Murray encouraged by progress after hip surgery

By
Andy Murray insists he is encouraged by his recovery from career-saving hip surgery as the former world number one prepares to play next month’s Shanghai Masters.

Murray is aiming to rebuild his singles ranking following the operation in January.

The 32-year-old Scot made a tentative return to singles action in Cincinnati last month.

He was last seen on court at a Challenger event in Majorca — his first time playing at that lower level for 14 years — and his next tournament will be the Zhuhai Championships later in September.

Although Murray lost in the third round in Majorca against the unheralded Matteo Viola, the two-time Wimbledon champion was pleased he came through three matches in four days without any complications.

“The last tournament was at Challenger level which was good for me. We had good crowds there and it was different. I haven’t played at that level for 14 or 15 years but I enjoyed it,” Murray told reporters on Thursday.

“I am just happy to be healthy again. I would like to be playing at a higher level but it was fun for me out there.

“Recovering from matches because I don’t have pain, the preparation is fun. Hopefully, it keeps going that way.”

Murray has committed to playing for four weeks in a row as the China Open in Beijing is sandwiched in between his outings in Zhuhai and Shanghai before returning to Europe to compete in the European Open in Antwerp.

While he is now able to play pain-free, Murray is still short of speed around the court, something he is banking on returning over the next few months.

“Now I don’t have any limitations on what I can’t do,” Murray added at an event at Queen’s Club to promote a daily liquid supplement developed specifically for the Scot.

“I am certainly still a little bit slow in terms of where I would like to get to. I’m thinking that in the next four or five months that is going to get better.

“Each week I have felt better but performances haven’tnecessarily shown that, in terms of results. But I have been feeling physically better.”

Snakes on a plane: 88 reptiles found in man’s suitcase

An Austrian man who smuggled 88 living reptiles including 43 poisonous snakes from the Philippines was stopped by customs officers at Vienna airport, Austria’s Finance Ministry said Thursday.

When the Austrian national arrived via Doha on Sunday, the officers screened his suitcase and saw that it was full of animals.

After the man admitted that it contained poisonous snakes, the officers decided to transfer the closed luggage to Vienna’s Schoenbrunn Zoo, where experts opened it.

They found Samar cobras, Mangrove snakes and vipers, as well as dozens of monitor lizards and geckos. Many of the smaller animals were transported in nylon stockings.

The traveller said that he had planned to sell the reptiles at a fair in Germany.

He faces legal proceedings for alleged breach of Austria’s law regulation trade in protected species.

The zoo in Vienna, as well as an Austrian reptile zoo, agreed to take in the animals.

Anthony Joshua advised on how to beat Andy Ruiz in rematch

By

British fighter, Anthony Joshua has been advised by his trainer, Robert McCracken, on how to beat Mexican fighter, Andy Ruiz in their rematch scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia on 7 December.

DAILY POST recalls that Ruiz Jr shocked Joshua to win the IBF, WBA and WBO titles in June.

But McCracken has now urged Joshua to remain calm during the rematch and use his reach to control Ruiz and avoid making the same mistakes he made in the first fight at Madison Square Garden.

“I think the key factor is that Anthony stays calm, doesn’t rush and uses his reach to control Ruiz,” McCracken told TheSportsman.

“In the first fight, he rushed it when he knocked Ruiz down, it’s very clear what he did wrong and he got caught. It’s a lesson learnt and I hope he can put it right in the rematch.

“He’s just going to learn from the fight and prepare diligently.

“Listen Ruiz is a great fighter, he’s a heavyweight champion and Anthony has got to be at his very best to beat Ruiz and win those titles back and he’s aware of that and that’s what he plans to do.”

Pastor Accuses Wife Of Sleeping With Senior Pastor In Ibadan

Court

An Abuja-based clergy, Joel Bamimore, on Thursday dragged his wife, Mary before a Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan, seeking dissolution of their 19-year-old marriage over alleged infidelity.

Bamimore alleged that his wife capitalised on his physical disability to continually cheat on him. He alleged that his father had once caught Mary in an uncompromising position with another man.

“I have forgiven Mary’s adulterous behaviours before. I can no longer tolerate it because I am also a pastor and for the sake of my well-being. On several occasions, Mary has hidden under the guise of going to our senior Pastor’s home to assist him to fetch water and wash his clothes. In the pastor’s home one day, I met both of them in a compromising position and my initial fear was confirmed,” Bamimore said.

