Observing Positive Impact of Flood Control Measures in Gombe Communities

On the evening of Tuesday, 31st March 2026, I visited some communities in Gombe to assess the impact of the rainfall recorded on Monday, 30th March. These communities have often faced serious challenges whenever it rains, particularly flooding and erosion that damage houses and infrastructure.

However, I was encouraged by the visible improvements observed in some of the affected areas. Residents who spoke during interviews expressed appreciation for the interventions aimed at addressing these longstanding challenges.

The Gombe State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Government and the World Bank, has constructed drainage channels in the affected communities. The development is already helping to reduce the impact of heavy rainfall and flooding, while improving living conditions for residents.

Beyond controlling flooding, the projects have also reconnected communities that were previously divided by erosion. Access bridges have now been constructed, making movement easier and safer for residents.

The aerial views attached highlight some of the ongoing improvements across the communities.

The full video news report, including interviews with residents, will be published tomorrow, God willing.

EID-EL-FITR: SULTAN DECLARES FRIDAY AS FIRST DAY OF SHAWWAL

The Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs has announced that Friday, 20th March 2026, will mark the first day of Shawwal 1447AH, signaling the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr across Nigeria.

This follows the non-sighting of the new moon of Shawwal on Wednesday, 18th March 2026, which corresponded to the 29th day of Ramadan 1447AH. The committee, in collaboration with the National Moon Sighting Committee, confirmed that no credible reports were received from moon sighting committees nationwide.

As a result, Thursday, 19th March 2026, has been declared the 30th day of Ramadan.

The announcement was approved by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who also serves as President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.

In a statement, the Sultan congratulated the Muslim Ummah on the successful completion of Ramadan and urged continued prayers for peace, unity, and national development. He also wished Muslims a peaceful and joyous Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

The statement was signed by Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto.
