CWPPF Condemns Alleged Police Assault on Abuja Journalist Despite Court Ruling

The Coalition for Whistleblower Protection and Press Freedom (CWPPF) has condemned the alleged assault, harassment and destruction of the phone belonging to Pinnacle Daily editor, Sunday Michael Ogwu, by police officers during a demolition exercise in Abuja.

The coalition, comprising 31 media and civil society organisations and law firms, described the incident as a fresh violation of the constitutionally protected rights of Nigerians to document police activities.

In a statement issued on Thursday, CWPPF said Ogwu was assaulted on Wednesday, 19 August, while documenting a joint demolition operation around Lugbe Federal Housing Estate.

According to the coalition, Ogwu encountered about four police Hilux patrol vans marked ‘Lugbe Police Division’, alongside members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), at about 5.30pm.

Instead, Dr. Jamilu vowed to engage in issue-based, people-centred, and solutions-driven politicking and campaigns that will give no room for needless distractions.

He made the declaration through his Spokesman, Ibrahim Sani Shawai, in a statement heralding the commencement of the Presidential and National Assembly campaigns.

In the statement sent to Journalists, Gwamna said, "the people of Gombe State deserve a campaign that speaks to their concerns, addresses their needs and presents a clear vision for a better future".

Diphtheria: Epidemiologist urges vigilance and prompt medical care in Gombe

The Gombe State Epidemiologist, Dr. Nuhu Bile, has voiced concerns over reported cases of diphtheria among children in the state and is urging parents to remain vigilant.

Dr. Bile made told the Jewel Post in Gombe that children must receive timely medical attention, revealing that diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that typically affects the mucous membranes of the nose and throat.

He said diphtheria was treatable with medication, but that the disease could, in advanced stages, damage the heart, kidneys and nervous system and could be fatal, particularly in children.

The epidemiologist noted that recent cases recorded in the state involved children aged between four and 15 years.

“We have seen an upsurge in diphtheria cases among children aged four to 15; this may be linked to gaps in immunisation coverage, which could have left some children vulnerable to the disease,” De.

Borno LG boss warns residents against illegal tree felling

Kwaya Kusar Local Government Area of Borno State, in collaboration with the state Ministry of Environment and the Borno State Agency for the Great Green Wall, has launched a tree-planting campaign in Bila Kutiki community.

Launching the campaign in Kitiki, Kwaya Kusar LGA, with the distribution of 150,000 tree seedlings to residents, the Borno State Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Mohammed Habib, commended the council for the initiative, describing it as being in line with the environmental agenda of Governor Babagana Zulum.

Engr. Habib, who was represented by the Director of Forestry and Wildlife Services in the ministry, Mr. Aliyu Yusuf, said Borno State was facing serious environmental challenges, including desertification, deforestation, soil erosion and the effects of climate change.

The Gombe State Ministry of Health has called on members of the public to make voluntary blood donation a continuous practice, stressing that a reliable blood supply is critical to saving lives during medical emergencies.

The call was made by Dr. Siraj Abdulkarim, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics at the Gombe State Ministry of Health, following a blood donation campaign that yielded 575 pints of blood.

Dr. Abdulkarim said about 300 pints were collected during the first three days of the campaign, while a further 275 pints were donated after the campaign ended.

He noted that community leaders and traditional chiefs were among those who participated in the exercise, calling on members of the public to continued to donate blood even after the initial campaign period.

A leading security consultant has urged Nigerians to abandon the damaging habit of linking criminality to ethnicity or religion, warning that such generalisations threaten the very fabric of national unity.

ASUU accuses Gombe and Plateau of ignoring 2025 agreement, warns of industrial action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bauchi Zone, has accused the Gombe and Plateau State Governments of failing to honour the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement, warning that the stalemate could spark industrial unrest at the affected universities.

The union said that despite the agreement reached between the Federal Government, state governments and ASUU on 23rd December, 2025, neither Gombe State University nor Plateau State University had complied with its terms.

Speaking at a press conference held at Gombe State University, the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Comrade Timothy-Aku Namo, said the two state governments’ refusal to implement the deal had worsened academics’ living conditions and fuelled growing frustration among lecturers.