Mary, the respondent denied all the allegations gave her consent for a divorce. She now lives in Oyo Town pointed out that her greatest mistake in life was her decision to marry Bamimore, in spite of her parent’s warning.

“I am not an adulterer, I have lived with Bamimore with all sincerity and honesty. The clergy he referred to as my lover, is a real man of God, in fact, he usually gives my husband, money to feed his family. I indeed used to assist the man’s family with their chores. It has become my husband’s way of life to accuse me of adultery and embarrass me in the public, stripping me naked and inflicting injuries on me,” Mary explained.

After hearing the testimonies, Chief Ademola Odunade, the President of the court, ordered them to produce more evidence to support their arguments, noting that Pastor Bamimore was not being fair to his wife.

He adjourned the case until Oct. 30 for a continuation of hearing.

Tribunal: Why Buhari floored Atiku – Uzodinma

By Chinonso Alozie, Owerri

The Imo state 2019 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, yesterday, said that President Muhammadu Buhari, was able to defeat Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at the Presidential election because he was massively voted into power by Nigerians at the poll.
Uzodinma spoke in Owerri, through his Director of Media and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, on the affirmation of Buhari’s victory at the tribunal, adding that it was a further confirmation of Buhari’s acceptability.

However, after the presidential election the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, went to the court to challenge the declaration of Buhari, as the winner of the election.

But, Uzodinma said that the tribunal’s judgment would strengthen democracy in the country.

VAT Increment: Proposal Will Be Thrown Out - Reps Member, Akin Alabi

Akin Alabi

The proposed Value Added Tax (VAT) increment is already hitting a snag, as a member of the House of Representatives, Akin Alabi has vowed to ensure that the proposal is rejected by the National Assembly.

Alabi who is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) tweeted on Thursday that whenever the executive brings the bill to the National Assembly, he will be against it.

The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved an increase in the Value Added Tax (VAT) payable in Nigeria from the 5% to 7.5%.

Alabi tweeted, “I stand against the PROPOSED increase of VAT. For your information, it has not been increased yet. It is a proposal by the executive which will have to be debated on the floor of the National Assembly. I will argue against it and I’m sure it will be thrown out.”

While announcing the new increment, Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed explained that, “this is important because the federal government only retains 15 per cent of the VAT, 85 per cent is actually for the states and local government and the states need additional revenue to be able to meet the obligations of the minimum wage.”

The House is due to resume from its 6 weeks annual recess on the 17th of this month.

It is unclear what the impact of a rejection of the bill will have on the 2020 appropriation bill.

Amuneke Reports Tanzania To FIFA Over Unpaid Salary

Former Super Eagles assistant coach Emmanuel Amuneke has dragged the Tanzania Football Federation to FIFA over their failure to pay his outstanding salary, The PUNCH reports.
Amuneke is currently being owed four months’ salary by the TFF, after he mutually agreed to terminate the remainder of his contract with the East African nation.

“The matter has been reported to FIFA,” Amuneke told The PUNCH.

“I tried to avoid this but it seems they are bent on depriving me of what is rightly due me.

“FIFA will decide if it is proper for one to be owed salaries after work.”

Amuneke guided Tanzania to their first AFCON tournament after 39 years, but failed to win a game at the group stage, prompting his exit.

What Mourinho said about Cristiano Ronaldo

Former Real Madrid and Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has predicted Cristiano Ronaldo will still be scoring goals at 50 years, after his latest record-breaking exploits.

Ronaldo struck four times in Portugal’s 5-1 win over Lithuania on Tuesday night, to break Robbie Keane’s record for most goals in European Championship qualifiers.

The Juventus star who played under Mourinho at Real Madrid has now struck 94 times for his country and is showing no signs of slowing up.

“What Cristiano does not surprise me.

“At 34, he is a top player, who plays in a top team and has top ambitions.

“It does not surprise me because he is a case study in genetic terms, and mentality as well.

“He is a phenomenon, someone who only thinks about winning and doing it more and more and better. That is why I am not surprised at all what he does.

“When he is 50 years old he will be at home and FIFA will invite him to a game of legends. He will play the game and score a goal. I am sure it will be like that,” Mourinho told Portuguese TV channel 11.

