Former US president Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, a statement from his office said on Sunday.

Biden, 82, was diagnosed on Friday after he saw a doctor last week for urinary symptoms.

The cancer is characterised by a Gleason score of 9 with metastasis to the bone, his office said, meaning it is a more aggressive form of the disease.

Biden and his family are said to be reviewing treatment options, the statement said.

The former president's office added that the cancer is hormone-sensitive, meaning it can likely be managed.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has rescued seven kidnapped victims, arrested suspected criminals and recovered arms and ammunition in a series of coordinated crackdowns across Niger, Plateau, and Taraba States.

In Niger State, police operatives rescued seven victims abducted from Tungan-Boka and Masaha communities in Mashegu (Local Government Areas) LGA, after a gun duel with the kidnappers in a forest near Tungan-Boka.

In Jos, Plateau State, officers raided a hideout in the Bauchi Road area, recovering an abandoned ash coloured Golf Wagon containing 500 rounds of 7.65mm ammunition linked to an earlier homicide investigation from May 3,2025.

In a similar operation in Taraba State, two suspected kidnappers were arrested in separate operations. One suspect, Lookman Tanko, was caught with an AK-47, a pump-action gun, and a long rifle, while Peter Apai, was arrested in Ardo Kola LGA with similar weapons, including an AK-47 magazine.

According to a statement by the Force's Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the suspects remain in custody and will be charged after investigations are concluded.

The statement partly reads: " The Nigeria Police Force has recorded significant successes in its relentless efforts to combat banditry, kidnapping, and the illegal possession of fi****ms. Through a potent combination of human intelligence and expertly coordinated operations, operatives of the Force have apprehended numerous suspects, made significant recoveries, and disrupted dangerous criminal networks operating across the country.

"Recently, a group of suspected kidnappers invaded Tungan-Boka and Masaha villages of Mashegu LGA of Niger State and kidnapped seven persons, operatives of the Niger state Police command in collaboration with local security teams, mobilized for a rescue operation, and trailed the suspected kidnappers to a forest within Tungan-Boka village where the kidnappers were engaged in a gun duel. In the ensuing duel, the kidnappers were overpowered, and the seven kidnapped persons were rescued unhurt.

"In Plateau State, acting on credible intelligence, Police operatives attached to the state command raided a criminal hideout along Bauchi Road in Jos North Local Government Area. An abandoned ash-colored Golf Wagon was recovered. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 500 rounds of 7.65mm ammunition. These recoveries are linked to an ongoing investigation into a culpable homicide case reported on May 3, 2025, where an unidentified individual was killed. Efforts are being intensified to locate and arrest the perpetrators of these acts."

Tinubu approves licences for North’s oil project

President Bola Tinubu has granted regulatory approvals for the issuance of all critical licences required for the Kolmani Integrated Development Project, a multibillion-dollar oil exploration initiative located between Bauchi and Gombe states.

The development was disclosed by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of the permanent site of the Bauchi Oil and Gas Academy in Alkaleri Local Government Area.

A statement issued on Sunday by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Nneamaka Okafor, quoted Lokpobiri as saying the approvals were part of efforts to ramp up oil production by activating all available hydrocarbon platforms across the country.

He said, “The imperative to activate all available oil platforms for increased production led President Bola Tinubu to grant approvals for the issuance of all critical regulatory licences for the Kolmani Integrated Development Projects.”

Lokpobiri noted that the administration was committed to leveraging the full potential of Nigeria’s energy resources to drive industrial growth, create jobs and boost national revenue.

“Mr President is intentional about transforming our energy landscape into one that fuels industrial growth, creates jobs and enhances national revenue,” he stated.

Commending Bauchi State for aligning with the Federal Government’s energy goals, the minister said the establishment of the oil and gas academy demonstrated the state’s commitment to building local capacity for the sector.

“With this academy, Bauchi is making a strategic contribution to the development of the human capital needed to drive our sector forward,” he added.

The minister also highlighted the importance of developing local capacity to manage Nigeria’s abundant fossil fuel reserves, while commending the Petroleum Technology Development Fund for its role in manpower development.

“PTDF has played a critical role in ensuring that our sector is not just productive but also future-ready,” Lokpobiri noted, expressing optimism that the new institution would forge a strong partnership with the PTDF.

On his part, Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, appreciated the Federal Government’s support and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to the academy’s success.

“This institution will serve as a foundation for skill acquisition and innovation that will benefit not just Bauchi State but the entire nation,” the governor said.

The Kolmani Integrated Development Project, first inaugurated in November 2022, marking the start of oil exploration in Northern Nigeria. It’s situated in the Kolmani River II oil field, a border community between Bauchi and Gombe States.

Last week, the Group Chief Executive of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Bayo Ojulari, disclosed that the state-owned energy firm would resume oil drilling in the oil field.

According to him, these projects will allow previously closed companies to reopen so they can continue operating and open new ones. “This will bring benefits to the region, which will lead to everyone benefiting because wealth will increase. Therefore, we must return and continue this project,” he said.

“We will continue with the oil drilling in Kolmani and other places. After the oil drilling, we will also ensure that we complete the gas pipeline from Ajaokuta to Kano,” Ojulari said.
