ZAMFARA EXECUTIVE COUNCIL APPROVES ₦6.271 BILLION FOR AGRICULTURAL MECHANISATION PROGRAMME

The Zamfara State Executive Council has approved the participation of the State in the Federal Government's Renewed Hope National Agricultural Mechanisation Programme, with a total financial commitment of ₦6.271 billion to procure tractors, agricultural implements and establish an Agricultural Mechanisation Hub (Agri-Hub) in Gusau.

The approval was granted during the 13th Executive Council meeting following the presentation of a memorandum by the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture.

Under the Programme, Zamfara State will procure 100 tractors, comprising 50 units of 81 Horsepower (2WD) tractors and 50 units of 90 Horsepower (2WD) tractors, in addition to 100 tractor trackers, 100 disc harrows, 100 disc ploughs and 100 disc ridgers. The package also includes the establishment of a modern Agri-Hub that will coordinate mechanisation services across the State.

The Council approved ₦6,251,025,000.00 for the procurement of the tractors, agricultural equipment and construction of the Agri-Hub, as well as an additional ₦20 million to cover documentation and other implementation logistics.

The Programme, facilitated through the Bank of Agriculture and approved by the President, provides participating states with access to agricultural machinery at a 40 percent subsidy, making modern farming equipment more affordable and accessible.

The Executive Council observed that agriculture remains the backbone of Zamfara State's economy and the primary means of livelihood for a large proportion of its population. It noted that participation in the Programme is in line with Governor Dauda Lawal's commitment to transforming the agricultural sector through mechanisation, increased food production and improved farmers' productivity.

The Agri-Hub, to be established in Gusau on a parcel of land measuring between two and five hectares, will serve as the operational centre for the deployment, maintenance and management of the tractors and implements. It will also provide mechanisation services, farm input distribution, commodity aggregation and storage facilities, extension services, farmers' training, market linkages and digital financial services.

To ensure sustainability, the tractors will operate under a pay-as-you-service model, enabling farmers to access mechanised farming at affordable rates while generating revenue for equipment maintenance and future replacement.

The Council expressed confidence that the initiative will reduce the cost of land preparation, improve the timeliness of farming operations, expand cultivated farmland, boost food production, strengthen food security and create employment opportunities for tractor operators, mechanics, technicians and other participants in the agricultural value chain.

As part of the resolutions, the Executive Council directed the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to allocate a suitable parcel of land in Gusau for the Agri-Hub, while authorising the Ministry of Agriculture to liaise with the Bank of Agriculture and other relevant agencies to complete all necessary documentation and implementation arrangements.

The Zamfara State Government reaffirmed its commitment to investing in agriculture as a key driver of economic growth, food security, employment generation and sustainable development under the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal.
