2026 World Cup: Mexico Beat South Africa 2–0 in Dramatic Opener
By Auwal Abdullah

Mexico opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a statement 2–0 victory over South Africa in a match defined as much by discipline collapse as by decisive finishing, with three red cards reshaping the competitive balance at a packed opener.

The encounter, featuring the Mexico national football team and the South Africa national football team, began at a high tempo but quickly tilted into volatility as the referee issued multiple dismissals that left South Africa structurally compromised for large portions of the contest.

Mexico capitalised on the numerical advantage with clinical efficiency. Veteran forward Raúl Jiménez broke the deadlock, converting a well-worked attacking sequence that exposed gaps in South Africa’s depleted back line. The goal shifted momentum decisively in Mexico’s favour and forced South Africa into a deeper defensive posture.

North-West Governors Commit to Social Protection, Child Poverty Reduction
By Auwal Abdullah

Governors of Nigeria’s North-West region have committed to strengthening social protection systems and accelerating efforts to reduce multidimensional poverty affecting children and women across the region.

The resolution followed a high-level policy dialogue in Kano convened by the North-West Governors’ Forum in partnership with the Office of the Vice President, the European Union, UNICEF, and other development partners.

The two-day engagement brought together Vice President Kashim Shettima, governors, federal officials, traditional and religious leaders, the private sector, youth representatives, and development partners to address persistent poverty and vulnerability in the region.

With an estimated population of about 60 million, the North-West continues to record some of the highest poverty indicators in Nigeria.

By Auwal Abdullah

The Gombe State Government has taken delivery of nutrition commodities worth N1 billion aimed at combating acute malnutrition among children across the state.

The program, done with UNICEF, includes Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) and Small Quantity Lipid-based Nutrient Supplements (SQLNS) to help prevent and treat malnutrition.

Speaking during an inspection of the commodities, the state nutrition officer, pharmacist Ahmed Hashidu, said the state received a total of 11,517 cartons of nutrition supplies between March and April this year.

According to him, the commodities were delivered in seven truckloads and have been stored in designated warehouses pending distribution.

"We received a total of 11,517 cartons. Of these, 9,877 cartons are stored in this warehouse, while another 1,640 cartons are kept in a separate facility. All the commodities are in good condition," he said.

Police Trust Fund Commissions Upgraded Gombe Divisional HQ
By David K. Goni

The Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) has commissioned an upgraded divisional police headquarters in Gombe State as part of efforts to strengthen security infrastructure and improve policing services across the country.

Government officials, security personnel, and community representatives attended the inauguration of the facility, described as a model divisional headquarters, on Wednesday.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, said the upgraded headquarters would enhance the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force and support effective community policing in the state.

He noted that the project aligns with the federal government's commitment to improving security and public service delivery under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
