HOW TO SUCCEED IN SCHOOL AND PASS ANY EXAMS.
Learning How To Read. (Part two)
Sequel to my previews post on how to , here are some key takeaways for those that are finding it difficult to read in and those that want to improve their reading skills:
1. Know why you're reading.
The next you set to read, have clarity of purpose; know exactly what you want to know from what you're reading. This will allow you to stay focused. For example: is it a you're looking for or answer to a question? Are you reading to have general of a topic or you want to have a detailed of something? You can also read to look for examples, quotes or statistical reference.
2. Read to extract information.
Extraction will help you to scan or skim in reading passages to locate more effectively. Scanning is when you are reading quickly to search for specific information. It helps you to identify terms as a means to know wether or not the material is relevant. Skimming on the other hand is when you read quickly to have a general idea of a concept. can help you to ascertain something you already know.
3. Learn word parts.
Learning words parts help you unlock the meaning of words by learning words. And when you learn individual words, the word connotation helps you better understand meaning and tone while reading. This will now help you to identify information words. On average, not more than 50% of words in or other reading materials are information words. Other words are just like glue and paint; they're there to connect other words and add interest, but not essential for meaning. If you on information words, then you can read faster and still have a better understanding.
4. Visualization and analytical reading.
Visualization helps you to broaden your by creating visual associations and memory cue. Visualization is a technique that involves focusing on mental images in order to understand the text you read. You use your 'eye of the mind' for to give meaning to words.
Try to read and visualize the following sentences:
" Rukayyah Aliyu is as as the jewelry she makes.",
" Ayeeshaah A. sells the most tasty crunchy Fara in west Africa.",
" Zaynerb 's Hijabs makes you look like a Queen.",
" ChefAfee 's stick meat will raise your taste bud and make you lick your mouth."
If you cab visualize these examples by picturing what it looks like in your mind, then you get the gist.
reading on the other hand is done when you want to make sure you understood what you read. This can be ; you may have to read or sentence twice or more, stop to think and visualize them and then jot down key words.
5. Learn to associate words.
helps you expand your vocabulary by associating difficult words with more familiar words to better understand their meaning. Reading and stopping to check meaning of each and every word you come across can slow your reading. It's good to stop and check meaning of words when reading on your own, but that can't be done in an hall. Learn to associate new words with familiar ones.
