Cassava: A Lifeline Crop in Takpodomey, Southern Benin

Cassava is a major food source across many communities in southern Benin, including the village of Takpodomey. Its ability to thrive in poor soil and withstand dry conditions makes it a reliable crop for local farmers.

In Takpodomey, cassava is traditionally processed into several local foods such as:

• Gari – a coarse, fermented flour made by grating and roasting the root.
• Agbé (Cassava paste) – a thick, starchy mash enjoyed in meals.
• Tapioca – produced from the starchy extract of cassava.

Beyond being a dietary staple, cassava processing plays a key social role — especially among women, who often handle tasks like peeling, grating, pressing, and drying the crop. It’s more than food — it’s part of everyday rural life.
