue, organised by the Centre for Renewable Energy and Action on Climate Change (CREACC-NG), highlighted Nigeria’s ranking as Africa’s top charcoal producer—losing an estimated 1.5 million trees daily.

CREACC-NG’s Executive Director, Usman Muhammad, said the event marked a joint step toward more sustainable practices.

Also speaking, Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, stressed the need for environmental education in schools and urged support for training charcoal producers on eco-friendly methods.

The Kwara State Government has removed 94 street beggars from key areas in Ilorin, including Geri Alimi, Tanke Junction, and Zango, as part of efforts to curb street begging. The group includes 43 women and 51 men.

Commissioner for Social Welfare, Dr Mariam Nnafatima Imam, led the operation alongside correctional officers and the governor’s aide on drug abuse, Haliru Olamilekan Mikail.

Dr Imam said the state will prosecute offenders and repatriate them after profiling, adding that similar exercises have been done in the past. She urged residents to stop giving alms to beggars, advising donations to verified centres instead.

Mikail noted that some beggars pose security risks, including acting as informants or being used for drug-related activities.

The Correctional Service confirmed it will assign community service to those not facing criminal charges, in line with the Correctional Act 2019.

The Senate Committee on Public Accounts has given the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) three weeks to respond to audit queries over N210 trillion in unaccounted funds from 2017 to 2023.

The directive was issued to Group Chief Executive Officer Engr. Bayo Ojulari, who appeared before the committee on Tuesday after missing earlier invitations. He apologised and requested more time to review the 19 audit queries, saying he has been in office for only about 100 days.

Ojulari said he needed time to understand the issues, consult external auditors, and reconcile records. Though he asked for four weeks, the committee granted three.

Committee chairman Senator Ahmed Wadada clarified that the N210 trillion includes N103 trillion in liabilities and N107 trillion in assets, not missing funds.

“We’re not saying the money is stolen,” he said. “We’re simply reviewing the audit report as part of our oversight duty.”

NNPCL is expected to submit written responses before appearing again with top management.

The United Kingdom has said it will formally recognise Palestine as an independent state in September, unless Israel meets a set of specific conditions before then.

The announcement was made by British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer following an emergency cabinet meeting on the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This came shortly after he held talks with US President Donald Trump.

Sir Keir stated that the UK will move forward with the recognition ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in September unless Israel takes clear steps towards peace. These include a ceasefire and tangible efforts to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

This development follows a similar announcement by French President Emmanuel Macron last week, who confirmed that France would recognise a Palestinian state in September, becoming the first G7 country to do so.

Ireland, Spain, and Norway had already recognised Palestine as a state in 2023.

Reacting to the UK’s position, Israel’s foreign ministry rejected the move, accusing the British government of acting under internal political pressure and aligning with France.

In a statement, the ministry said, “The change in the UK’s stance at this moment rewards Hamas and undermines the push for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.”

Over 25,000 nurses and midwives in federal health institutions across Nigeria have begun a seven-day warning strike over poor welfare and working conditions.

The strike, led by the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), affects 74 federal hospitals and all public healthcare centres nationwide. Private hospitals are not involved.

NANNM-FHI Chairman, Morakinyo Rilwan, said the strike follows a 15-day ultimatum ignored by the federal government. He described the action as a total shutdown, with no services—including emergencies—available.

Key demands include better pay, recruitment of more nurses, implementation of an existing court ruling, and inclusion in policy-making roles.

Rilwan noted that this is the first solo nurses’ strike in over 40 years. If the government fails to respond after this warning strike, a full indefinite strike may follow.
