A video going viral today has opened up a debate a lot of Nigerians have sidestepped for years.
At its core, it asks one thing:
*Does Nigeria have a talent problem, or do companies have a talent management problem?*
The video shows a Nigerian woman responding to complaints that 500 roles can’t be filled because of a “shortage of talent.” Her reply struck a chord.
She pointed out that many employers expect:
- 5+ years of experience
- A stack of technical skills
- Instant output
But they won’t:
- Offer competitive pay
- Provide training
- Invest in growing junior staff
She added that she landed a job over graduates with BSc degrees, even though she only had a secondary school certificate. The reason? Her employer valued what she could deliver over the paper she had.
One line from her stuck out:
“You can’t put influencers and content creators in core corporate roles, then turn around and say there’s no talent.”
Agree or not, the conversation is important.
Nigeria’s future of work hinges on:
1. How companies hire
2. How people build skills
3. How much employers are willing to invest in their people
4. Whether results outweigh certificates
So what’s the real problem here?
*No talent, unrealistic expectations, poor pay, or weak work ethic?*
