*Team Nigeria Dazzles in an Electrifying Day 2 at CAA U18/U20 Athletics Championship*

Under the watchful eyes of the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Alhaji Shehu Dikko, the Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, and the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Day 2 of the ongoing CAA U18/U20 African Athletics Championship lit up with Nigerian brilliance on home soil at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.

It was a clean sweep in the girls’ 100m U-18 final as Team Nigeria asserted its dominance sweeping all medals in the category. Miracle Ezechukwu blazed to gold in 11.88secs, as she was followed closely by Rosemary Nwankwo (11.96secs), captain of the Invited Junior Athletes at the 22nd National Sports Festival, while Miriam Jegede clinched bronze with 12.20secs, completing a historic podium takeover.

The momentum carried into the U-20 girls’ 100m final, where Nigeria bagged gold and silver. Chioma Nweke stormed to first place in 11.65secs, followed by Success Oyibu with 11.78secs. Although Nigeria’s third finalist, Chiamaka Nwankwo, narrowly missed the podium, she showed great promise, finishing fourth in 11.98secs.

In the boys’ category, Nigeria kept the flag flying with two bronze medals. Clifford Igbigbidje clocked 10.89secs in the U-18 100m final, while John Caleb’s 10.61secs finish earned him bronze in the U-20 final. Both races were fiercely contested, with South Africa taking gold and silver in both events.

Capping off a thrilling day, Nigeria triumphed in the U-20 Mixed 4x400m Relay. In a race that swung back and forth, Nigeria’s anchor, Favour Onyah, held firm and surged ahead to secure gold after South Africa’s anchor stumbled near the finish. That victory sealed Nigeria’s third gold of the day, following the earlier wins in the girls’ 100m U-18 and U-20 events.

Dignitaries including CAA President Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, athletics legend Chief Segun Odegbami, Olympian Mary Onyali, and other key stakeholders were in attendance, joining thousands of spirited fans who turned out to witness the future of African athletics.

The Presidency, in partnership with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), took its grassroots tax reform sensitisation campaign to Ibadan on Tuesday.

Through the Presidential Community Engagement Office (South-West), the outreach aimed to educate traders, artisans, transport workers, and small business owners on the benefits of the newly signed tax reform laws.

Under the theme “Irọrun fún Mẹkúnù” (Relief for the Common Man), the team moved through key areas like Ojoo and Mokola, using mobile banners, sound systems, and materials in English, Yoruba, and Pidgin to explain the reforms.

💡 Key highlights included tax exemptions for low-income earners, reduced tax burdens on small businesses, streamlined payment processes, and enhanced revenue control for states and local governments.

Speaking during the campaign, Moremi Ojudu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-West), emphasised that the reforms are designed to ease the financial pressure on ordinary Nigerians and ensure no one is left behind in the reform process.

The Ibadan exercise forms part of a national drive to make the Renewed Hope Agenda more impactful for communities across the country.

Governor Dapo Abiodun has made Ogun state an attractive Hub for thriving Sports Economy - NSC DG Bukola Olopade

The Director General of Hon Bukola Olopade says the youth of Ogun state will eternally be grateful to Governor Dapo for reviving sports in the state by making Abeokuta an international sports hub.

The DG stated this on Day one of the CAA African U28/U2O Athletics championship holding in the heart of Abeokuta at the sparkling newly refurbished MKO Sports Arena.

" Look at how Governor Dapo Abiodun has turned around the landscape of Sports development in Ogun state by investing in sports infrastructure across board and today Ogun state is comfortably hosting the entire Africa in an international event"

" Ogun state is now a sporting hub not only of a national level but international standard, capable of attracting the very best of international stars".

" This is what President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was talking about when he gave us the mandate at the National Sports Commission not to focus only on sports consumption which is attending competitions outside the country but also on Sports production which is hosting more international competitions here in Nigeria that will benefit our young athletes".

" This Championship is coming barely two months after Ogun state hosted unarguably one of the best ever organised National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway games 2024 and the Governor is even determined to do more to leave an unmatched sporting legacy for the youth of the state.Myself and the Chairman of the Sports commission, Mallam Shehu Dikkk cannot thank the Governor enough".

Meanwhile After a few months of preparation and planning, action finally began on Wednesday inside the main bowl of the stadium as the opening day witnessed exciting actions and fireworks from some of Africa's future stars.

Host Nigeria and defending champions South Africa stole the show on the opening day with some eye catching performances especially in the men and women 100m heat and triple jump final.

Nigeria’s Praise Ikweki won a bronze medal in the High Jump event being the first medal for the country at the Championships.

Ikwesi, who paired with Melvin Ododo, started from 1.80m, achieving a perfect record until a near missed at 2.03m before he won his third attempt to scale to the next round.

He missed his three attempts at 2.06m after hitting the pole, paving the way for South Africa’s Mateo Le Roux, who won the gold.

In the U-18 Heat One 100m event race, South Africa’s Mukona Manavhela finished in a time of 11.38, behind Nigeria’s Igbigbidje James Clifford 11.44 to qualify for the semi-final.

In the female category, Nigeria’s Mariam Jegede won the first heat of the U18 Girls 100m clocking a time of 12.13s while Congo’s Boukama Gladys finished second in 12.47s and Ghana’s Darkoah Kwateng ran 12.64s to settle for third.

South Africa departs for Nigeria to defend U-18/U-20 title
A 70-strong team of athletes departed in two groups today Monday July 14, full of confidence that they will defend their CAA U-18/U-20 continental crown in Nigeria.
Split into two because of flights availability, the first group of over 50 members took off at 3am, while the second group is expected to leave around 6pm on Rwandan airways. Due to the nature of their flight, the latter group will then have a sleepover in Kigali and resume the journey tomorrow morning.
A brief pre-departure meeting held at the OR Tambo Garden Court hotel in Isando, Kempton Park in Johannesburg, the various team managers, led by the Head of Delegation John Mathane - the newly elected Vice President of ASA, informed parents that their children are in good hands.
The athletes, some of whom were nervous but excited, were addressed on the team protocols, security, general behaviour, their wellbeing, managing expectations and the contrasting weather conditions in West Africa.
The team includes various specialised coaches, a doctor, physiotherapists, massage therapists and skilled managers in different roles.
