Aside from abstaining from food and drink from dawn to dusk, there is a lot more to do and avoid during the holy month of Ramadan. Here are 5 do’s and don’ts of the holy month:

1. Recite Quran

Ramadan is a time to communicate with God. Ramadan, the month in which the holy book was revealed to Prophet Muhammad, is the time to recite the Holy Quran as many times as possible. It is also one of the many things to do to gain rewards during the holy month.

2. Follow the Sunnah

It is important that the Prophet’s (PBUH) Sunnah be followed in order to reap the benefits of the holy month. The Prophet’s (PBUH) routine during this month must be a model for all Muslims. This includes avoiding all the things the religion forbids and doing more of what it allows.

3. Perform Taraweeh and some non-obligatory prayers

In addition to the five daily prayers, another important aspect of Ramadan is the performance of the Taraweeh prayer.

Taraweeh prayers are to be performed daily after Isha in order to strengthen one’s bond with the Almighty and gain God’s blessings. Nafl or non-obligatory can also be performed for extra virtue.

4. Avoid being irritable and impatient

It is critical not to lose patience with other people. It’s no surprise that a lack of food and water can make one irritable and vulnerable, which is why staying calm is essential.

Don’t yell, fight, or engage in any destructive behaviour during Ramadan because the month of Ramadan is all about patience and tolerance.

5. Forgive everyone

Since Ramadan is a month of forgiveness, it is important to forgive anyone and everyone while also asking the almighty for forgiveness.

6. Avoid fornication

Fornication is the act of having s*x between two people who are not legally married. Islam, like any other religion, forbids fornication. Fornicating during Ramadan or while fasting is even more damaging to your relationship with Allah than on other days. As a result, avoid it at all costs.

7. Avoid gossip

people’s problems and lives. It’s also not gender specific. Men and women both gossip. Gossiping is one more thing you must be cautious of, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

The cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has skyrocketed by 38% on a month-on-month basis, reaching ₦16,250 for a 12.5kg cylinder compared to ₦11,735.72 in January 2024.

This surge in prices is accompanied by a 37% increase in the price of 1kg of gas, which rose to ₦1,300 from ₦950 during the same period, according to the latest report from the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Liquefied Petroleum Price Watch for January 2024.

According to the report, there was a 3.55% month-on-month increase in the average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas, reaching ₦5,139.25 compared to ₦4,952.87 in December 2023.

On a year-on-year basis, the 5kg cylinder price saw a significant 12% increase, rising to ₦5,139.25 in January 2024 from ₦4,588.75 in the corresponding period of 2023.

Nassarawa State recorded the highest average price for refilling a 5kg cooking gas cylinder at ₦5,790.00, followed closely by Jigawa State at ₦5,681.82 and Gombe State at ₦5,660.00.

Conversely, Kaduna State had the lowest price at ₦4,150.00, followed by Ogun and Osun States with ₦4,751.04 and ₦4,763.53, respectively.

Experts have expressed concerns that these soaring gas prices will exacerbate the financial burden on the already stretched citizenry, further intensifying the challenges posed by inflation across Nigeria.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, Monday, inaugurated the 188 megawatts Geometric Power Plant Aba.

The inauguration of the historic project took place 20 years after it was initiated, and nine years after its completion but jinxed following a legal battle with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, which was recently resolved.

He commended the owner of the multi million dollar power project and former Minister for Power, Professor Bart Nnaji for conceptualising the great project, and patiently waiting for its coming on stream.

The Vice President commended the resilience of the former Minister in enduring the years of delays and setbacks to his lofty dream.

He sympathised with him over the frustrations he was put through by some interested party.

“About two weeks ago when I met Professor Nnaji I was curious to ask him how old he was. He told me that he was 67 years, and I was amazed. He looks 80 years. The tears and wears, and frustrations of 20 years have taken a great toll on him. But thank God, we are here to commission this game-changing project.”

The Vice President said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Nigeria are very proud of Professor Nnaji for the uncommon feat.

The Vice President who had earlier inaugurated three roads in Aba, also commended Governor Alex Otti for his gaint strides especially in infrastructural development.

“Today in Aba, I saw testimony to good leadership. I saw the outpouring of emotion and support for Alex Otti. Posterity will be very kind to him”.

Speaking earlier, Professor Nnaji said the project which started 20 years ago, was a child of necessity borne out of the desire of Aba manufacturers to have a stable and affordable electricity.

He said that when the then President of World Bank, Paul Wolfowitz, visited Aba in the company of the then Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, manufacturers in Ariara International market were asked to identify their key challenge, and they said lack of reliable power supply.

” This desire for reliable electricity is what led us to the historic Aba Integrated Power project”.

The famous “Ghana Must Go” bag, carries a dark history far more complex than its nature suggests.

This sturdy, woven plastic bag, usually blue and red, became a representation of a tumultuous chapter in Ghana-Nigeria relations, carrying the weight of mass deportation and xenophobia.

Its name is a reminder of a dark period in West Africa and is etched in the collective memory of Ghanaians and Nigerians alike.

The story begins long before the expulsion. In the 1970s and early 1980s, Ghana struggled with severe economic hardship. Dwindling oil reserves, high inflation, and mounting debt led to a decline in living standards.

Many Ghanaians, seeking better opportunities, migrated to neighbouring Nigeria, which enjoyed a booming economy fueled by its oil wealth.

This influx, estimated at over two million people by the early 1980s, brought skilled labour and entrepreneurship, contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth. However, tensions began to simmer. The sheer number of migrants strained resources, and whispers of competition for jobs and opportunities arose.

In 1983, fueled by the economic downturn, rising unemployment, and heightened nationalist sentiment, the Nigerian government, under Shehu Shagari, issued a decree expelling all undocumented immigrants.

Ghanaians, constituting an estimated half of the targeted population, faced the brunt of this directive.

This mass expulsion, euphemistically termed the “Ghanaian Alien Compliance Order,” forced over two million Ghanaians to return home, with little more than their belongings packed in readily available, cheap plastic bags.

As Ghanaians packed their meagre belongings, the bags, branded with the phrase “Made in Ghana,” were ironically labelled “Ghana Must Go” by Nigerians, reflecting the xenophobic sentiment that fueled the expulsion at the time. From then on, these bags became “Ghana Must Go” – a reminder of the forceful expulsion the Ghanaians faced.

With the hardship and displacement,

Ghanaians became resilient. Many went back home and rebuilt their lives, while others found success in other parts of West Africa and beyond.

Breaking: NLC, TUC issue 14-day nationwide strike notice to FG

Their grouse is the non-implementation of the 16-point agreement between organised labour (NLC and TUC) and the Federal Government on October 2, 2023.

Leaders of the NLC and TUC are sad that, despite organised labour’s efforts to ensure industrial peace, the government seems unperturbed by the mass suffering and hardship across the country.
