Hushpuppi's associate, Mr Woodberry sentenced to eight years in prison by U.S court

Jacob Olalekan Ponle popularly known as Mr Woodberry has been sentenced to eight years and three months in prison for coordinating a multimillion-dollar fraud.

Mr Woodberry who is a known associate of imprisoned Nigerian fraudster, Hushpuppi, was sentenced on July 11 by Judge Robert Gettleman of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago, after being convicted on one count of fraud.

It was also learnt that seven other counts were dismissed following a plea bargain in April. The convict is now expected to surrender to U.S. Marshal Service for onward transfer to the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, where his family members, especially his American fiancée, would be allowed to visit him.

Mr Woodberry who will be deported after serving out his prison sentence, will pay seven victims about $8 million in restitution. The court discovered that he has the capacity to make the full payment but waived all interests on the restitution value.

Prosecutors who discovered that he had 152 bitcoins, had sought for the court's permission to sell it off. A 30-day notice was issued to the public for anyone with interest in the assets to file claims, but no one with legitimate interest turned up at the time of Mr Woodberry’s sentencing.

He is expected to forfeit items in the Dubai police custody, such as one Rolls Royce, Lamborghini Urus, Mercedes-Benz G-Class AMG G55, four Rolex watches, one Patek Philippe watch, and three Audemars Piguet watches.

Mr Woodberry will also forfeit three gold and diamond-studded rings, five gold bracelets and two gold bracelet keys, six gold neck chains, one gold and diamond-studded necklace, one small gold nugget, two bank cards, about $1,835 in Emirati dirhams, and approximately $15.45 in South African rands.

NYSC Rejects UI, UNN Graduates From Orientation Camps

Graduates of the University of Ibadan and University of Nigeria Nsukka have been disallowed from participating in the Batch C orientation camp of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) due to the failure of their schools to comply with NYSC directives.

Joy (not real name) told FIJ she could not wait to be at her orientation camp in Abia State after printing her NYSC call-up letter. She embarked on her journey to her state of deployment on November 1, 2022.

The journey was stressful, but she was thankful to God that she arrived safely. Already, the terror on Nigerians on the roads these days is enough to discourage anyone from embarking on that journey.

But to her dismay, on arriving at the camp, she met a situation she never envisaged. The camp management branded all of them from the University of Ibadan as ineligible to participate in the orientation programme.

“The day I printed by call-up letter, I was excited. I was asked to report to the camp on November 3. I left home with joy, even though the insecurity on our roads recently is scary,” she said.

“Despite the level of insecurity in the country, I spent two days on the road; there were multiple stops at checkpoints. Now, they are telling us we cannot register.”

Speaking with FIJ, another PCM from the University of Ibadan who craved anonymity, said the news from the camp authorities had dampened his spirit and he could not believe that after traveling down to Cross River from Ibadan, he was denied the opportunity to participate in the ongoing Batch C orientation course.

“It is frustrating that as at now, I have not been cleared to participate in the orientation course here in Cross River State,” he told FIJ.

In the same regard, FIJ also spoke with PCMs who travelled from Lagos, Ogbomoso and Port-Harcourt. They expressed their unhappiness that after travelling from different locations to their various camps expecting to the registered, they were told about an unresolved problem.

“I cannot adequately express the frustration we are facing here. We knew nothing about the arrangement between our schools and the NYSC. All we know is that we were duly mobilised by NYSC through our various call-up letters.

One of the PCM’s call-up letters obtained by FIJ
“As far as I know, all of us here have perfected our documentations and our credentials are fine. It is, therefore, surprising to know that we are being advised to go back to our schools to fix the problem we did not create,” another PCM narrated to FIJ.

Abeeb, another PCM, is confused about what to do. He told FIJ that he’s from Osun State, posted to Akwa Ibom and considering the distance, he doesn’t know which option to explore at the moment.

