Over 100 De@d as Air India Plane with 242 on Board Cr@shes Near Ahmedabad Shortly After Takeoff
An Air India flight bound for London’s Gatwick Airport cr@shed minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday, k+lling more than 100 people in one of India’s de@dliest aviation dis@sters.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 people—including 217 adults, 11 children, and two infants—plummeted into a residential area near the airport, striking the doctors’ hostel of B.J. Medical College. Many of the victims were medical students, according to CNN News-18.
The plane had issued a “Mayday” distress call shortly after departing at 1:39 p.m. local time from runway 23, but lost contact soon after, air traffic control confirmed. Eyewitness footage captured the moment a fireball erupted from the crash site, followed by thick black smoke rising above the neighborhood.
Authorities reported over 100 ch@rred bodies recovered and brought to the local government hospital. The wreckage, including the aircraft’s tail, was found embedded in the top of the hostel building. Police say 70–80% of the area has been cleared, with rescue operations ongoing.
The passengers included 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese citizens, and one Canadian. Aviation analyst Anthony Brickhouse noted that video footage showed the aircraft with landing gear down during a phase when it would normally be retracted, raising questions about the emergency’s nature.
The cause of the cr@sh is under investigation.
