TODAY IS DEMOCRACY DAY, ODE TO PROMISES

TODAY IS DEMOCRACY DAY’ Four simple words that set the Nigerian nation alight and a new course of nationhood, after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election widely believed to have been won By the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, but annulled by the military Junta, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (rtd). A nation still struggling to take charge of its life, future and destiny. A nation free to dream dreams, big dreams of greatness in the country of free nations. Few occasions could be more exhilarating, fewer still could be more memorable.

Those four words rang in the hills of the plateau and in the rain forest of Ondo. They rang in the near arid lands of the north and in the rain soaked lands of the south. ‘’ Today is democracy day’’ All Nigerians looked forward to it as we celebrate the strength of democracy and our journey together towards unity and faith, peace and progress.

It has been 32years since the enthronement of a democratically civilian government, following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election. Since then we have had four civilian Presidents from Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to Muhamadu Buhari but nothing was working until May 29, 2023 when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu came on board with his Renewed Hope Agenda, which is gradually transforming the six-geo-political zones to the enviable status Nigerians have been yearning for.

A few years after Nigeria returned to civilian rule, we were embroiled in one crisis or the other ranging from insecurity to kidnapping, unemployment political and economic problems, natural disasters among other. But as violent and as threatening as the series of crisis was, it was no more than the teething problem, to which all nations are entitled.

However, two years at the helm of the nation’s affairs. Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda has not done much to address these ugly trends.

Apart from infrastructure development ranging from roads construction and reconstruction, commissioning of buildings to flagging- off of projects in the geo-political zones. Much have not being done in the areas of insecurity, of lifes and wanton destruction of property across the nation.

As president Tinubu continued with the second phase of his first tenure in office, Nigerians are impressing it on the legislative and the executive arms of government that it is their social responsibility to build a solid political foundation for us to have a political stability in the country, devoid of insecurity, economic hardship and unemployment.

‘’Today is democracy day’’, 32 years after the ugly incidents that brought about the declaration of June, 12 day as a public holiday, the four memorable words got stuck in the throat. The eyes water. The heart beats the beat of anxiety. The minds reel in the vertigo of confusion. A lump grows in the throat. Because promises were not kept. Hope was not realised. The present is a jumble of incomprehensibilities. The future is a nightmare of uncertainties. Few nations have done greater damage to themselves.