“I came to Akwa Ibom State from Osun State and I never imagined I would face this situation. Sincerely speaking, I don’t know what to do. I hope they will have mercy on us and allow us register,” he told FIJ.

THE NEWS THAT DAMPENED PCMS’ SPIRIT

According to the PCMs who spoke with FIJ, their respective camp managements informed them that their rejection at the camps was caused by their different institutions.

“We were told that our schools are responsible for why we are stuck at the camp,” said one, who asked not to be named.

“The camp official who addressed us said there are some errors on our data from our schools which do correspond with the information on NYSC database.

“They said the instruction NYSC gave all the schools since January 2022 was that they should change the format of graduation date to DD/MM/YYY from MM/YYY.

“In the case of UI, they failed to comply during Batch A, Streams 1 and 2. But their students were permitted to register after the school apologised and promised to comply later.

“Batch B mobilization came and UI still enjoyed a pardon for their students without following the NYSC instruction.

“Owing to their consistent failure to comply with instruction, all of us in Batch C are now the ones suffering from their neglect. The NYSC has insisted that we won’t be attended until UI complies.”

Hush the big puppy goes to jail!

The United States District Court sitting at the Central District of California on Monday sentenced convicted fraudster, Ramon Abbas, aka Hushpupi, to 11 years and three months’ imprisonment after he was found guilty of laundering proceeds of a school financing scam, business email compromise and other fraudulent cyber schemes.

The United States Department of Justice, in a statement on Tuesday, said the Instagram celebrity was also ordered by a federal judge to pay $1.7m in restitution to two fraud victims.
The judgment, which was delivered by Justice Otis Wright II, put an end to Hushpuppi’s trial that started after his arrest in June 2020 in his Dubai, United Arab Emirates hotel apartment.
The Assistant Director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Office, Don Alway, in the statement, described Hushpuppi as “one of the most prolific money launderers in the world.”

Hushpuppi was extradited to the United States on July 3.
He was arrested for defrauding over 1.9 million people, majority of whom were Americans.
He also pleaded guilty to the charges filed against him.

An online news platform, Premium Times, reported that Hushpuppi’s wife, Regina Manneh, and two Imams, wrote separately from Lagos and Borno states to the US district court to beg for leniency.
According to the platform, the letter by the Imam of Imisi-Oluwa Mosque, Lagos, Rasaq Olopede, described Hushpuppi as “a frequent donator” to the mosque

*
In another letter, Hudu Abdulrasak of Madrasatul Ahlul-Bait Islamiya, Maiduguri, Borno State, also paid tributes to Hushpuppi for his philanthropic gestures to orphans and widows.

The letters were filed at the US District Court on November 4 in support of the convict’s earlier plea for light sentence.
Our correspondent learnt that Hushpuppi was still being held in the Metropolitan Detention Centre, from where he would be moved to a federal prison.

The Director of Media Relations, United States Attorney’s Office, Thom Mrozek, while responding to an email from our correspondent on Tuesday, said, “He probably has not been transferred to a prison yet. He will serve his sentence in a federal prison somewhere in the United States. The specific facility will be determined by the U. S. Bureau of Prisons, which administers those facilities and has the exclusive authority to determine where a prisoner will be housed.”

The death of a child is unnatural

Ifeanyi Adeleke, the 3 year old son of Music star, Davido and his fiancee, Chioma Rowland has sadly died.

The tragic death occured on Monday, October 31.

Ifeanyi died by drowning at his dad's Banana Island home. He was rushed to Evercare Hospital in Lekki where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The couple had traveled for a family gathering to Ibadan yesterday and had left Ifeanyi with his minders who can't explain how he entered the pool without being noticed and drowned.

We gathered that some of the people at Davido's House when the incident happened have been arrested.

A distraught and inconsolable Davido was removed from Evercare Hospital and taken to his father's house where he remains as at press time.

Quite a number of Davido's industry friends are at the hospital this night.

This is so sad. May God give Davido and Chioma the fortitude to bear this deep loss.
