Editing is a bit like being a surgeon for your writing!

Imagine you're a skilled surgeon, and your writing is a patient. When you first write something, it's like doing the surgery – you get all the ideas down on paper. But just like a surgeon doesn't leave the operating room messy, you don't want your writing to be messy either.

Editing is where you put on your surgical gloves and go back to make sure everything looks and works perfectly. Surgeons check every detail after an operation, and you do the same with your writing. You fix any mistakes, rearrange sentences, and make sure everything flows smoothly.

Think of words as your tools, just like a surgeon's scalpel. Editing helps you choose the right words, just like a surgeon selects the perfect instrument for a procedure. You're making precise cuts to make your writing as sharp and effective as possible.

So, editing is your chance to be a writing surgeon, ensuring your words are in tip-top shape and ready to impress your readers. It's the key to making your writing as precise and polished as a successful surgery!

DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER

Please forget that adage, people are always going to judge your book by its cover, the title being one of the most important things there. You just must get it right!

Nobody is going to buy or open your book and read it if your title does not appeal to them.

Think of it this way, you want people to purchase your book and ultimately read and get the value it's loaded with. Your book title is the billboard that announces the value your book will deliver. It is the signpost that points people in the direction of purchasing your book.

If it is ineffective in giving direction, nobody is going to arrive at the destination you want them to arrive at (i.e. purchasing your book).

I have had to work with some of my editing and book project clients to revise their book titles for this very reason.

Why spend so much time, effort and other resources to write a book that will flop in sales?

Here are some principles to adhere to in crafting a book title.

I will treat the first in this post and treat the others in subsequent posts.

1. Clarity

Think of your book title as a single line summary of your book. People must clearly understand the crux of your book by simply seeing the title.

For example,
1: “Recovering from a failed relationship.”
That is clear enough.

2: “How to win your war against acne.”
That is clearer still.

3: “Stonewall”
Except this is a fictional book, this book title appeals to no one.

It does not convey a clear message.

Your book title should ideally express the message of your book clearly.

This helps people to connect to your book.

Do not be deceived into using a cryptic book title because 'intrigue sells', especially if your book is non-fiction, readers usually want to read books that will either solve a problem or fulfil a desire. Your book title should point in that direction without ambiguity.

There is a way to use intrigue to sell your book and it's not by pasting an ambiguous book title on your cover page.

N.B: Feel free to flout this principle if you are a popular author with a large fan base.

Mr. Ade has a valuable book idea that can be helpful to many people, unfortunately, he has no time to write the book. Apart from time, he is not a skilled writer.

Can Mr. Ade ever realise his dream of becoming an author and impacting many lives with his book?

Our answer is yes!

The route is ghostwriting.

If Mr. Ade reaches out to us, we'll help him write his book and he'll get the credit as the author.

First, we'll get clarity on his book idea and ideal audience.

Also, we'll get clarity on his vision for his book, his preferred style of writing and tone.

If he has materials, we'll take them and go through them. They'll serve as the building blocks for the book project.

If not, we'll don my research gloves and gather material/resources.

Next, we'll create a book outline (if he doesn't have one) and seek his approval on it.

Once that is approved, we'll get to work.

Many people shun the idea of ghostwriting because they fear the book would be alien to their personal ideals.

That doesn't happen with us. We involve the would-be authors in the writing process as much as they let us.

We do so to give them a true sense of ownership and participation in the work.

That is how we have helped several people who were just like Mr. Ade.

They are now happy and fulfilled as authors.

Read this if you're planning to write a children's book.

Children's books have about 5 broad categories:

* Board books - age 0-3

* Picture books - age 3-8

* Early Readers books - ages 5-8

* Chapter books - Ages 7-9

* Middle grade books - Ages 8 - 13

* Young Adult fiction - Ages 13- 18

Whichever age group you're targeting, it's important to keep the writing highly relatable and choose a writing that suits each category.

Good morning.

We're holding the second edition of the Kids Writing Workshop this holiday season.

We've made some changes to the modalities to accommodate for things like timing and network issues that were a problem the other time.

This time around, we'll be using prerecorded video lessons. Each day lesson would be sent the night before. Each child will watch and practice at their own convenience.

Then we'll have a live session per week for reviews.

Your story is meant to move hearts.

Your message is meant to change lives.

But none will happen if you don't write.

Worse, no one will read it and be impacted if you don't publish it.

Let's help you reach the people you are meant to serve.

Get published this year.
