My Journey to NYSC Orientation Camp: A Lesson in Resilience The journey to my NYSC orientation camp was far from easy. What looked like a simple trip turned into hours of sitting on the road, carrying heavy luggage, dealing with transportation challenges, and facing the uncertainty that comes with traveling to a new environment. Along the way, I met different people, heard inspiring stories, and learned that everyone was heading toward the same destination but carrying different dreams and expectations. The most stressful part was arriving at the camp gate. The registration process, security checks, and long queues tested my patience. At that moment, I realized that NYSC was already teaching one important lesson: resilience. Despite the stress, the experience was worth it. Walking into the camp and seeing thousands of fellow corps members from different parts of Nigeria gave me a sense of belonging and excitement for the journey ahead. Every challenge on the road became part of a story I will always remember. Sometimes, growth begins long before we reach our destination. The journey to NYSC camp taught me that success is not only about arriving; it's also about enduring the process that gets you there.

If You Had the Chance to Do Your NYSC Again, What Would You Do Right?

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year is more than just a mandatory service program—it's a unique opportunity to build skills, networks, and experiences that can shape your future.
Looking back, if I had the chance to do my NYSC again, here are a few things I would do differently:
✅ Focus More on Skill Acquisition I would invest more time in learning high-demand skills such as data analysis, financial modeling, digital marketing, web development, and project management.
✅ Build a Strong Professional Network I would connect intentionally with professionals, mentors, colleagues, and fellow corps members. Opportunities often come through relationships.
✅ Take CDS Projects More Seriously Community Development Service activities provide a platform to create impact and develop leadership skills. I would participate more actively and initiate meaningful projects.
✅ Save and Invest Early Rather than spending most of my allowance, I would prioritize saving and learning about investments to build financial discipline.
✅ Document My Achievements I would keep a record of projects, volunteer work, certifications, and accomplishments to strengthen my CV and professional profile.
✅ Attend More Career and Business Events Every seminar, workshop, and networking event presents an opportunity to learn something new and meet people who can influence your career positively.
✅ Create a Long-Term Career Plan I would use the service year to gain clarity about my career goals and prepare strategically for life after NYSC.
The truth is that we cannot change the past, but we can learn from it. For those currently serving, maximize every opportunity. One year may seem short, but the lessons and connections can last a lifetime.

✅ Financial Statement Analysis
✅ Risk Assessment & Due Diligence

One thing that stands out is how important tools like Excel, Power BI, and financial analysis are in solving real business problems and supporting major investment decisions.

Many fresh graduates look at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year as a period to just slide by, collect a monthly stipend, and wait for "real life" to begin.

But here is the truth: Your service year is 12 full months of valid professional work experience—if you choose to treat it that way.
Whether you are teaching in a classroom, working in a corporate office, or executing a Community Development Service (CDS) project, you are actively building corporate skills.
During my time in the khaki uniform, I am focusing on building:
📈 Project Management: Organizing tasks and meeting deadlines at my PPA.
🤝 Stakeholder Management: Navigating diverse work cultures and community needs.
💡 Problem Solving: Turning limited resources into real, visible impact.To my fellow Corp Members (PCMs and current Corpers): Stop waiting for graduation from the scheme to start building your portfolio.
