President Muhammadu Buhari’s government has awarded Government Ekpemupolo, better known as Tompolo, a pipeline surveillance contract.

The former militant leader was the Commander of the defunct Movement for Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND).

The deal is described as a renewal as Tompolo got a similar deal during the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

The government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited agreed to engage Tompolo to end illegal bunkering, illegal refining and oil theft in Niger-Delta communities.

It is a reversal of the initial stance which saw the cancellation of the contract months after President Buhari assumed office.

A source close to Tompolo told said that the current deal is worth over N4billion monthly.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Thursday said it would not call off its strike until the salary arrears of its members were paid.

The university lecturers also said they would not teach students to make up for the six months they had been on strike if the Federal Government failed to pay for the “period of strike.”

The union’s national president, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, disclosed this in response to a statement credited to the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, that the Federal Government would not concede to ASUU’s demands for the backlog of salaries withheld within the period.

Constructive Media reports that ASUU embarked on a one-month warning strike on February 14. However, the union has extended the strike several times in the past six months.

Other associations such as the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Educational Institutions and National Association of Academic Technologists later followed suit, shutting down public universities nationwide.

Adamu had told State House correspondents on Thursday that the government would not pay the lecturers for the period of strike.

But reacting to the government’s position, Osodeke said, “He is joking. If they fail to pay, we will not teach those students; we won’t make up for that period. We will start a new session (2022/2023). We won’t conduct examinations; we will start a fresh session totally.

APC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE BOLA TINUBU VISIT EX-PRESIDENT OBJ.

Scores of supporters of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State, Wednesday, stormed the residence of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, in Abeokuta as the presidential candidate of the APC, Bola Tinubu visited the former President.

Tinubu arrived at the Penthouse of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Oke- Mosan, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, in his chopper at about 1:09pm in company of some party leaders.

He was received by Governor Dapo Abiodun, former Governor Gbenga Daniel, his predecessor, Segun Osoba, and other Ogun State government functionaries.

They have all gone into a meeting with the ex-president.

The meeting was believed to be in connection with ambition of Tinubu in the coming elections.

The duo had not been seen together since 2015 when he escorted the then APC candidate, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to Obasanjo’s residence.

He was also at the 78th birthday of the former President held at Abeokuta in March, 2015.

The two of them have since kept their distances as Obasanjo withdrew his support for Buhari and the APC, which he supported to power by tearing his card as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.

JIGAWA STATE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN SCHOOLS OVER SECURITY THREAT.

The Jigawa State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all public and private schools in the state over security threats.

State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Lawan Yunusa Danzomo disclosed this to newsmen in his office.

Danzomo explained that the directive is not peculiar to Jigawa State but all the states, especially the border states.

Constructive Media learnt that the state government had directed the immediate closure of all primary and secondary schools without further delay while the students were taking their terminal examinations.

The sudden closure has caused panicking among residents, students and teachers.

A headmaster confided that they were asked to shut down the schools and release the students immediately.

He said the directive came while the students are writing their examinations a few days before the normal closing date.

Constructive Media had also observed that most of the students, especially boarding schools were left stranded after closure of the schools.

Police spokesperson in Jigawa, Lawan Shiisu Adam, said the police command in the state did not order the closure of the schools, and the Ministry of Education has not briefed the command on what led to the sudden closure.

WOMEN CHARGED TO REPORT WHEN ABUSED.

Nigerian women have been urged to seek available help while facing domestic violence before it claims their lives.

This was the view of some women in Abia state while reacting to the alleged killing of one Mrs Chidimma Gloria Ibeh, in Suleja, Niger State last week by her husband, Mr Adeniji Jose, who has also died after reportedly consuming a poisonous substance.

One of the respondents, Mrs Amarachi Chijioke, said many women remained in abusive homes with the hope that things would work out with their spouses.

She however said that if the abuse was intensifying, it was best to seek for help rather than staying and ending up dead.

On her part, Mrs Josephine Okezie, stressed the need for intending couples to be sure they can cope with each others character when they settle down to avoid problems of jealousy, suspicion, infidelity, violence and untimely death.

Miss Charity Ekeoma in her contribution, lamented that domestic violence had become a global problem and was impacting negatively on the physical and mental well being of the victims.

She urged the victims to speak out as soon as it starts, take appropriate steps to save themselves and not be afraid to start all over.
