"Precious I just want to start a writing career now. Should I open a new account?"

I've received this message a good number of times. It's finally time to make this post.

Before I became serious with my writing career on Facebook, I had more than 3000 friends and they majorly consisted of my secondary school mates, church members, and other random people that I wanted to socialize with. There were still scattered tags all over my profile.

When I eventually became serious, I set my profile in such a way that all tags were reviewed before appearing on my timeline. I also worked on my Facebook name and biography. (Take note of these things.)

I consistently posted on my page and went ahead to publish my first book -- a fiction novel titled "Behind The Veil." However, it was very difficult to get sales from my page. Most of my audience still consisted of my loved ones who were probably taken aback by the steps I was taking.

A few people bought that book and that was it. After then, I authored other books and the amount of people that got them was terribly low. I knew I had to unfriend people that were not my target audience, so I started --- but the job was terribly tasking for me. Remember I said, I had over 3000 of such people.

I decided to open a new Facebook account because of this reason plus other important ones. And guess what? After a while of posting consistently here too, I was able to gather the right audience, generate close to 400 leads and close up to 55 sales for my first ever paid training.

On this new account, I've had a lot of people ask about my services that I had to buy a course of 7500 naira --- to learn HOW NOT to lose such people. They're called prospects, by the way.

She comes online to advertise her goods but no one is asking her about them, let alone buying them from her. Now, Amaka doesn't know what to do.

She hears about a concept called "lead generation". She eventually learns that this involves "USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO GET PEOPLE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN HER PRODUCTS". Then she tries all her best to get those people.

She joins the crowd by posting a train of pictures, showcasing her products – not knowing that many scammers do the same thing and customers are tired of such boring posts. She still doesn't get any customers – or let's say she gets just one in a week.

This morning, I tried downloading a particular song online. The FIRST site was frustrating because ads kept on hindering the network. I immediately abandoned it and went to check another website -- apparently the SECOND. Guess what? It had fewer ads, so I downloaded it faster than usual, and I ended up SATISFIED.

I DON'T HAVE TIME!

When I was resuming school after the 8 months strike, I got scared about how I was going to balance my writing career along with my studies. Like most students think, I thought there was no time.

However, I've come to realize that time is an asset, a gift that was given to every single human on earth. You either use it to your advantage or keep making excuses and watch others succeed.

Lately, I've been editing a book. I was slower than usual in editing this book and in my mind, my excuse was "we are currently in examination period." Then I read a short post made by Mmesoma Ilechukwu on productivity. This post opened my eyes to the fact that I was being complacent. I was actually "chilling" in the comfort zone, and making real but flimsy excuses to make myself feel better.

So with this new realization, I did something different. Instead of going through the usual routine of watching a movie while eating; I continued editing. Yeah. I ate and edited together. It was quite easier than I thought.

That same day, I had an exam. Now, after the exam, instead of going back to the hostel and relaxing on my bed, I stopped at an open space where people relax and CONTINUED EDITING!

Guess what? I spent more than two hours sitting alone and I achieved so much! In fact, it wasn't a surprise how I finished editing the book that day. P.S. It was close to 100 pages.

Dear content writer,

You might be a student but you have time. Check. You're making excuses again. Your mind is tricking you to procrastinate. You can write that content today. You can write that book.

THE R-FACTOR IS TERRIBLY EASIER THAN YOU THINK!

The reason you feel like you're writing "thrash" might be because you are underestimating the R-factor: RESEARCH!

Priscilla and Amaka once got the same gig as content writers. Priscilla's content was rejected. Amaka's was accepted and she kept on getting more gigs from the same brand. Priscilla eventually fell into depression, praying against her VILLAGE PEOPLE once again.

There was a time I sent content samples to a travel guide that had reached out to me on Facebook. Before I created those samples, I researched by performing these simple acts.

πŸ”Ί I typed in the hashtag "travel guide" on both Facebook and Instagram and I carefully examined the kind of contents his competitors were posting. I studied how they built the KLT factor and how they introduced their services to their audience. I didn't study one or two or even three. They were A LOT! Matter of fact, the Facebook algorithm thought I was so interested in traveling that it started flooding my feed with related topics.πŸ˜… Little did it know, I was just making a research.

πŸ”Ί Now, studying the competitors gave me a clue about the kind of target audience I was dealing with. The big guys in the game had different people saying "I'm interested" and all in their comment sections. That gave me the full opportunity to s.ta.lk such commenters. The point of stalking them was to understand my audience. It got easier to walk in their shoes; carefully scrutinizing how they think, talk and act. This is one of the most effective keys to writing a superb content. THINK LIKE YOUR AUDIENCE.


πŸ”Ί Finally, I generated content ideas from CHATGPT. I got a list of topics to work on but I needed just two, so I picked the most captivating. Now, I went to Google and typed in the exact topic I was supposed to work on.

Of courses, I saw a lot of websites doing justice to that. I carefully studied, jotting important points and expanding my knowledge on the niche I was supposed to work on.

After that, I applied my creative juice to the game and wrote those samples beautifully! I didn't have adequate knowledge on the niche beforehand, but a passerby reading would think otherwise.

ARE YOU ALSO WRITING IN CHAINS?

I'll tell you a story. At some point, I was terribly losing sales. I had the gigs but lacked the skills to close sales. I decided to watch videos on YouTube that could help me boost my sales.

The first time I tried out a strategy I had learnt on YouTube, I literally wrote the exact words that the tutor had used. I was a little scared when I got on the call with the prospect. (I normally don't like calls even with those I'm familiar with.) Then we started the conversation. I read out what I had written down and guess what? Things went the opposite way.

The prospect even got a little offended and I had to apologize. At the end of everything, I lost that sale. Now that I think about it; I was at fault for using the exact words I had learnt without taking time to CREATIVELY TWEAK.

Why The Heck Does This Story Matter To You As A (Budding) Writer?

Writing is a skill that has a lot to do with creativity. You can only achieve an excellent write up when you write with a FREE mind. But most times, you unconsciously CHAIN yourself to certain rules or formulas.

When you follow a guide point blank, you unconsciously dilute your creative juice and most times, the results end up average. In fact, the experts in the game would probably deduce that you followed a guide.

Here is my advice to you.

Acknowledge guides that help you be a better writer but understand the place of freedom you have. Understand your independence as a writer and make sure to prioritize it. Don't be lazy to STRETCH and UTILIZE your ability to think for yourself.

DON'T BE LAZY TO STRETCH AND UTILIZE YOUR ABILITY TO THINK FOR YOURSELF!

In the long run, it matters more.

I chatted at length with a person who reached out to me because he needed a coach on content writing. Along the line, I got to know that he just started learning a different digital skill. I quickly advised him to focus on that one before trying to learn content writing.

Most of the time, the reason we don't succeed online is that we're doing too many things simultaneously. Don't get me wrong. It is incredibly helpful to place your eggs in different baskets. However, the best way to diversify is to start with one and be good with it. Focus on growing whatever skill you've chosen first.
