THE BENUE FARMER AGRO CONNECT ANNOUNCES THE SUCCESSFUL DISTRIBUTION OF 300 TENERA PALM TREES TO COOPERATIVE MEMBERS IN MAKURDI.

The Benue Farmer Agro Connect, through her subsidiary, The Star Gazer’s Farmers Agro Connect Cooperative Society Limited, is delighted to announce the successful distribution of 300 Tenera varieties of palm trees to its cooperative members at the iconic IBB Square, Makurdi.

This milestone marks yet another significant step in our shared vision of promoting sustainable agriculture, enhancing economic empowerment, and fostering long-term food and livelihood security for our farmers across Benue State.

The Tenera variety of oil palm is known for its high yield and resilience, offering farmers a sustainable and profitable crop that can transform lives and communities over time.

As we distribute these high-quality seedlings, we are not just distributing trees—we are planting the seeds of prosperity, resilience, and shared growth that will connect the next generation of farmers.

This initiative is part of our broader commitment to encourage youth participation in agriculture, access to improved agricultural inputs, technical training, and cooperative structures that enable collective progress.
We believe that true transformation begins at the grassroots, and we are proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our members on this journey toward agricultural excellence.

We extend our deepest appreciation to all who supported the planning and ex*****on of this distribution event, including our dedicated team, and state agricultural subsectors.
Your commitment to the Benue Farmer Agro Connect's vision is invaluable.

To our cooperative members: we commend your trust, support, dedication to growth, innovation, and sustainable farming practices.
May these palm trees flourish and yield bountifully, as we aimed to connect the next generation of farmers.

As we move forward, we remain committed to empowering our members, advocating for farmer-friendly policies, and fostering agribusiness opportunities among ourselves.

Together, we grow.
Together, we thrive.

RICE CULTIVATION, HARVESTING & PROCESSING

Rice cultivation, harvesting, and processing in Africa generally follow these steps. While the specifics may vary depending on the region, climate, and farming practices, the overall process is as follows:

1. Land Preparation

Clearing the Land: Remove weeds, shrubs, and any debris to prepare the field.

Tilling: Plow and level the field to ensure proper water distribution.

Water Management: If growing lowland rice, construct bunds and irrigation channels to retain water.

2. Seed Selection and Preparation

Choosing Seeds: Farmers select high-yielding, disease-resistant rice varieties suitable for local conditions.

Seed Treatment: Soak seeds in water for 24–48 hours to encourage germination.

Nursery Preparation: In some cases, seeds are sown in a nursery before being transplanted into the main field.

3. Planting

Direct Seeding: Seeds are broadcasted or drilled directly into the field.

Transplanting: Young seedlings are transplanted from the nursery to the field, typically in rows to ensure proper spacing.

4. Crop Management

Irrigation: Regular watering is crucial, especially for lowland rice, which requires standing water during most of its growing cycle.

W**d Control: Hand weeding or the use of herbicides prevents weeds from competing with rice for nutrients.

Fertilization: Farmers apply organic or inorganic fertilizers to boost growth.

Pest and Disease Control: Use of pesticides or integrated pest management to protect the crop.

5. Harvesting

Timing: Harvest when 80–85% of the grains on the panicle are mature and golden.

Methods:

Manual: Cutting the stalks with sickles.

Mechanical: Using small-scale harvesters or combine harvesters.

Threshing: Separate grains from the stalks manually, with machines, or by beating the stalks.

6. Drying

Spread the harvested grains under the sun or use mechanical dryers to reduce moisture content to 12–14% for storage and milling.

7. Milling

Hulling: Remove the husk to produce brown rice.

Polishing: Further process to remove the bran layer, producing white rice.

Sorting and Grading: Remove broken or low-quality grains for market standards.

8. Storage and Packaging

Proper storage in airtight containers, warehouses, or silos to prevent pests, mold, and spoilage.

Packaging in sacks or smaller consumer-friendly sizes for distribution.

9. Distribution and Marketing

The processed rice is sold in local markets, exported, or processed further into rice flour or other products.

Note: Increasing mechanization and improved techniques are helping African farmers enhance productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and meet the growing demand for rice across the continent.
