How many of us noticed how Tyler Perry, in Straw, revealed that our phones are now more powerful than the Television and Radio Stations?
Most people didn’t pick it. So I decided to bring it to our notice.
It happened at the peak of the film. When Janiya (Taraji) held everyone in the bank hostage, the police arrived, and right behind them, the TV crews with their big cameras set up to go live from outside the bank.
But how far could they cover? I will reveal this later.
We saw that at one point a bank staff quietly placed her phone in position and hit “go live.” And while answering a call, Janiya unknowingly walked into the frame… and that was when the magic began. She began to speak, to tell her story. To pour it all out.
That moment? It hit deep. That was when you and I cried our hearts out. Because it felt real like we were watching our usual live-streaming on Social Media, and we are watching Janiya live sharing her sorrowful experiences.
And as the people trooped into the streets, screaming “Free Janiya!”, we could relate, because it is what we would have done after listening to the emotional testimony.
Tyler didn’t just give us a dramatic scene. He showed us a media shift.
A single mobile phone did what a whole TV station couldn’t do. No light, no microphone, no permission. Just one click — and millions connected.
That’s how powerful that phone in your hand is.
Think about it.