Buhari’s focus on security, anti-corruption laudable, Diaspora think tank says
Arise Nigeria, a leading socio-political organisation consisting of Nigerians abroad in various spheres of life released a report revealing its assessment of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari between 2015-2019.
President Buhari participates in Swearing-In Ceremony at the Eagle Square
The group in a publication to mark President Buhari’s 100 days in office, gave a detailed and expository analysis of the achievements of President Buhari since he assumed office in May 2019.

The report said the foundation for a true change Nigerians have yearned for has been laid under the leadership of President Buhari.

In the report jointly signed by Dr Philip Edeawor, Chairman and Mr Charles Eze COO called on all Nigerians to rally round the President as he strives to take Nigeria to a greater height.

The report reads in part; “It is indeed a statement of fact that Nigeria was confronted with a myriad of challenges before the advent of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, which was occasioned by years of maladministration by successive governments.

“Paramount of these challenges were in the areas of the economy and insecurity, as well as the monster of corruption that threatened the very foundation of the Nigerian society.

“The security of lives and properties in Nigeria was also at its lowest ebb with the threat posed by the Boko Haram Insurgency in North-East Nigeria, as well as the nefarious activities of other militant groups that wreaked havoc on Nigerians and without any help in sight.

“There was also a high prevalence of lack of patriotism amongst Nigerians, so much so that Nigeria was on the verge of collapse.”

“Arise Nigeria after the extensive analysis of the state of affairs in Nigeria in the period under review comes to the conclusion that the periods of 2015 to 2019 in Nigeria experienced tremendous growth and development

“Occasioned by the provision of sound leadership and a commitment to the introduction of noteworthy policy initiatives that have translated to improvement in all sectors of the Nigerian society.”

•Negotiators get deadline to conclude consequential adjustments

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) yesterday approved an increase in the nation’s Value Added Tax (VAT) from five per cent to 7.2 per cent effective next year.

This comes as President Muhammadu Buhari directed all parties negotiating the consequential adjustments of salaries of workers arising from the new N30,000 national minimum wage to conclude work before December 31, 2019.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, made the disclosure when he received a team of media workers in Abuja.

He warned that anything to the contrary would put pressure on state governments resulting in their inability to offset the arrears that had begun counting since April 18 this year when the bill was assented to by the President.

The minister hinted that government would raise a presidential committee on the workload of civil servants with a view to adjusting their allowances to commensurate with their tasks.

Admitting that the focus of his ministry was to create jobs, Ngige, nonetheless, added that it must equally put policies in place to protect existing ones.

He noted that unemployment was reflecting in the various social vices, including banditry, kidnapping cultism and agitations across the federation.

But the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, who disclosed the VAT increase after the FEC meeting presided over by the President yesterday in Abuja, said the decision was to enable government properly fund the new national minimum wage.

Council also sanctioned a N10.07 trillion estimate for the 2020 fiscal year.

Ahmed told State House correspondents that the gathering gave approval for her ministry to begin consultation with relevant stakeholders, including members of the National Assembly, for implementation of the revised VAT regime.

According to her, states and local councils stand a better chance to benefit from the development, as according to her, they would be able to effectively handle the challenges of salary payment and critical infrastructure funding.

FEC also sanctioned N182.68 billion for road projects across the federation.

The Minister of State for Works and Housing, Abubakar Aliyu, explained that the projects cover Lagos, Niger, Kano, Katsina, Edo, Kwara, Taraba, Jigawa, Imo, Abia, Yobe, Anambra states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The highways are the extension of Lagos-Badagry expressway project to Benin-Nigeria border at N15.2 billion; two bridges at Kontagora in Niger State for N1.1 billion; and Kano-Katsina road at N9.4 billion

Also given the green light were Kontagora-Bangi road in Niger State at N20.3 billion; Marina-Bonny Camp road, Lagos State at N9.2 billion; Edo and Kwara highways at N4.5 billion and N18.4 billion, among others.

In his remarks, the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi said: “Council approved the revised total cost for the rehabilitation of Itakpe/Ajaokuta rail line. The contract was awarded $122 million but we requested for a total of $56 million additional works which were broken down into $38.8 million additional works and 17.2 million variation now bringing the contract of Itakpe to Warri to a total of $178.7 million.”

He added: “Then we also requested for Lagos to Ibadan with extension to Lagos port complex in Apapa. We asked for additional works for $374 million with another variation of $282 million which totalled $656.8 million added to the $1.5 billion that the contract was initially awarded.”
