29/01/2025

I am extremely excited to share that we had a very interesting, interactive, and productive meeting with the management of my institution, Federal University Gusau, led by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. M.J. Abubakar.

This meeting was part of our ongoing commitment to build a strong, cordial relationship with the university management, which is essential and critical for the development of our administration. It was also a valuable and incredible opportunity to share our achievements, discuss our future projects and initiatives aimed at developing the university, and address some of the challenges students are facing, particularly regarding their general welfare.

The meeting, held yesterday, 29th January 2025, in the council chamber of the university, was attended by the university's management team, the Executive Members of the Students' Representative Council (SRC), and members of the Students' Representative Assembly (SRA), led by me.

As a student leader, I used this opportunity to raise several concerns on behalf of the students, which include:

1. Improvement of student welfare, specifically in terms of access to toilet facilities, water facilities, and a conducive learning environment.
2. Enhancement of lighting within the university community, with a proposal for the installation of floodlights in key areas.
3. Improvement of sports activities through the procurement of sports equipment and the rehabilitation of sports facilities.
4. A request for the management to grant a waiver for graduating students, particularly indigenous students of Zamfara State, whose original SSCE results have been withheld, allowing them to collect a statement of results while they await the submission of their original results. This request was immediately rejected by the Vice Chancellor, who emphasized his stance against academic compromise.
5. Support for student unions in organizing social activities, such as the proposed SRC Cultural Day, which was generously approved and supported by the management, with the condition that it adheres to the university's policies and regulations.
6. Involvement of the university management in improving the well-being of students residing in the Sabon Gida community.
7. Lifting of the ban on the closure of classrooms during evening hours, which has been stifling academic activities for students.
8. Improvement of the university's health facility.
9. Ensuring that the remaining funds for NELfund beneficiaries are properly allocated.
10. Greater inclusion of students in certain management-level committees.

In his response, the Vice Chancellor issued the following directives:

1. Ensure that all toilet facilities, especially those reserved for students in departments and faculties, are opened and maintained for students' use.
2. Guarantee access to adequate water in all blocks with water facilities.
3. Proceed with the installation of floodlights in key areas.
4. Include students in student-related committees.
5. Establish charging points for students.
6. Continue efforts to improve the health facility.
7. Clarify the situation with NELfund: Students should note that any excess money will be refunded back to NELfund, as per their directives. Students whose registration fees are lower than the amount approved by NELfund will have the remaining balance sent back to NELfund.

The Vice Chancellor also commended my administration and encouraged us to continue being good ambassadors of the university.

By God’s will, we will continue to cooperate with the university management for the continued development of the university.

Since last year, I had a thought that I wanted to either share it here or discuss with someone. However, due to my tight schedule for exams and unnecessary excuses, I couldn’t find the time to do so.

I have noticed the high unemployment rate in Nigeria, which has been worrying me, especially among our youth. The most commonly discussed causes include incompetent leaders, corruption, lack of proper education, and the large, exploited population.

However, from my perspective—which might be wrong —one of the major causes of unemployment is our youth's inability to dream bigger and move out of their comfort zones. What I mean here is this, why do we only complain about Nigeria not having enough jobs for us, or about the lack of transparency in the job application process?

Why do our youth limit themselves and adopt such narrow thinking that we consider jobs at NNPC, CBN, or FIRS as the ultimate achievement—the best life could offer us?

Why don’t we aspire to work in world-class companies like Microsoft, Disney, BMW, ExxonMobil, Chevron, and other tech and global organizations? Why don’t we dream of lecturing at prestigious universities like Harvard, Oxford, MIT or other prestigious universities?

We are truly limiting our abilities and goals in life. We need to think beyond our horizons.

Sadly, Nigeria is a place where individual talent and ability are often underappreciated. But we can go out there and work hard to better our lives, the lives of our families, and, ultimately, elevate our communities.

My dear young fellow Nigerians, life has far more opportunities than we can imagine. All we need to do is change the way we think—a shift in our paradigm. More importantly, we must strive to graduate with the best results, develop skills to meet the requirements of these global organizations, and not forget the power of prayer. It is truly powerful.

We have a brother on this platform who works in in one big company in Abu Dhabi. Last year, I listened to his presentation during a panel discussion titled 'More Than Just a Pharmacist.' Wallahi, I was so inspired by his personal story and there are many more stories of Nigerians in abroad I have heard. Those gave me hope that we can all achieve great things even outside the country.

I hope I’ve clearly expressed my thoughts and would love to hear from you. Thank you.

Dr. Yakubu Sani Wudil is correct in asserting that some universities require graduates to have at least a "C" grade in all their transcripts for job considerations. Regardless of the class of degree, an "F" in a transcript can disqualify candidates.

I personally experienced this during my undergraduate studies. I once earned an "F" in one of the simplest courses in my 200 level, Finite Mathematics. During the exam, I started with a tedious matrix computation question that took me over 1 hour and 30 minutes to solve. By the time I finished, I had less than 1 hour and 30 minutes left to attempt the remaining four questions in the 3-hour exam. As soon as we left the examination hall, I told my friends I had failed the course. Many didn’t believe me, but when the results were released, I had a very high GPA alongside an "F" in that course.

I retook the course the following year, earning an "A" without attending additional lectures that semester. Fast forward to 2019, after completing my Ph.D., I applied for faculty positions at two universities in Saudi Arabia, both located in the holy city of Madinah. I was interviewed by both institutions. One offered me a job, as my CV met their requirements—I had the necessary number of publications and research expertise. They scheduled my start date for January 2020. The other university, however, rejected my application solely because of the "F" in my first-degree transcript. A research collaborator from the University told me.

In the end, I couldn’t take up the offer from the first university due to time constraints. Instead, I accepted a postdoctoral position at one of China's top 10 universities in Guangzhou in early 2019. The rest is history.

In many cases, strict grade requirements might just be a way to reduce the number of applicants. Interestingly, candidates with degrees from European institutions—even with an "F"—might still secure jobs at such universities.

The key takeaway is to strive for the best possible grades during your studies, as this can significantly impact future opportunities.
