Electricity Consumers Protest In Osogbo, Allege IBEDC of Fraud in Meters, Billing
Nigerians have cried out that the federal government may not achieve its drive for a stable power supply without regulating the excesses of Ibadan electricity distribution company, IBEDC and other disco operators.
Protesters stormed the streets of Osogbo to lament untold hardships and exploitation by the Ibadan electricity distribution company.
The protesters decried undue delay in account opening, unused charges for new consumers and hardship in the procurement of meters.
According to them, IBEDC has failed to supply meters ordered by customers in 2015, 2016 and 2017 while cards submitted by consumers applying for upgrades have not been returned.
Led by the licensed electrical contractor association of Nigeria, LECAN, they demand a major reform in the activities of the disco operator in a bid to achieve 24 hours power supply.
Osun state LECAN chairman, Kayode Adebayo claimed the excesses of the company may not be unconnected with the reason some people bypass the electricity.
Some customers who spoke with newsmen lamented how they were charged huge amounts even before the installation of electricity and how they were asked to pay for new meters when the one being used developed a fault.
The protesters who threatened to stage bigger protests if their demands are not met also faulted the operation of the banding system in the electricity sector.
Kikelomo Owoeye is the IBEDC communication and branding officer, she denied the allegation stressing that the company has maintained a seamless disbursement of meters to all subscribers.
She appealed to all customers to make formal complaints of any observations to the office for prompt remedial actions.
